Hi vets
I’m looking for guidance on spay/neuter and vaccine timing for foster kittens currently undergoing treatment for suspected FIP.
I have 4 foster kittens, 4 months old, on GS-44 (started Nov 23). On intake they were flea-infested and wormy. Two initially had bloody diarrhea and lethargy. After flea treatment and deworming, those two worsened. Diagnostics showed low RBCs, high WBCs, and inflamed GI/abdominal organs, so GS-44 was started (with treatment for possible toxoplasmosis). Within days, the other two declined and also began treatment.
They have now been on GS for almost 1 month and completed another round of deworming.
Currently: •Bright, active, playful •Eating well •Gaining weight •Persistent soft stools only (no lethargy/inappetence)
They are beginning early puberty behaviors (rough play, neck biting). I understand FIP treatment with GS-44 is still evolving, and I’ve received mixed guidance, so I’m seeking broader veterinary input.
Questions: •When is it considered safe to spay/neuter kittens actively on GS-44?
•Is surgery typically delayed until treatment completion, or reasonable mid-treatment if stable?
•Does persistent soft stool alone increase anesthetic/surgical risk?
•When should core vaccines be given during or after GS treatment?
Rescue policy requires spay/neuter prior to adoption; adopters would continue treatment and costs are covered.
Thank you for any guidance.
