Hello, my family has an 8-10 yr old rescued cat that they got about 6 years ago. He had really bad dermatitis and the vet kept him on atopica up until a few months ago. When they weaned him off, the process seemed to go really smoothly. He was up to a heavy 13 lbs from the steroid and began dropping some weight and eating a bit less when he was weaned off. We thought this was all normal and good. Then he kept dropping weight. He got down to 8lbs and became severely jaundiced, and lethargic. The vet said he has elevated liver enzymes/ liver disease and needed to start on some denosyl and appetite stimulant and monitor.
We switched his food to Hill’s i/d, which he loves —- they apparently don’t sell the L/d in the US anymore or we would have gotten that one. He’s been eating and drinking better than ever. The denosyl was making him throw up so we switched to milk thistle but this also made him sick. Then the appetite stimulant made him sick after a few weeks too (he’s always had a very sensitive stomach and been a picky eater) So we stopped that and the doctor said that was ok since he is eating and drinking so well. His one month recheck (Dec 1st), the jaundice was not any better, but he was not having additional symptoms and gained about 3oz of weight. He told us we will check bloodwork again at the two month mark.
Then, we were out of town from the 13th of December until yesterday, the 20th.
He seems to have not done well with the pet sitter. He looks skinnier, and now his abdomen looks swollen, which is a new symptom. He’s still eating and drinking well and has normal bathroom movements.
We have a vet appt at 10am tomorrow, but could anyone give me some thoughts or insight ? I feel like he’s not getting enough treatment wise, but the doctor said we don’t need an ultrasound or feeding tube if he’s eating and drinking well on his own. My family has fluids to administer at home too, but we stopped those for the last week. They are giving them again today.
I’m looking for any help or advice. We are very worried. We know this is a very slow process to heal a liver, but it seems like no progress.
Thank you in advance.
