This winter for us up here has kinda been up and down but New Years brought a good chill 70F(19C)(highs) & 63F (16C) (lows).

But, it has me wondering, what's the coldest winter you've experienced locally and how cold can it get across the region? Is it even noticeable?

Here in The Bahamas, I think the coldest I've been in is 57F (13.8C) (High/low) and I think our record is 35F(1.6C) in 1977.

  • What’s winter? We have a rainy season and a dry season

Does either season make people depressed like winter does in the northern hemisphere?

Heat make people more prone to anger

Winter is probably our happiest time of year.

We get a break from the heat + Christmas + Junkanoo.

Although I do miss summer for its beach season.

What's the difference between going to the beach in summer vs "winter"? I imagined you'd be able to swim in all seasons in the tropics.

Generally we are more accustomed to warm temps most of the year and because our waters are so shallow, in the summer the sea can be 90s or high 80s.

In the winter it becomes 70s. It’s swimmable, but for Bahamians it isn’t that comfortable.

The North Americans love it tho.

Edit: Add 60s Daytime temperatures and wind it can make it worse. However, this is the north of the country not the south.

That sounds amazing to me lol. The Mediterranean is impossible to swim in outside of June-Mid September. Some people will go for a swim in wetsuits but that's about it.

If anything winter makes us happier lol, it’s a nice break from the heat

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm I want to say no but I’m reminded of that winter in the DR when everyone was playing Elizabeth to the point that I closed the windows in the afternoons. So maybe

We in La Vega Province have temperatures as low as -7°C, something you slum dwellers in the capital can only dream of 😌

Yuca yuca. Batata Pipiota. Casabe yuca.

Sorry. He’s talking about their habitat I’m asking for more information so that I can translate

Oh man, you got wasted by drgs again 😭

As someone who has lived in Constanza (And has plans to move there permanently in the future) i can't say i have noticed much of a difference between Constanza and Barahona's weather, might have something to do with me living close to the sea in Barahona, which makes nights all year round kinda cool, but i find Polo in Barahona to be colder (Specially during winter) than Constanza.

Might just be a me thing.

Constanza (pueblo) no es la única parte fría de la provincia

    How is that a flex

Inside jokes, things between him and me, you won't understand.

Wait you’re that guy from the Dominican Discord server

Us too, but I’m guessing temperature-wise for you guys it’s not noticeable.

Is there no change in the mountains?

Is there no change in the mountains?

Big change, up in the mountains it gets bellow zero several times in the winter. The coldest I've experienced was -3 camping in Valle Nuevo National Park

I’m from the lowlands so I’ll let someone from the mountainous areas talk about that. Where I’m from temperature goes down some degrees but the biggest change is the “breeze” and lower humidity

The change is definitely noticeable. It went as low as 19 C in the coast a few nights ago, compared to 26-28 C nights in the summer it’s quite the difference. It will go down to 11 C tonight in the mountains according to the weather app. Dominicans normally refer to this change as “El friíto de Diciembre”.

It gets colder around October - December, but would probably be considered warm still, to someone accustomed to winter. It also gets darker sooner (around 6 pm) compared to around 7 ish midyear.

We have rainy and dry seasons.

I was gonna say, Hurricane season and Not-Hurricane season

  • Buddy, it just have wet and dry season, lowest might have been 24C on a mountain, on a particular night

Does either season make people depressed like winter does in the northern hemisphere?

I wouldn’t say. Sad when the hurricane mash up the place is all

  • How cold is what??????? Sir/Madam no such thing exists here.

    Y’all ain’t gat no mountain?

We've got 3 mountain ranges and outside of cold snaps which only happens at night, the place is hot.

  • No such thing as winter in the Caribbean. 57 degrees at night the lowest .

    57 celsius? O___o

Depends on where you live. I’m from kenscoff it gets very cold up there

Officially, yes, but at least too me, winter is just when it gets cooler.

Alotta people say winter= snow, whereas I disagree.

  • Suriname doesn't have winter. We have four seasons, with each their own characteristics.

We currently (mid Nov.-January) we are in the small rainy season. It characterized by lower temperatures (because of cold air coming from the north east where it is winter), intermitted rains and sunny times throughout the day and slightly windy. To me this is good weather, because it’s not too hot, not too humid, just perfect.

The lowest temperature I ever experienced was 19°C in Paramaribo. However the lowest was 10°C somewhere in the jungle.

  • Lol it's hot af.

That’s us most the year, Thank heavens, we get a bit of reprieve.

Because, we ain’t got no mountain much less a hill.

I can attest. But Bim does cool down in December-January

  • There is no winter in my country.

  • Temperature, weather and directions are the forbidden questions to ask in the caribbean. They dont exist lol

  • Brazil is so big I can't reply for the whole country, but in my region (southeast, Minas Gerais) it can get really cold during the winter (about 5-10 degrees celsius), but it doesn't snow. Snow is very rare in Brazil and when it happens it makes the headlines for the newspapers.

Even in the summer (the current season) it can get quite cold (for our standards), right now is 19 degrees and if it drop like 3 degrees everyone will be saying "it's so cold right now" hahaha.

On the northeast and north the climate is totally different, they are closer to the equatorial line, so they basically have no winter, even thought this is a simplification.

PS: Jesus christ, I didn't notice I was replying to the ask carribeans subreddit, I thought I was on a latin american subreddit, sorry folks.

Lol, Good to have you tho.

  • last night it dropped to 6 degrees in La Vega

La Vega city or La Vega province?

  • Trinidadian here. There are only two seasons here: dry and wet.

    Like u/whattodo1995 said - it's hot af

  • We're actually in our dry season right now I think. Not much of a difference in temperature really, our average temps is in the 80s to low 90s with extremes on both sides of the spectrum--Like hiting the high 90s to 100F in the summer. I think the lowest I've seen St. Thomas (USVI) get has been the RARE 60-something or lower 70s, but again that's rare af. And then it goes back to normal the next day. Things usually stay in the 80s.

Generally, I think the most notable change is the humidity. It's so uncomfortably muggy any other time of year. At least you can breathe in this weather lol During the summer sometimes I consider walking around in my birthday suit and going skinny dipping because it gets so freaking hot

I live on the hills so we sometimes get little cold snaps that rivals the good winter days of Central and South Florida (imo) and I take that time to get cozy and hunker down under the comforters.

  • -20. Ontario. 80 cm of snow so far this year This is why you have tourism

  • The January - March temperatures can drop into the 50s Fahrenheit or 10-15⁰ Celsius in the mountains. March - May can be bone dry in Belize. So if you want dry and warm but not blazing hot, January - March is the best time. June through November is hot and humid.

Belize has a lot of plateaus 600 - 1000 meter high, the barrier reef blocks strong sea winds and we are pretty far from the Gulf Stream.

  • Winter not really a thing in DR unless you live in mountains

  • Usually it rarely gets bellow 20° in Santo Domingo, but this year has been relatively chilly, some mornings it gets down to 16

I wouldn’t say rarely, every winter it gets to 17-19°C, the average low temperature for January, February, and March in the capital is 20°C. So anything slightly below or above than that during these months isn’t rare.

This season has been more chill compared to the last few years for sure, but I remember some years ago this was the norm and it felt even cooler due to wind chill. A change I have noticed is that we used to get strong winds during our winter from the north which made it feel cooler, nowadays they’re not as strong and short lived, they used to start around October and would stay almost constant until March, with short breaks in between.

  • We don't have winter

  • Pacific Northwest, USA. It’s about 40L-55H deg F on avg right now. If we’re gonna see snow at sea level, it’ll be a day or 3 in the next couple months. Then back to the norm. Kinda boring, but no extremes in any direction.

  • We don't really have a "winter." The temperature doesn't appear to fluctuate much these days. The lowest the temperature normally goes is around 24°, though there were times back when I was young that the mornings felt colder. Like 17° cold.

  • Here in my city, in winter it sometimes gets down to 0°C or even lower.
