It's a little hard to tell with the legs and palps folded in against the body but it appears to be Stanwellia grisea (Melbourne trapdoor). Venom is not medically significant.
Definitely female Stanwellia sp. Not necessarily S. grisea. One of the darkest I have seen on ID pages but you can still make out the almost characteristic reddish patellas. Eye pattern, spinnerets, Carapace shape, and Chelicerae also consistent with Stanwellia.
I was thinking it could have been a "victorian funnel web", but they like a warmer climate than Great Ocean Road... I will have to go with u/DMeisterDan trapdoor.
No. OP says that the picture was taken at a campground. Might be one of those well maintained campgrounds. Also some of the blades of grass seem tattered as if recently mowed before the picture was taken. Fake grass won't need mowing so there's no point of the grass being tattered like that,
Please remember to include a geographical location to your ID requests (as per rule 5). There are over 10,000 different species of Australian spiders and many of these are endemic to specific parts of our beautiful country!
Also note: while we can help provide an identification for a spider, we do not provide medical advice. We also do not allow medical advice to be provided by members of this subreddit. If there has been a bite, you should consult a medical professional in the first instance.
If you google images of Mouse Spiders, you will see they have very distinct body shapes. The body shape of this is different. Also eye arrangement is different.
Please avoid low-effort comments that do not contribute meaningfully to the discussion, such as repetitive jokes, obvious statements, or meme responses. When providing an identification, include the scientific (Latin) name where possible, and indicate if your identification is a guess or uncertain.
Trapdoor,Vic Funnel Web. I used to dig them up quite often when I was re- stumping and relocating houses for 7years. Very docile unless provoked and I’ve seen them “play dead” before too, they have some serious mandibles and will grab a bamboo skewer when prompted. Gently slide him onto something and release him out of harm’s way.
I kept one I found as a kid in an enclosure for 2 weeks. (Had no idea it was a Sydney funnel web, until I showed my mum lol)
It laid on its back curled up for the whole second week and when I tipped it out thinking it was obviously dead it instantly ran away.
They're insane at playing dead
Do not guess the identification of medically significant spider species. Providing incorrect or speculative information can cause unnecessary alarm or lead to unsafe decisions. If you are not certain, refrain from identifying the species or clearly state that you are unsure.
Don't talk nonsense! We dont get them here in Victoria! 😂😂
Well, that's what I always get told, anyway. 🤣🤣🤣
(Oh yeah, and they also "aren't in SA! Don't be stupid woman!" But the bug dude that I had inspect our house almost ran screaming from the wall garden at the front! Then came back with all his proper safety shit before he opened up the bottom bits of the house.
He said "..its the damndest thing..", lol.)

It's crazy that an app on a phone and a quick post to a forum gets instant results 😂
....I found one of these in my grandad's garden as a kid. Captured it, kept it for a bit, it died. I literally took it to the Melbourne Museum to find out what spider it is. They later sent me a letter identifying it as a Victorian Funnel Web spider, and said their bite would hurt but isn't deadly like the Sydney one.
Lot of funnel web, Sydney and Melbourne, experts here. Is it true if you have them in your garden, you just use chickens to get rid of them. Suposedly, they are immune to their bite and love eating them?
Most animals are fairly resistant to their bite. They fuck up humans and monkeys though because they produce a delta-hexatoxin neurotoxin which they evolved to defend against particular predators. We just got unlucky.

That is definitely a funnel web highly dangerous and aggressive spiders be careful amd keep your pets away oh and kids away. They like to burrow under ground in the yard but they also like to live in big old hollowed trees

There are only seven tarantula species in Australia
And two species of funnel web that look like tarantulas that are small with black skin
So they are pretty easy to identify
there’s a quite lot of mygalomorph species in australia that can look like this (especially taking variation within populations and camera/lighting differences into account)
It's a little hard to tell with the legs and palps folded in against the body but it appears to be Stanwellia grisea (Melbourne trapdoor). Venom is not medically significant.
It appeared injured when I first spotted it, it was laying on its back. I tapped it with my foot and it jumped up on its legs.
It may have had a night of shagging and was sleeping it off until your foot woke it.... 😂😂
.. can relate.
C’mon mate, we’re not here to f*ck spiders.
Maybe some people are if it needs to be pointed out
🤔 ill bet there are some lurkers here tho.. 😂
I know for tarantulas you can often find them on their back when they are molting. Same thing probably.
Yes, strange place to molt though… I guess when you gotta go…
Did it rear its front up, like the image below?

Yep, it's either S. grisea or S. inornata based on location and certainly a lot darker than most I have seen.
Definitely a trapdoor.

Either a trapdoor, or a miniaturised Garthim from The Dark Crystal
Unrelated but: why is the grass so perfect? Graminivores dream of grass like this.
Fake grass lmao
Awh, you are right; I've been duped by plastic!

We got upvotes for both trapdoor and funnel web with this one lol.
I'm not very well versed on spiders, could someone please tell me how you knew it was a trapdoor and not a mouse spider?
If you google images of Mouse Spiders, you will see they have very distinct body shapes. The body shape of this is different. Also eye arrangement is different.
I'm from Australia and I'm certain that's a funnel web

Top comment here may be helpful.
Never mind the spider. Wtf is with the fake grass?
Fake = Melborne that’s what.
It's a funnel web
That's a big old nope 😭😅
Mouse spider maybe ?
All I can say is that it looks like a funnel web, it could have hitched a ride on someone's car (very popular sadly) and its a nope from me

This is a funnel web, scary things
Looks like a spider wasp may of gotten it

When I went back to look for it, it was gone, lowkey scared it got in the car.
Typically, when you turn your back to it, it hops on. If you stand still for a brief moment, you might feel it crawl.

That’s not terrifying at all

Victorian funnel web
Funnel webs don’t have hairs on their carapace.
It's crazy that an app on a phone and a quick post to a forum gets instant results 😂

I've owned chickens... They will absolutely destroy anything smaller than them 😂 😂 😂

Apologies,I was more being a smartass. Agreed don't kill spiders.
Apology accepted. Just don’t do it again.
Victorian Funnelweb WAY less harmfull than Sydney Funnelweb thankfully, it would still hurt quite a bit.

Yeah but they rare for the coast
And there aren’t many tarantula’s at the coast so If it’s small and black with big fangs it’s prob a funnel web
