There’s definitely a lot of people who practice BDSM who have traumatic childhoods. But, I think only a very small amount of people consciously get into BDSM because of their childhood. There’s probably some unconscious psychology behind it like, people who live through trauma tend to have a broken flight or fight response which leads to not be able to find pleasure or meaning in the ordinary.
I’m actually reading an interesting book called The body keeps the score where they go into the psychology of people who survive trauma. It’s really interesting and quite surprising what this doctor has observed over the decades and how trauma impacts us in ways no one would think it would.

Doesn’t really matter unless it’s causing someone to engage in harmful behavior. Some people come from abusive backgrounds some don’t.
