I've already decided on:
- ES DE (Emulation front end)
- OpenMTP (To transfer files from my Mac to the AYN Thor)
- Optanium (To keep my 3rd party apps up to date)
- Retroarch (Emulator for older consoles)
- MelonDS (NDS emulator)
- Azahar (3DS emulator)
- DuckStation (PS1 emulator)
- NetherSX2 (PS2 emulator)
- Dolphin (Gamecube & Wii emulator)
- Cemu (Wii U emulator)
- Eden (Switch emulator)
- GameHub Lite (Steam games)
Any other emulators or apps you guys recommend?
You should get both for switch. Switch emulation is at a point where 1 emulator may be able to play a game that the other can't.
Mjolnir: to be able to have be able to have 2 different front-ends set as default on the separate screens.
Pixel guide: for guides if youre into that.
Nethersx2: for ps2 emulation
Solid explorer: just a nice file explorer.
+1 for Solid Explorer. I've been using it on all my Android devices for many years. It's my preferred file management app.
Solid Explorer also has a built-in FTP server, which I use all the time to manage files from any other device or computer. Very convenient!
Amended post to include NetherSX2. Thank you.
Dolphin for GameCube and Wii games
I'd recommend giving Cocoon a try, it's still in beta but it's dual screen first, unlike ES-DE.
I like being able to launch different apps on different screens, as if the 2 screens were different systems entirely. Does cocoon allow that?
Yes, if you launch a single screen game on the top screen, the app grid remains on the bottom, and you can launch something else there to fill that in. An "app pair" feature is in the works as well, which will allow you to set a pair of two different apps that launch on the top and bottom every time.
Oh nice, I will definitely check this out then!
Just installed this again and unfortunately this doesn't seem to be true. Launching an app from the bottom screen launches it on the top screen.
It also still has a strange issue where it plays sound effects even with all volume controls set to 0.
Has potential though, so will keep an eye on this.
Eden
Jarngreipr for a better app drawer for the bottom screen and Mjolnir for any single-screen launcher setup that you wish to start up with a second app for the other screen.
Pixel Guide :)
I had to Google what it was. I don’t tend to use guides myself, as I find it takes away from the joy of trying to figure something out myself. But I’m old school. Lol
it's nice if you also use retroachievements, often times you would miss out on many hidden and obscure stuff you would never stumble upon in a normal playthrough
ZArchiver, Solid Explorer is good with its two-pane layout, but if you try extracting something like a PSX texture pack with a large number of files, it can take hours, whereas ZArchiver finishes it in minutes.
Seconded. Amazing how much of my system work I do in just ZArchiver alone.
If you're open to game app suggestions I recommend Pokemon infinite fusion
are there any good recent android instructions on how to install?
Here's the video guide from the official subreddit. There's a written one in the description as well if you'd prefer. Could not figure out how to update it to the newest version for the life of me though lol
I actually use CX File Explorer to do file browsing and network transfers. Haven’t heard of your tool, but same premise to do FTP.
Pixel guide! For guides for your retro games.
I also recommend downloading RAR so you could extract ZIPs and stuff on the go.
I would also recommend Swift Backup to have schedule backups of your device, and that you could seamlessly move anything from your Thor to a different Android handheld. It does need Shizuku to work, though.
