So basically I spend my time at home in bed, I work a lot and when I get home my bed is my comfiest warmest place, I will make my tea and get in bed and put the telly on, if I'm any girlfriends we do the same. We will have breakfast in bed, tea in bed.. sometimes if we eat in the lounge, I always thing, I'd rather be in bed
So at work a load of my colleagues were saying this was gross. I am a very cleaning obsessed person, I wash my sheets weekly and its very rare any food gets on my sheets. If it did, I'd wash them sooner.
So what do you think reddit, is it gross ?

It's your house and your stuff, so if it suits you, there is no harm at all, and you do it.
I personally consider it gross.
Yeah agreed. We can all be gross on our own if we really want to. Personally I’d never eat in bed but that’s me. I’d also never have a TV in the bedroom.
I pretty much live in one room...shared house....we do have a dining room, but I installed a Murphy bed with a table that drops down when the bed is stored.
Yeah I can appreciate in a shared house it’d be different. No judgement!
I entirely echo this statement but don’t know how to do the small letters otherwise I would have done the same. Also, it’s not good mental health hygiene to see your bedspace like that.
My thoughts exactly
What do you deem gross about it?
Big risk of crumbs in bed.
As long as there aren't spills and crumbs it's all good
You do you, but I find it impossible to eat in bed without getting at least some crumbs in bed so that's why I don't do it. I also find it awkward to eat when not sitting up straight, which is not that easy in bed.
i have a foldable table for laptop stuff and eating. i love it.
I used to live in a studio and my bed had to also serve as my sofa for relaxing on. I had a table and chairs but would prefer to just sit up and eat with a tray on my bed as it was comfier and I could see the telly. It did the job and saved many crumbs!
I hate myself because I eat biscuits or crisps in bed. Queue pissed off me shaking all my covers down afterwards and swearing to never do it again
Then I do it again
Put a towel down to crumb catch 😉
Good god, how tall are you? Or is your ceiling just incredibly low?
I'm 6'1 and can sit up straight in bed just fine.
I don't think it's gross at all. Isn't breakfast in bed like, a staple pampering treat? But I would use a tray or something, as the mess of crumbs and risk of stains would bug me!
It is a pampering treat meaning once in a while unless it is a daily pampering which is just lucky.
Most people don’t do breakfast in bed
I swear it used to be more of a thing 20 years ago and has tailed off somewhere in the intervening years.
Breakfast in bed generally means you eat and then get out of bed and move on (and clean the bed). Eating other meals means eating and lying in your own filth overnight. Eww.
Yeh it's a bit gross, but people are a bit gross about lots of things and they're still good people. Sometimes I piss in the kitchen sink, but I'm still a good person.
You are but as I've explained to you many times, this is why I'm unwilling to be your window cleaner.
Yeah it's the shitting in the bath that makes you a bad person.
the kitchen sink? That's fucking rank.
/r/Sinkpissers
Who gives a fuck what people you don’t care about think of you.
There are no rules.
No, there are and should be rules. For instance, do not shit on your own bed!
You can if you want to.
Realistically, there are no real rules anywhere in life, only consequences. Even laws are just premeditated consequences.
If you're happy with the consequences, you can do whatever you want. If it is within your capability to do it, there are 0 exceptions to this.
Did I eat my McDonald's in bed this morning, hungover, whilst lying in a caccoon of shame? Yes.
Would I eat a roast dinner in bed? No.
yeah, but that's because of the gravy...
I’ve legit done that and is it heaven on earth
Sounds like Saturday was a belter though
Would I eat a roast dinner in bed? Plate? No. Bowl? Yes.
Maybe this is where I've been going wrong. I just use the duvet as a plate and put the veg on my pillow. Make a little dent for the gravy, lovely.
It depends what (and who) you’re eating.
Found the cannibal
This reminds me I need to get a yule log still
If you can’t eat in bed without generating crumbs then you’re just a messy eater, sorry
Heating is expensive and bed is warm so I have no judgement
Its realistically the only place I eat. I dont have a living room and the kitchen is too cold and I dont want anyone to walk in and annoy me
Yeah personally I find it pretty gross.
Same. I never want eat on my bed. I’ve always been a bit iffy about it. Once I’ve made my bed (which I do every morning after airing it out), I don’t go on it unless it’s for sex or sleep.
But this is just me and I’ll never judge anyone for it.
I've done things in bed that are far more gross than eating, that's for sure.
Edit: come to think of it, I've also done most of those same disgusting things on the sofa in our living room. And we only got that sofa about 3 months ago.
That's what I don't understand.
Of course I don't eat in bed, I have to sleep in there!
Which single-use-room are these people fucking in?
I'll hazard a guess that the type of people that spend their Sundays on reddit getting upset at the thought that there's monstrous people in the world who do disgusting things like eating a sandwich in bed aren't doing much fucking.
No. Breakfast in bed is God tier.
Not to me, but I am not a reliable litmus for this.
Back when I worked a very physical job, one of my favourite things to do when I got home at the end of a long day was eat a plate of chicken nuggets...In a hot bath.
I've since grown and matured, and live a very different life now, but every now and then the urge appears from nowhere to just say no to maintaining the appearance of being a functonal adult, and go eat bath chicken, whilst watching archer or the office on a tablet that's propped up on the toilet seat.
No regrets. Will probably do again.
My husband has brought me bath toast previously so no judgement here!
Bath toast sounds fantastic tbh.
No shame in that at all mate.
It’s the little things we live for, really, no matter how obscure they may be to society. Who cares.
Who cares if it is? As long as it's clean, it's no one's business
And even if it isn’t, it’s no one’s business.
Why do people come on here for validation when they probably have no intention of it changing what they do, anyway.
Fwiw I don’t eat IN my bed, unless I have the flu or something, but I often eat on it, on top of the blanket.
I often eat in bed with a tray 🤷♀️
A tray feels luxurious
A plastic £1 one from B&M but yes 😂
No, don’t be daft.
You do you.
I don't usually eat in bed, but sometimes I bring my partner tea and toast in bed at the weekend. I don't think it's gross and I dunno why anyone would think it is. As long as crumbs etc are brushed out and sheets washed regularly
Echoing what someone else said I also wouldn't give a fuck about what people think, whether I care about them or not. You do you!
No, it's not I do it a lot as long as you change the bedsheets regular pay no attention to what others think.
I guarantee they have disgusting habits & are just bumping their gums anyway.
I work 3hours cleaning an office per eve, these are professionals (allegedly) the women pick their nose & wipe it on the cubicle walls!!!!. And I bet they would say yes, eating in bed is disgusting..& that's only the half of it.
I just can’t cope with any crumbs in bed. If I feel the slightest crumb the whole bed needs to be changed
See I just avoid foods like toast that would make loads of crumbs !
Crisps are the absolute worse. My husband used to eat crisps in bed when I first met him. It would absolutely drive me up the wall!
Yes, it’s gross. I hate crumbs. The thought of a dirty plate being in a bedroom makes me feel sick
Dramatic
yikes never that deep
You can consider eating from your roof as well. It's yours
*Takes notes
My and my partner will eat in bed. Whatever your comfiest and happiest doing
Live your life, do what you want to do. Don't care what others think. Life gets a lot easier.
I’m doing it right now!!!!! It’s the best. Comfy and convenient 😋
I have no issue with it, although I wouldn't do it that often. My wife and I have picnics in bed or brekkie in bed but only once every couple of months.
I have no idea why people think it is gross and if you enjoy it then I'd carry on regardless.
I dont really understand why it would be gross? You're not eating off the sheets, and then sleeping in grease.
I usually eat dinner on my couch, i've slept on my couch when my partner has been unwell.
Im exactly the same. I’m eating in bed right now. I come home from work, shower, change into my pjs and have my tea in bed.
Who gives a shit, your house, your life. Do what makes you happy.
Just an aside as I've answered OP's questions elsewhere - I wonder what the venn diagram is between redditors who eat in bed and also say they don't change their bedsheets for months.
Yes I eat my dinner every night in bed. I don't make a mess. It's relaxing and I don't want to sit in the living room. Personally I just hate sitting up at a table, it's not comfy and I work behind a desk so I'm sitting at one all day. I don't think it's gross eating in bed and I also don't give a crap if anyone I know judges me for it. It's my life, my room, my choice. You don't like it then don't look. 👍🏻
Unless you’re an animal who spills food all over the bed and then goes to sleep covered in, like, curry sauce or pasta then no, there’s nothing gross about it. You do you
I don’t get it personally. Do you eat lying down?! If not and you’re sat up, why not sit on the sofa with a blanket?
I eat on my sofa. People who only eat sat at the table probably think I’m gross.
It’s definitely a class thing as well.
I don't think you're gross, I just think eating on the sofa is much less comfortable than eating at a table.
Yeah man have some class dawg
I wouldn't personally but then I don't have a TV in my bedroom because I want to encourage good sleep habits. We used to when I was 17/18 and at my boyfriend's parents house but that was more about escaping the parents.
Yea it is gross.
Yes, but we do it all the time
I live in a tiny studio so my bed is also my sofa and my dining table.
I yearn to live somewhere where my bed doesn’t have to perform quite so many duties.
Who cares, mate? You're an adult (probably). It's your bed. You can do whatever you want in it 🤷🏻♂️
who gaf
who the fuck cares, do what you want
If you clean it then no. I wouldn't be so open with your work colleagues though, people can be judgemental and they they start making inferences to other parts of you
For example, they could wrongly start to think of you as lazy, and then it colours how they see your work. If not now it might do at some pivotal point in the future.
Appreciate that in a cost of living crisis it's a good way to cheat the heat too
Commenting to make you feel a little less gross. I’m the same I spend way to little time at home to be worth paying for the heating, my bed is comfy and warm - that’s where I shall eat
I'm bedridden 90% of my life due to a number of health conditions that are yet to get under control. If I didn't eat in bed, I wouldn't eat at all & it's already something I struggle with (not by choice).
Although for today I managed to get downstairs to chill with my family for the day, it's my birthday today. This is how sad my life is atm, my birthday was spent just trying to safely get me downstairs like a normal person for a few hours.
We don't like cake very much in this house, so we get to request what we want our birthday "cake" to be each year. This year I wanted to try Tim Horton's doughnuts, so a box of those were my birthday cake. I still haven't been able to eat a single one. They are just sat in their box since 9am, looking & smelling delicious, while I wait for my immune system to stop kicking my arse long enough for me to try a maple glazed doughnut! And I'll be in bed when I finally manage to eat it.
Personally wouldn’t do it, but I have done it in the past and I see nothing wrong with it if you’re careful and change your sheets / hoover often. Fuck what they think honestly, it’s weird of them to judge you for something so inconsequential. Reeks of insecurity.
I eat in bed most days, but I also have plates/bowls and a small cloth underneath for any crumbs.
I don't think it's gross at all.
The act? No. The failure to clean up after oneself and lie in a bed of filth, particularly if one doesn't sleep alone? Yes. However I do recognise, unlike others, that those are two different acts.
Eating is bed is magnificent! Having eaten in bed is gross.
Gross for me but, your house your rules. My house my rules.
I've had bed picnics with a few partners and they've all commented that it's quite romantic.
Just don't eat toast, irritates when in bed and a bugger to get out of chest hair.
I have a couple of trays and make sure to remove unfinished food quickly so it doesn't leave a smell. If I am eating something crumbly or that can dribble I'll lean over the tray or plate and eat it. Kitchen roll or wipes are extremely useful to have as well.
Since when washing sheets weekly is “cleaning obsessed”? I thought its just normal? 🙉😀
I’m with you there.
I exclusively eat in bed, since I live on my own and don't own a proper table and chairs to eat on (and even if I did, it would likely be covered in all sorts of half-finished DIY projects and stuff). Just change your bed linen regularly and that's it.
Some people were taught pretty random stuff while growing up, and they hold on to those silly things for no reason well into adulthood, without even realising why. Their loss, honestly.
Personally, I enjoy doing it every now and again. Breakfast in bed, or a cheeky McDonald’s. However, I’ll only do it if I’m changing my bedsheets that same day, I can’t stand the crumbs.
Your house your rules . Personally I like to eat from a plate/bowl at the table it’s more comfortable for me. I might have some snacks in front of tv in bed though
Far from the worst habit but it's really not good for you to spend so much time in bed. Unless you're somehow sleeping brilliantly lately then this is poor sleep hygiene as your brain won't shut down as easily when you want to sleep as it's not associating the bed with sleep alone.
Also I'd feel like I'm wasting the rest of the house if I'm eating in bed, watching TV in bed etc. Use your rooms!
It depends what the food is. If someone asked my opinion, my first thought wouldn’t be ‘gross’ more so inconvenient
No each to their own fk what others think if u want to eat in bed thats ur choice I do it all the time lol
Bed is my sleepy place. The kitchen and lounge is my stuffing my face place.
It's up to you.
No different to when you’re in hospital. Your home, your choice ! The only drawback is spending so much time in bed that you don’t get enough exercise.
Not gross. Bit weird though. But I'm guessing you're young and child-free. Would be mental to do with kids.
Its only gross if you're serving your meals directly on your bedsheets but even if you were thats your perogative.
I wouldn't do it but I don't understand why it would be gross. It's not like you're eating it whilst sat on the toilet
Only if it's something that doesn't make much mess, which isn't very much.
Not gross, but nothing worse than spilt food in bed when you've to sleep on top of it.
I don't understand why eating in bed would be gross?
My bed is extremely clean (sheets changed once every 2 weeks and I never ever wear outside clothes/shoes into my bedroom so im only ever in it in my pjs), my dishes are extremely clean, I dont make a mess, the bed gets brushed after I eat - so where is the issue?
I regularly open the windows to ventilate and dirty plates get taken out straight away.
It would only be gross if food is spilt and then sheets are not changed
My kids are forever chilling in my bed, munching away, does my head in. I do not like crumbs in my bed ya wee shites. I've only ever ate in my bed once, which consisted of a box of chocs and a bottle of wine doing uni work when the kids fell asleep early and the husband was away.
It is not gross.
Think it is gross and I would never eat in bed. But you do you.
It’s not gross. Unless you are eating like an animal which I can imagine you’re not.
People eat sitting on the sofa all the time. How often do people change the covers of their sofa. But then also nap on their sofa daily.
Finding it gross is such uptight loser behaviour.
I don't think it's gross at all. It seems perfectly normal to me. I love eating in bed, and I don't get crumbs and stains on the bedding so that doesn't concern me.
Getting up on a freezing cold day too make toast and coffee for two, then retreating back under the duvet to enjoy it with my husband is a weekend staple.
Who cares? It's your bed, do what you want.
I hate to tell you but there are grosser things that people do in bed, involving bodily fluids.
I practically live in my bedroom when I'm at home. Currently snuggled down with a coke zero and some malteasers. Had my breakfast in bed this morning. Who cares what other people think.
It depends what you're eating in bed..
Just had a cheeseboard!
Depends what you are eating? (0:
If you're washing your sheets weekly any grossness is hardly going to last very long. I personally like to keep the place where I eat and sleep separate, but that's more a way to make the bedroom a place of sanctuary and peace keeping it clear of mess.
It's not great to make a habit of it, for both practical and health reasons.
On a practical level, even if you're very careful you will inevitably spill things by eating in bed and they will sit there for a few days until you change your sheets. On a health level, it's best to reserve your bed for sleeping and relaxing screen-free activities such as reading. This makes it easier to maintain a healthy bedtime routine and get to sleep. It's also good to, you know, move around from time to time even at home.
By all means stretch out on the sofa with a blanket over you, but try not to spend too much time in bed unless you're sleeping or preparing to.
I don’t think it’s gross, I just know I’d end up spilling everywhere and my husband wouldn’t be too impressed 😂
No. It's art. Just ask Tracey Emin.
It’s not for me but when your in hospital a long time you get used to eating in bed! No food upstairs is a rule in our house, less chance of mice in an old farmhouse
I think yes. However it's your house, so who cares what I think.
I only eat in bed if I’m violently hungover
When I was younger and living with parents I would do it more to have my own space and not always have to be around people. Now not so much, but still occasionally have breakfast in bed and cuddle up in bed with snacks and watch TV.
That said, getting crumbs in bed makes me not able to sleep so would need to clean if I dropped anything
Piece of toast or a bowl of cereal in the morning with a cup of tea? No problem
Full roast dinner with gravy? Or a greasy kebab dripping with chilli sauce at 2am? Maybe not.
But your house, your rules, do what you like.
Eating in bed is banned in our house. The crumbs 😡 oh the crumbs!!
I think it’s gross. That’s not going to stop me though.
i do if it's something with no crumbs
Simply? Yes! What's wrong with a table or desk?
The takeaway from my waffling below is this: are you single and living alone? If yes then do what ever makes you comfortable. If no then: this is not a hill to die on. Trust me, bro 🤣.
So .... Long answer is this; Eh. Yes.... And also no.
I'm torn because It wasn't gross when I was single. I'd chow down on n!ibbles then brush off any crumbs before sleeping.. several days (uh or months) later I might even find a bit of food big enough to eat! (Finding a random peanut is an experience, especially if one hasn't eaten them for a month or so 🤪)
Buuuut... I'm married now and I have been almost fully domesticated, so yeah. Definitely and totally no eating in bed.
I'm still reticent to say that it's "gross", per se , but having random itchy crumbs of food stick to you while you try to sleep does feel a bit icky.
A random anecdotal aside:
I have also mentioned before in other subreddits that when I'm at home I eat crisps ("chips" to my American friends) from a bowl instead of nomming directly from the bag.
I swear I have been "Pavloved" because now I feel that I'm doing something wrong or "naughty" if when at home, instead of pouring crisps into a bowl, I'll just dive my hands into the bag and start nommingg 🙄
Anything more than tea and toast is fairly gross.
No. Think about it. Hospital patients eat in bed. As long as you’re not making a mess, it’s fine.
I don't eat most meals in bed but I do occasionally do so. It's only gross if you're a messy eater or don't clean up any crumbs you make. If I spill something I just change the sheets.
Nah. I live in a shared house and don’t like sitting at the table so it’s just me in bed with a bowl. Not sure if I will be able to break that habit when I move out though!
Only if you make zero mess
Probably but I do it every once in a while.
Not at all, I eat a load of my meals and snacks in bed, yes it gets crumbs, but they easily removed
It’s not really physically good for you and I did an nhs course which said it can be harder to sleep if you use your bed a lot for things that aren’t sex or sleeping
I won’t eat in bed. My kids eat in my bed and it’s crumb central.
Doesn’t bother me though. If that’s where you’re happiest / most comfortable then go for it
Your life, you do you. I rarely do but when I do it’s a treat and I love it as I get all cosy and watch a good film or tv programme
It's not gross, can just be a bit messy but given how much I love my bed you're a man after my own heart.
I used to do this all the time when I lived on my own in Malta. It was the warmest place in winter and coolest in summer. Ignore the others
Who cares as long as your hygiene is not suffering from it, and that doesn't seem to be the case. I think it's weird that your colleagues call it gross. I bet they do things too that others would call gross, so why judge someone else. Some people have their dogs sleep in bed with them.
I have a very strict no food upstairs rule. Sometimes my son spends the weekend at his dads, I indulge in a few child free beverages on the Friday and the Saturday I order Chinese and take a big tray full of food up to my bed. I might confess when he moves out.
Depends, a little snack here and there is fine, a whole bowl of stew of curry is not.
Unless of course you have no where else to eat.
Why the hell not?
Why can’t I have a buffet in bed?
You can, and I can think it’s rotten.
That’s what you think for whatever socially brainwashed reason.
Doesn’t make it wrong, just because you’ve e been told it is.
Indian people eat with their hands, are they DISGUSTING compared to you? Careful now?
I mean it’s your bed so your rules. Personally I dislike eating in bed as there will invariably be crumbs or spillage of some kind.
There's no over-arching 'real' judgement on stuff like this. Nobody can tell anybody else they're 'wrong'.
Does it really matter what your colleagues think of what you do in bed?
I wouldn't say it's gross. I do think it's weird to be in bed that often though
That’s how you get mice.
Your life live it how you like. You wanna eat in bed eat in bed...I don't eat chocolate through day but I wake up randomly in middle of the night really craving it, thus I often have chocolate at side of my bed I can turn to eat a few pieces the go back sleep (don't ask I've asked myself why more times enough)
Do whatever you want.
I feel as though a chocolate bar is acceptable but an actual meal is wrong
Snacks fine, full meals that's a bit weird yeah. Getting in Charlie Bucket's grandparents territory.
Why?
You do you but I'd never contemplate having any food in the bedroom
Tell them to watch Downton, the fact that eating breakfast in bed is a privilege for women once they get married is repeatedly shown and commented on.
Do whatever you want. It's your bed
Id never do it but I'm a messy eater. I wouldn't want crumbs and stuff all over me.
it's a red line for me. I won't tolerate it.
The thought of crumbs in the bed makes me shudder.
I do this all the time too, its a throw back from when I lived in a house share and hated my housemates. I would eat in my room and the only place to sit really was in bed. I still do this now all the time even though I now own a house with an actual dining room. My boyfriend thought it was weird at first but ive brought him around. What you do in the bedroom isnt anyone's business lol.
I do it, but that's mainly because I live in a house share and sometimes prefer to eat in private.
Is it gross? Possibly? I mean I've never gotten sick from it, and I take steps to stop food getting on my sheets.
If I shared the bed, I think it's a habit I would break, and maybe if I lived on my own I would be more comfortable sitting in the kitchen all the time.
If you change your sheets regularly, I don't really see the problem.
Yes. The bedroom should be a sanctuary of peace.
Yes but I do it anyway because I'm gross and happy
Your bed your rules. But yes gross.
Eating in bed is the sign of being an ultimate slob
mmm... not necessarily but I prefer not to
Not gross but really bad for yout stomach health
I often eat takeaways in bed straight out of the box 😋
The amount of people here being inadvertently ableist is gross.
Some people have no choice but to eat in bed.
Eating in bed isn't gross if you aren't a slob about it.
[removed]
I often eat in bed so no
I wouldn't even worry what other people do and think about you in your house.
As long as staying in bed doesn't make you feel bad or depressed then I personally think it is all okay.
I just can’t eat in bed - unless it’s a hotel and I’m eating tea and jam off a posh metal tray with a lid. I just can’t enjoy food in my bedroom! But you do you! I’m just overly anal
Yes except when I do it
Naah it’s fine, you wash your sheets every week. Do what makes you happy
Absolutely not gross. But if you live in bed, you need to change your bed linen more often and have a bin nearby for food waste. If you haven't set up the space to be lived and eaten in, it's gonna get gross, but it's not inherently gross.
