Im debating which car to pick between these two.

BMW 640GT or BMW X3 M40i

We are expecting a twin. The 640gt offers more legroom in the rear and more trunk space, but i guess the x3m40 would ride nicer?

  • The 640gt!! I considered this car for quite some time, ended up going with the 640 gc instead. But! It was an incredible car to drive, extremely comfortable, and the size & space is so nice. Great option if you need more space for travels or family but still enjoy the premiums of a luxury sports car.

I also like the x3, specific generations only though. Definitely still a great comfortable pick.

  • Me personally the 640GT

  • Have owned both and the 640 is much nicer and better equipped despite being older. Not quite as loud and sporty to drive but still plenty fast and a much more refined ride. Much nicer interior materials and the active aero is super fun to see deploying when you punch the gas.

  • If it were my choice between the two I‘d go for the 640GT. It’s just a more upscale and luxurious car and I‘m not a big fan of SUVs. However in your Position I‘d also look at the 540i/d G31 so the Touring Version of the5 series. My Dad had that car as LCI (albeit only the 520d) and that thing was lovely. Miss that car.

Yes! G31 540i would be my suggestion too. If not, you can’t go wrong with either the X or the GT. Personally if I had to choose between the two I’d go with the X3. They are solid all rounders.

640GT all day long. GT’s were a bit odd but still nicer than the X3. I have an old 6 series F06 that I love. I’ve driven the X3 and it’s just a down-spec’d X5 with a lot less power.

Yeah and if I remember correctly the 6GT was a Mix of 5 and 7 series so you‘ve got some of the flagship Features.

  • Well, you're choosing between a 7er hatch and a 3er SUV. My choice would be obvious, lol.

Also, I like the way GTs look. Never gave to craps what anyone else thinks.

100%. I was one of the weirdos who liked the Honda Crosstour and original Acura ZDX when they were a thing, which the 640i GT reminds me of.

  • X3 might be easier to live with I feel like

  • 640i GT is built on a much more upscale platform(7 series). Interior touch points will be nicer, NVH will be better, and it has much more rear legroom. It will also ride better due to the air suspension, which the X3 does not offer. The X3 has a higher ride height and will be more accessible for removing kids out of the backseat/moving crap in and out of the car. Cargo room wise, the 640i actually has more space.

A big caveat is that the 640i is discountinued, so parts might be harder to find and maintenance costs will likely be higher. The X3 will also have slightly more updated tech too. You should be fine with the engine, since it uses the B58, which is pretty ubitiquous throughout the line-up.

  • Without question the 640 GT.

    better looking by far imo

  • The 640 has a way better ride.

  • I cross shopped the 340GT and 640GT, I preferred the visibility and narrowness of the 340GT, and I think it has about the same legroom. I love that car, it's quicker then my boxster S and with the huge trunk I seldom use my ridgeline. It's my preference to use it to carry my 14' paddle boards and 21' kayaks, the yakima roof rack is amazing for this model, it's solid and removes in 2 minutes without tools, I keep the crossbars in my trunk. I can't say for sure about the X3 M40i, the M-tuned b58 sounds tempting. I am not sure how the legroom is in the back seats though. SUV Legroom and Sedan legroom is not the same (up-right seats require less legroom) so the stats aren't reflective of usability. I would have to try it in person but I am curious if you could comfortably put a rear-facing car seat in a X3. I dont have to compromise front seat passengers legroom with a rear facing seat in the 340GT (it's 7 inches longer than the standard 340 with 4 inches extra in leg room).

  • i despise the look of the GT models, definitely x3

  • X3 M40i and no one can change my mind over the fact that all BMW GT 5 series and 6 series and 3 series and however many series GT models there are, that they are hideous

They are kinda hideous but the inside is top notch and they drive very well. Plus you have a lot of usable space.

Just no dude 😭😭😭 coupe SUVs manageable but not bmw GTs 😭😭😭

You see X3s every day, the 640 GT is kinda unique and its based on a 5 series so it has a much more luxirous interior than the X3. Also rides better, is quieter inside etc.

Okay true but it’s not a normal X3 now is it? It’s an M40i. I’ve been in the X3 and it drives really well. I can only imagine the difference in power in a positive way for the M40i.

    Laughable take. Truly embarrassing.

  • Both are nice family cars, I would personally go with the X3 as a family vehicle (how can you be expecting a single twin?…)

  • The 640 is def going to be the nicer ride, only pro to the x3 would be that it looks nicer imo

  • Since we own a 740d (same platform as the 6 series) and an X4 M40d (same platform as X3), I would recommend the 6 series. The ride, along with the interior qualities are miles apart in the two cars (though I assume the interior in the 6 series would not be as good as in the 7 series). Also, our friends own a 6 series and are very puzzled right now, since theirs is getting quite old (they have nearly 300,000 kilometres) and they can’t find anything that has a better mix of ride quality and functionality, since if you want functionality you have to either get a 5-series touring or an X-series vehicle, both of which don’t have the same ride quality.

  • The 640GT is essentially a 7-series hatch. It’s going to ride much better than the X3, but has a lower seating position. If you and your spouse are on the taller side, the X3 may be easier getting kids in and out of car seats.

  • My inner driver wants you to pick option A.

My realistic parent wants you to know that option B is a much better alternative. Option A has more features and is spec'd very well, but I assure you you'll regret it when:

    • you're constantly bending down to add them to the car seat
    • you're constantly bending down to clean their spills and messes
    • you're constantly having a worse ride from larger rims and smaller sidewalls
    • you're going to have to be replacing tires because of said sidewall and potential potholes.

As a parent, X3 is a better car. I was deciding between a 540 and an x3 m40 like you as well. We found that even though the 540 was better equipped, the m40 is already a trim up and has most of the nice functionality, while also being a more practical parent car.

    Good luck!

  • X3, it looks better and not as weird and clunky as the 640gt

  • An X3 M40 will not ride nicer but with a higher entry/exit, access in and out of baby seats will save your back and knees a good amount of wear.

  • The x3 m40i is a master of its class.

  • Isringhausen is an incredible dealer! Where I got mine. Love them.

  • X3 looks way better tbh

  • X3 M40i all day man. Drive them both you'll see why

  • x3 m40i all day - the way that GT looks would need some getting used to

  • X3. Better looking

  • My vote would be the x3. Using a f chassis car interior in what is approaching 2026 it’s starting to feel outdated

  • X3 M40i is the only way to go.

  • X3. I find the form factor of the 640gt is everything wrong with modern car shapes. To me a car is either an suv, a limousine or a wagon. No weird inbetween stuffs.

  • Neither. Had 3 BMW’s and all three punished me with non stop repairs and “known issues”….love to drive them but will not throw my money into another bottomless pit. Why must BMW punish their customers? Over the blue and white propeller.

  • X3. The other one looks very weird.

  • I've got a 2019 535e 75k miles and have had no issues plus the 35-40mpg has been quite nice plenty of room for the wife and kids and decent trunk room. (We also have a full size truck if we ever need more room tho)

  • Not even close

  • The 640GT is an extremely ugly vehicle. The X3 gets my vote

  • Anything that isn't a suv

  • The car shaped one I hate suvs with a passion

  • Always choose a SUV for family rides

  • no suv for me

  • X3, the heck lol

  • X3 M40i. Newer and better future support. I had one and it absolutely ripped!

  • X3 M40i all day!

  • the 6 series is out of production, the x3m has a higher cost of ownership. both small. with twins you will probably need x5 space or better. Just some dad advice. thank me later.

    Not the x3m.

B58 will be a lower cost of owenership.

Not an x3m, and the gt has a 610 liters loading capacity (1800 seats down), whilst the x3 only has 510 liters and 1700 with the seats down.

I have both, and I have 2 children. Our GT is much more practical, comfortable and spacious when compared to our x3.

    Remember, you're essentially comparing a 7er & a 3er here, lol.

yes...until you have to take a large package home. both small imo.

I fit lots of large items at times.got a rowing machine..four winter tires and rims..mini freezer..not all at once obviously but they also werent just those items..idk man the gt is bigger than you think

  • The 6 series remains as a sedan or a large GC so space is limited, The X3 will not disappoint on performance or practicability wise.

Brother, how can you be so wrong

How can you be so wrong? GT is truly hideous.

Is the GT a sedan? It definitely does not have less room than the X3. It has more room than a 5 series. 610l of boot space. It’s 10 levels above in terms of quality on the inside and the ride is premium with the air suspension. Super isolated cabine.

The “rides nicer” depends on what you want. As for the looks, I like it. It looks miles better than a 3 or 5 GT. x3 looks nice as well but it’s not better in any way. It’s a different segment.

If you buy a car just based on looks, then good for you. For me, a car like this is primarily a tool to ride comfortably, feel premium and be practical.

The 6 series remains as a sedan or a large GC so space is limited, The X3 will not disappoint on performance or practicability wise. It does look better than a 3 or 5 series GT, we can agree

You have never sat in 6GT. Don’t talk about what you don’t know.

What lamp did you come out of genie?

Don’t be salty and sour. Next time, learn and don’t talk about what you don’t know. Grow up.

It’s fugly and I laugh every time I see one tbh. It’s ridiculous looking.

That’s not the main point here, is it?

  • Only if it has 3 pedals
