Hello! I have raised garden beds and am working on my Spring garden planner :) I would like to grow more greens, but am not sure how to water them. Right now my garden beds have drip irrigation with a drip hose. The drip hose has a hole every 6 inches which seems too far apart to me for lettuce. Is there anything I can use that gives more watering coverage? Or is six inches fine for lettuce? The way that my set-up works, I can only use things right now that plug into a drip irrigation system.
The only situation where I think 6” drip spacing would be an issue is for the first three weeks or so if you’re direct seeding. You really need full coverage at the top of soil in that situation. Once they’ve got some roots they’ll find the water. Bear in mind that the area of saturation spreads out below the point of the drip emitter like a cone. The amount of spread varies with soil specifics but with 6” spacing I imagine you’ve got basically continuous coverage at 4-6” below soil level.
There are little micro spray heads that you can plug into most drip systems. I use them when I’m direct seeding then plug them and switch to drip emitters once I’ve thinned the row.
