You have probably driven over a hole and when falling into it you hit its exact edge. I had that happen to my F10 when it was raining and I didn’t see the potholes because of the water and fell into one.
Hey buddy, I’m a life long Maryland resident as well. Im talking about on average. You also said head towards PA lmao, not Maryland. Obviously as you get into the country side towards Hereford the roads will be nice, the traffic is considerably less than Baltimore, and they consistently take care of the roads. There’s a reason why I said especially towards Baltimore
You’re claiming Maryland roads are “absolute garbage, especially towards Baltimore” when Maryland has fantastic roads
I won’t deny the obvious degradation of 795 over the last few years and into the city, Wilkins is pretty rough
But even the worst Maryland roads are light years better than an average PA road
If we were discussing only roads in Maryland, sure, but the question was “Are Maryland roads that bad?” and the answer is just no
I’m not looking for some “I know better than you” back and forth, I am pointing out that Maryland roads are not “that bad”. Some roads are objectively worse than others, but it’s not some kind of endemic issue and from your comment, it seems like you think the same thing.
Maryland has plenty of shitty roads, especially towards Baltimore. That’s the whole point of my comment. Notice I didn’t say every Maryland road was shitty. Yes if you go to basically the middle of nowhere, roads are fine.
Please visit us in Jackson Mississippi. We have potholes deep enough to lose a man, but don’t think they are for swimming, most have raw sewage that has been eroding the soil from the pipes up. One guy stuck a Christmas tree in a pothole and damn if it didn't try to take root.
Duuuude I got a 13’ 550 and with in 2 weeks of getting it I went over some train tracks and it popped my tire. I’m the type of person that if I. Getting tires I need to get a pair for the front. So it ended up costing me over $600. Sucks but I don’t have that car anymore
I had it happen to me in a previous M4. I was heading to Philly, to visit the guy I was dating. I lived in Boston at the time. The Cross-Bronx Expressway is like driving through a minefield, with some potholes as deep as a 5 gallon bucket it seemed.
I swerved to not hit one pothole, and landed smack into the middle of a different one. Caused damage very much like what’s in the OP’s photo.
Potholes are a much larger car nemesis than people give them credit for!
I always wondered, do y'all just actively hit potholes over there?
I live in a country with way worse potholes than the vast majority of the US, (I can guarantee that), yet I almost never seem to know anyone who got anything worse than a flat tire from one.
Fair enough, but when I still drove cars (I can't anymore due to panic attacks), I took extra care to avoid them die to said low profile.
(Please don't tell me that you can't see them coming, because then you're just admitting that you're not paying attention to the road, do better, unless the road is completely flooded, but that's a different matter entirely.)
Truth is you can't dodge every pothole though. Sometimes they come up on you too late, sometimes you can't see them (night, rain, snow, etc), sometimes the road is just so bad that you can't dodge a pothole without going into another, sometimes it's just horribly positioned and the only way forward without going into another lane is to just take the hit.
It's easy to tell people to just stay attentive, but if you're scanning for potholes, you're not paying complete attention to anything else around you, and that's not really good driving behaviour either.
Idk, maybe it's a South African thing. Scanning the road is a second nature, and if you're scanning for potholes, you'd likely spot other things that are potential dangers. (Such as animals/kids crossing the road)
Didn't consider the weather since we only have rain and sunshine here. Typically if I had to hit a pothole, I did it at the lowest possible speed at the time.
Cold/hot seasonal change affects the road greatly, If you tried to dodge every pothole in England you'd quickly get reported for driving drunk/erratically. It's quite literally impossible to avoid them all and I'm sure the same in anywhere else that sees big seasonal change.
Literally any road in England will do this to your rims.
Even a freshly laid road will do this because here in England we don't believe in decent quality roads, we worship pot holes that could house a small nation and cracks that make the San Francisco fault line look like nothing more than a scratch.
I don’t know why ppl are so adamant about calling you a liar like they have something to gain or skin in the game. OP said they didn’t hit anything, take it at face value and keep brainstorming for a possible solution if you want to be helpful or just stfu. I’m all for a funny joke at the expense of the opposite gender, but if someone already made it in this post, why is there a need to pile on with the exact same fcking joke? lol so lame man.
That being said, based on the damage, I don’t see how it can be caused by hitting a curb. It looks like something hit the wheel perpendicularly on its face and the collision came down on it vertically. I believe this because of the vertical tear in the tire and the direction of the scratches in the gouge in the rim. My money is on someone backing into your wheel with some kind of sharp-edged, steel tow hitch. Did you park in any vulnerable situations? One that comes to mind is parallel parked on a busy street where people are doing Y-turns to go back the way they came. A truck with a tow hitch could have backed into your wheel during the reverse part of a Y-turn.
I hang my head out the window and watch the curb through drive throughs every time these days. Thankfully the car I learned the lesson from years ago was a beater.
Not sure how you wouldn't have noticed the massive hit required to do that kind of damage. I cracked a rim on a pothole and felt that hit in my soul then my wallet.
I ran over a rock years a go, it was about the size of a golf ball and it got fired out the side and away from my car as I ran it over. It took a chunk out of my rim and tyre which looked just like this.
I've hit a lag bolt that did similar damage, but it stayed in the tire, was at least 3/4in in diameter. This was probably something similar, first thought was rebar. You can come across some strange things on the roads, don't ever follow any construction vehicles, contractor vans etc, most of those guys don't care about anything
Depending on your local laws you might get this covered for free but here in MA they have loopholes and almost never pay out
Oh damn, that’s one hell of a gouge! I’m sorry this happened to you. Do you recall feeling it happen? Or did it come as a major surprise when you stepped out and discovered it?
Damn, I’m really trying to think of what could even cause such an impact impression. Don’t think we’ve got any Mach 1 shopping carts being thrown around yet. The sheer amount of hazards on these crappy roads has increased so much it feels lately like it’s almost inevitable something will damage your wheels at some point. Still a terribly unfair situation and I feel for you. Why can’t we have nice things 🥲
We had a drill bit extension drive squarely through the tire and bust the wheel on our X7. It was wild, thump thump thump and stopped and the wheel was ruined
WOW it does look similar. I literally don’t park near curbs, and I try to park in the middle of nowhere. But people still park near me, and this is my fear
I don’t think you hit a curb. To me it seems more like you either hit a random large rock/obstacle in the road just perfectly to have it chunk out your rim, or somebody swung something hard and sharp at your tire. Pothole or curb rash should leave marks around the area too, not one single impact. And the slash/cut/chunk in your tire just above it is even more strange for either.
Honestly that’s what I think too. It’s too perfectly shaped and sticking out to have either not been struck by a flying object, or I ran over a small hard object at the perfect angle/height
I just went through this with the E38 I just brought my Mom (while I work on her Subaru). I put brand new mud & snow tires on it because PNW and within 500 miles/4 days of installing the four new tires, a pot hole took out both driver tires.
I’m excessively grumpy about it because if it’s not a truck, you can’t get mud & snow tires in town. At least not with 19s on it 😞 It’s actually pretty annoying because it’s a “wait a week for tires” or “get shitty over priced All Seasons” because that’s all anywhere has in stock.
I've had my M4 about 2-3months as well. I have not been christened with a pot hole bump yet. My previous car did and the damage looked similar especially on the tire part. I hit a pothole changing lanes that hid itself well in the lane divide. A curb hit would have scraped along the outer rim edge extensively. Doesn't look like a curb hit to me.
This is why you buy the tire and wheel package. BMW might argue it's just cosmetic but that actually looks like it might affect the structural integrity of the entire wheel. This is also so bad I'm not sure a wheel shop would be able to fix it.

My wife crashed her E30, bounced off a wall, spun and then straight at me into my X5M. 5+/-yrs later was driving my X5M and crashed it. You must be single.
Ikr who would make such a horribly misogynistic joke on the internet WHAT A SHITLORD imma email my local MP i shouldn't even have to read anything like this online the police need to get involved!!!
It's 2025 women can drive now better than men and men belong in the kitchen! 😦
What about this impact say “curb” lol, it’s literally just that area of the wheel/tire. Unless a boulder was hanging off the curb (which I know for a fact that I did not hit a curb)
Agree with you. Nothing about this looks like a curb. It’s something vertical and narrow especially with the corresponding damage to the tire. Curb rash would have more of a lateral damage pattern.
It can happen when you turn in on the corner of a curb while parking or if you just catch one of the rock type curbs that only sticks out enough for you to catch the edge of it.
Things like this don't just happen w/o noticing and definitely wouldn't have NOT known...unless you said oops one time while driving and are just now seeing this after the fact. Nevertheless, if you are the ONLY driver, you've literally proven my point for me. Get onto Marketplace, find another wheel and move on before you embarrass yourself more.
Curbed wheel, driven by you...please tell me how I'm wrong w/ my generalization when all evidence confirms it. You can't, but at I've given you the tools to fix it...swallow your pride and move on.
“wHeN aLl EvIdEnCe CoNfIrMs It” ok Sherlock Holmes. This literally looks NOTHING like a curb impact. At all. Also, I’ve confirmed multiple times to some of y’all that I did not hit a curb. Nor have I run into any potholes. I would 1000% know if I did either of these things. Looks more like someone or something ran into/ backed into my wheel.
You have probably driven over a hole and when falling into it you hit its exact edge. I had that happen to my F10 when it was raining and I didn’t see the potholes because of the water and fell into one.
Damn Maryland roads
Are they bad?
Absolutely garbage, especially towards Baltimore
Come see Montreal.
Yeah, can confirm. I got a flat tire on my F87 M2 while visiting montreal a few months after I bought the car in 18
Yep lost a tire in Montreal out of nowhere.
Or Los Angeles
Pffft, come see Saskatchewan
.amateurs...come visit Winnipeg
Nope, did that a handful of times this year already. Not sure how people drive those roads every day
Few things rival how shitty the BW Parkway is.
Brock Bridge Rd, Ritchie Hwy, 193 (Greenbelt Rd and beyond in both directions), 197, 198, 15, 29 south past Burnt Mills
I could go on lmao
As a life long Maryland resident who’s lived on the shore, in Baltimore and the county, Anne Arundal, MoCo, Frederick and Carroll
You’ve either never gone anywhere or are just full of it lmao
Take a 90min drive, head towards pretty boy, enter into PA and find truly terrible roads.
I think you’re missing the point
You’re claiming Maryland roads are “absolute garbage, especially towards Baltimore” when Maryland has fantastic roads
I won’t deny the obvious degradation of 795 over the last few years and into the city, Wilkins is pretty rough

695 is a nightmare.
Concur. Baltimore is pot hole hell.
Yeah they’re not great honestly
horrendous. you drive into baltimore city with no back pain, you leave with a misaligned spine or vice versa.
Are you suggesting that leaving Baltimore can fix my back pain?
I’ll put it this way
Ever seen videos of Russian roads? That’s Maryland backroads (and sometimes even highways) between October and June.
Only way you can tell the difference between Maryland roads and Russian roads on Geoguessr is the language of the signage lol
No lol
lol, you think they are bad, then you leave MD and realize anywhere north has even worse roads. NYC cracked 3 out of 4 of the rims on my F36.
Maryland roads bottomed out my Chevy SS and warped its radiator lol
It can get much worse
I live in Baltimore and can confirm they are awful. I’ve lived in 4 states and never seen roads this bad
Please visit us in Jackson Mississippi. We have potholes deep enough to lose a man, but don’t think they are for swimming, most have raw sewage that has been eroding the soil from the pipes up. One guy stuck a Christmas tree in a pothole and damn if it didn't try to take root.
Can confirm Maryland roads are cheeks. I hit a pothole in my Golf R going to work one morning and cracked the rim
Had this on my tire too, it was a pothole
Stupid sexy potholes
Don't remind me
lol you know the pain. I popped my tire on I-83. Good thing I had no rim damage
Duuuude I got a 13’ 550 and with in 2 weeks of getting it I went over some train tracks and it popped my tire. I’m the type of person that if I. Getting tires I need to get a pair for the front. So it ended up costing me over $600. Sucks but I don’t have that car anymore

I live in a country with way worse potholes than the vast majority of the US, (I can guarantee that), yet I almost never seem to know anyone who got anything worse than a flat tire from one.
A lot of American spec cars also come with very low profile tires and big wheels, so that definitely factors into things too.

The first cut is the deepest
You ain’t lying
especially if it's... actually deep. so sorry that happened to you bro
Baby, I know
Sorry I was hungry
Cough it back up 😤
Forbidden chocolate!
These comments like Kevin hart humour makes me chuckle I absolutely love reddit this was super cool
Literally any road in England will do this to your rims.
Even a freshly laid road will do this because here in England we don't believe in decent quality roads, we worship pot holes that could house a small nation and cracks that make the San Francisco fault line look like nothing more than a scratch.
Sound like South Africa
Sports cars and winter roads… a nightmare as old as… well… 50 years or so I’d guess
A comet?
My wife.

THANK YOU
Trying to leave the drive through but not seeing the curb. Ask me how I know
I actually don’t take this thing through drive throughs lol
I hang my head out the window and watch the curb through drive throughs every time these days. Thankfully the car I learned the lesson from years ago was a beater.
Not sure how you wouldn't have noticed the massive hit required to do that kind of damage. I cracked a rim on a pothole and felt that hit in my soul then my wallet.
If you didn't feel that when driving, you need to pay a lot more attention.
To me it looks like you ran over something long, it could be many things, but it’s not the end of the world OP.
Pothole… it happens
That’s impressive
I ran over a rock years a go, it was about the size of a golf ball and it got fired out the side and away from my car as I ran it over. It took a chunk out of my rim and tyre which looked just like this.

Rolled over something harder than the wheel alloy would be my uneducated guess.
It got edged my boi
Did you not feel it? This looks like it would've felt and sounded horrible as it was happening
Nope, nothing. I’ve had several vehicles and never once effed up a rim
Good news…. This gives you a decent reason to buy better rims.
Grab some HRE rims and never look back.
Oh damn, that’s one hell of a gouge! I’m sorry this happened to you. Do you recall feeling it happen? Or did it come as a major surprise when you stepped out and discovered it?
Major surprise when I just walked out of the store and noticed. Zero recollection
Damn, I’m really trying to think of what could even cause such an impact impression. Don’t think we’ve got any Mach 1 shopping carts being thrown around yet. We had a drill bit extension drive squarely through the tire and bust the wheel on our X7. It was wild, thump thump thump and stopped and the wheel was ruined
I feel your pain and it was def a pot hole. Had these back to back within less than six months of owning my 8 series. Broke my heart and my bank
in this example, nothing = something very hard
Manhole cover
I bet someone side swiped your car. It happened to me a few weeks ago and looks very similar.

WOW it does look similar. I literally don’t park near curbs, and I try to park in the middle of nowhere. But people still park near me, and this is my fear
yep, there is your culprit.
That looks like something with a rather sharp edge, maybe a loose rock laying on the road even if it wasn’t a pothole…
Looks like you fuck smashed a pot hole.
Kim. My girlfriend, only she is capable of curbing an alloy to such an apocalyptic level.
My question is, since Im stupid af, how fucked is that tire now?
Piece of metal/angle iron type of thing possibly in a pothole.
It’s why I’m back on 17s.
There's a pothole somewhere hittin this one right now.
Maryland roads are pretty bad. But you should see Long Island. Ours suck ass real bad.
I don’t think you hit a curb. To me it seems more like you either hit a random large rock/obstacle in the road just perfectly to have it chunk out your rim, or somebody swung something hard and sharp at your tire. Honestly that’s what I think too. It’s too perfectly shaped and sticking out to have either not been struck by a flying object, or I ran over a small hard object at the perfect angle/height
Sheeesh this is why I insure tires AND wheels against road hazards
These comments are awful LMAO
I’m seriously at a loss like 😂
Im dealing with a wheel related issues at least 2 times a month. If I didn't have warranty on my tires, id go broke getting new ones all the time.
I don’t have the warranty unfortunately. Will have to wait until the new year to be sorted out
Your spouse could surely do that
Terminator arm, particularly of the T-800 variety. I see this all the time.
Between that and the rubber band tires…..
Park near any cobble stone curbs?
This is why you buy the tire and wheel package. BMW might argue it's just cosmetic but that actually looks like it might affect the structural integrity of the entire wheel. This is also so bad I'm not sure a wheel shop would be able to fix it.
I bought it slightly used and they said they couldn’t offer me the tire and wheel package. I tried
Your dealer sucks. If you buy a used BMW you can still get the tire and wheel package through a 3rd party.
Did you happen to get new tires recently? When I got new tires the machine they use to take the tire off the wheel gauged right into my rim and looked exactly like that. I had them completely resurface my rim for free after that 👀
Nope, bought this just 2 months ago
Do you think it could have been changed before you? Those tires look really new, they still have the nipples on them
Car only had 3k miles on it when I got it
Dang dude then idk that’s a crazy scar
I had the same damage caused by a rock when I was driving with that side at a unhardened piece of road
Might be a stone chip??
That should have gotten your attention. It looks like a road hazard strike, could be a pothole but that definitely would have gotten your attention. I'm thinking a material strike like a strap ratchet or a tie down rod. Common trash found on the roads.
What size wheels and what profile tires? The larger and lower profile, the more active you need to be with road hazards.
If a pothole caused it, you might be able to get the responsible aspect to pay for it. Otherwise, insurance. Not cheap. 😞
My wife
Yeah ok, you hit nothing.
Not knowingly of course. Something also could have come from another car’s tire on the road and caught my wheel.
Oh you'd know. My son is the king of destroying wheels. Even he's never hit a thing. EVER!! LOL
100% no idea how it happened, just noticed it today
Like I said, I've heard that many times before.
Ok well I’m not a child and this is my personal car so idk what to tell you 🤷🏻♀️
These losers are rage baiting you. Don’t give them your time.
[deleted]
I don’t drink, smoke, or do drugs.
I love that I'm getting negged by people who know that these large gouges in the wheel dont happen without at least knowing or hearing something.
UNLESS I wasn’t in the damn car and someone/something ran or backed into it. Crazy thought, sleuth
Stereotypical neckbeard top 1% commenter
You got shot at
Literally my first thought lol
[deleted]
No, this isn’t a troll post. And that’s not a scuff, that was from my hand rubbing on the tire and removing some of the dirt
You hit something
Your wife or GF taking a trip to the grocery store
Hi, it’s me the girlfriend. I drive fire engines, I know how to drive my M4 to the grocery store
😰😭🫡
what a horribly misogynistic thing to say :/
My wife crashed her E30, bounced off a wall, spun and then straight at me into my X5M. 5+/-yrs later was driving my X5M and crashed it. You must be single.
Ikr who would make such a horribly misogynistic joke on the internet WHAT A SHITLORD imma email my local MP i shouldn't even have to read anything like this online the police need to get involved!!!
It's 2025 women can drive now better than men and men belong in the kitchen! 😦
Your wife/significant other?
I’m the only driver
You hit a curb
That curb you hit.
A woman?
Chauvinistic much?
Delusional much? It's called a generalization, because it's generally true.
Generally true = my chauvinistic opinion
Things like this don't just happen w/o noticing and definitely wouldn't have NOT known...unless you said oops one time while driving and are just now seeing this after the fact. Nevertheless, if you are the ONLY driver, you've literally proven my point for me. Get onto Marketplace, find another wheel and move on before you embarrass yourself more.
Mmmkay James lol, whatever you say.
Thanks.
Whatever you need to tell yourself. Just go fix it already.
Do you ever let your wife drive your car?
Holy shit what is with the men in these comments? Y’all just coming out of the woodworks today or what
Just trying to rule out the most likely cause first...sheesh
The fucking curb
15 year old kid guiding you into the car wash.🧽
Hand wash only 🫡
International Women's Day?
Do you have a wife?
I’m the girlfriend so, no.
Holy airball. You got the answer.
Join the other chauvinistic comments, how original 🙄
Statistics are not sexist
Do you even have these statistics?
Yes. This is quite a good source - women tend to cause more accidents, but less severe accidents:
