AM4 is still relevant, even for gaming. I'm still rocking my 2020 R7 5800X and I just recently upgraded my GPU to a 9060XT. No CPU bottleneck whatsoever ! I'll stay on AM4 as long as performance isn't an issue for the games I play. Now I just regret not buying a higher end motherboard, I'm stuck with a mid range B450 board...
what issues are you having? im also still on a cheap b450m with 5700x + 6800xt myself and i cant say im not happy with them. they still run any game i play at high settings today.
its also an asrock motherboard which is funny to me seeing all these am5 asrock fiasco while mine is still kicking crazy almost 24/7 lol
I don't have issues per say. I bought an Asus board and I'm stuck with a buggy BIOS. I have 3600MHz RAM but I can't get over 3000MHz. No big deal, it just annoys me a bit that I can't use the RAM at its full potential. Hopefully, I don't have an APU, that would have made it infuriating.
Also, I'm stuck in PCIe Gen 3 but that doesn't seem to affect the 9060XT too much.
Maybe I'll just end up buying a used X570 motherboard but mATX options are not many...
PCIE gen 3 is only an issue for the RX 9060 XT if you are using more than its VRAM capacity during gaming. That is why everyone recommends the 16GB variant. PCIE gen 5 does help performance when you exceed your VRAM use, but your gaming experience will still be miserable, so you should never use more VRAM than what you have.
It also helps that the card has all 16 lanes wired. I remember how miserable the RX 6400 was because it was only PCIe 4.0x4 and caused insane bottlenecks on older systems.
My previous card was a RX 6600 and it was PCIe 4.0x8 and that didn't cause any issue as well, but I guess it also doesn't use as much bandwidth as a RX 9060XT...
you probably won't/don't notice anything in actual performance usage but knowing that you're technically nerfed on paper sure might annoys you a bit lol..
Ironically, I first had a B350 MSI board at first but needed to upgrade it in order to use my 5800X... It was good enough. Allowed me to overclock my R5 2400G when I was too broke for a GPU... Good times... I think I still have it somewhere with the 2400G still on it. It's only worth pennies now.
Did you do a slow step up on ram speeds? I got mine to maybe 95 percent or 90 of advertised speed but on auto it would freak out too. Clicking up small amounts saved me, although like you say, the difference really isn’t even there. I might get more frames but 2300 to 3580 or what crazy level below 3600 doesn’t matter enough to notice between the two.
I've just enabled the XMP profile the sticks came with and it resulted in a boot loop until the motherboard reverted back the frequency to the default setting...
Yup, i have 5800x , 3080ti and 32 gig ram. Been rocking this for 4 years and im still gaming in 2k 144hz today. I would gladly buy a new am4 cpu to avoid changing mobo amd ram. Ssd is gen 4 so its fast... just a cpu would be awsome
I'm still rocking 5600x and it does fine, the only games that are an issue are Monster Hunter Wilds (horrifically optimized, runs around 60 real frames, but framegen puts it into the 100s) and Wuthering Waves (they cap your frame rate at 60 unless you have an 8 core CPU. I mod it to 120, but it's an odd choice by the devs to not let me even try to push my CPU).
Same, after 60 bios updates because of asus board, did a nice upgrade to the 5800xt and loving the performance. I'll probably be on am4 for a while longer.
I bet we get a low production number run at minimum just because the free PR and goodwill is too easy for AMD to pass up right now. At least if I’m Lisa Su that’s what I’m thinking.

There surely are batches of reject chips from the 7000 series that could be back ported with the 5000's IO die. If nothing fancy like that, the 7 and 12nm process nodes have come down in price and all upfront R&D is already done.
I built an AM4 machine back in the Zen1 days (1700X and a Vega56), and upgraded the CPU to a 5800X3D on the same X370 mobo (Gigabyte Gaming k7 lol) then later from the Vega 56 to a 5700XT. Gigabyte updated the BIOS as much as possible, so it even runs SAM on the 5700XT.
I’ve yet to really want to upgrade it again, though I admit I’m considering a used 6 or 7 series GPU since the prices are pretty low.
That's my dilemma right now. I want a better cpu than a r5 3600 to pair with my 9070xt, but am4 x3ds are the same price as an am5 mobo combo on microcenter right now. Im about to pull the trigger on a 5800xt
I made similar upgrades to you this week. 2070S to 9070XT and 3600x to 5700x. I don't think the 5800x/XT are worth it as they run significantly hotter for a minimal performance gain. Up to you though as you can undervolt and do some stuff to make it less power hungry.
If you want a plug and play pretty much, the 5600x/5700x are the better choices imo. It'll still bottleneck at 1080p and a bit at 1440p but it's not too bad (5800x/xt will aswell) . If you're 4k then you're golden.

It’s def a bottleneck at 1080p, I just got a 1440p monitor and idk if its placebo or not, but my gpu util has gone up a lot, and it feels like im getting more fps on average. But its still absolutely bottlenecked by my 3600. I think right now, a 5700x doesn’t sound too bad with ddr5 ram prices right now, honestly I don’t know if they will re-release am4 x3d but i have a feeling they might have to. Up to you. If you can find a 5700x at a good price, maybe $150 give or take. But if you buy it. I heard that if you cant find an x3d but still want a killer am4 cpu, the 5900x or 5950x could be good, again, if you can find them at a decent price.

Some newer motherboards would be nice, and for those that didnt get a 5700x3d it would be nice if they ramped up that production again. Because that CPU is pretty darn decent, i am not swapping until AM6 probably.

Yeah... I paid for 3600MHz, I'm going to run it at 3600MHz ! Even tho, it was a used kit I bought in 2024 (45€ for a 16Gb kit 🫠).
Asus aint what it used to be. I was all asus for nearly two decade, built rock solid system that never crashed, from way back in the socket 7 era.

I had to stab out the battery and start over but then a slow steady ramp up got me in the game.

Given how long AM4 has been "retired" you can now buy b550/x570s and other am4/ddr4 era components locally for dirt cheap.

It wouldn't surprise me if this is the plan PGA and LGA divide so they can start raising the prices of LGA platform while having a simpler PGA lineup
