Will Venezuela be a new USA territory governed by them?

  • EDIT: Well this certainly aged like milk. Looks like they installed the VP as acting president but under US control. An odd choice given she is a Maduro loyalist.

ORIGINAL: According to the US press conference by President Trump, the US will assume control for a while then transfer control. Who knows how long that will be. They'll also rebuild the oil infrastructure. So what I see is the US military will control Venezuela in the short to medium term then who knows when they'll transfer power?

Nobody knows this but I can make a reasonable guess how this will work out. Machado will be installed as the new president. They’ll have a strong U.S. alliance and U.S. military presence but will be self governed. U.S. companies will get access to the oil in exchange.

The only threat is Russia but they can’t even handle Ukraine so I doubt they’ll be able to stand up to the U.S. unless they want to go fully nuclear.

Honestly, for the US to do this so easily and so quickly, the Venezuelan armed and security forces definitely had to allow it via some agreement. A few people betrayed Maduro for sure.

The only way that could happen is if someone with more military or security power than Maduro ordered them to stand down.

This means Vladimir Padrino López told them to as Minister of Defense.

Diosdado Cabello also controls the police force and intelligence networks and was considered the 2nd most powerful man in Venezuela.

Unless she plans to purge everyone who was under Maduro (which she would have a hard time doing), if Machado takes over, she will have to balance keeping those two guys and their troops/agents happy while simultaneously keeping America happy.

Her taking power directly would also be hypocritical, given that she is a proponent for democracy. Constitutionally, the next leader is the current vice president.

From what I gather some of them were bribed.

    Yes they were

The CIA allegedly bribed a close associate of Maduro, who revealed his hideout... Just like with Saddam Hussein in 2003.

Some likely took the $50M and $25M rewards that the US GOVERNMENT was offering.

The reward wasn’t paid out according to Trump

The Americans probably told Camillo etc they’d turn Venezuela into another Iraq if they didn’t turn. Not saying that’s justified but sounds like a gun to the head scenario.

Well with the oil companies coming in let's hope this doesn't turn into another Batista Cuba. Then you got a future rebellion that may be inevitable.

They can't handle Ukraiine so bad that they had to retreat from Russia into 4 Ukrainian oblasts and hide out there for 3 years.

  • Two options really, 1st option is a U.S backed puppet government, 2nd option…..chaos

    3rd option: both

Given Latin American history, it's both

Yep, it's likely both. The US administration has shown they do not care about Venezuelans, i.e. ending their refugee protection status last year. This is 100% just a neo-colonial move on their part

It is very wacky to see people thinking this is going to bring peace and prosperity to the country.

Either bad immediately, or bad in the long run. F***ing US meddling yet again.

I'm not saying you're wrong, nothing against what you said. Just, with the track record of US interventions, I'm not celebrating just yet.

USVI, Puerto Rico don't seem to share the same struggles found in South and Central America though

They could have it better... but no, not as bad. Many more freedoms too, considering safety is freedom.

  • USA Will control the oil, build a military base their and put their banana Governor at the head of the state. The banana Director will go to Israel on one famous wall, then will start a political of austerity while selling to big corpo most of Venezuela ressources. In 10 years people will riot again.

  • Probably install a president who deals with America and not China and Russia. Carribean could be next up.

  • Should this be treated as a hostle takeover, as in business?

NO, it should be illegal murder rape and pillage which is basically the same thing anyway.

  • I'm mostly concerned about the whole Essequibo annexation, will the new leader double down on it, will the US help Guyana out and push Venezuela to finally give up this claim or at least engage the ICC in settling the dispute. I'm a bit doubtful though cause who the US wants in power is also pro-annexation. It's been 400 years, take the L already. Depending on how Venezuela reacts it could have access to way more markets for its current oil reserves anyways.

tl;dr it can go badly but it can also go well

Nobody in Venezuela besides weirdo fringe nationalists want to do anything about the esequibo, it’s maybe a sentimental thing for Venezuela but for all intents and purposes, the people there are guayanese and feel guayanese, we can’t run our country, we need to let these people be and move on.

The USA is going to assume control. I don't think the US will annex Essequibo.

Something tells me the issue with just go away. The U.S. isn’t interested in territory disputes between South American countries for the most part.

They could take control of your oil too. I'd be more worried about that.

whose they? If you mean the US, it's already theirs. Exxon and Hess control the oil, Guyana gets a small portion of the revenue. It used to be smaller but Guyana renegotiated the agreement. There's still lots of infrastructure developments with what the country gets back.

The new grader will double down on it because she supports it. Mauro was hyping the Essequibo matter to drum up support but he never made moves. The US now allied with the Weird machado bitch, Watch that

Why do you find her a "weird b*tch"?

Dedicating your Nobel prize to trump of all people means you didn’t deserve it in the first place

I listened to that woman o NPR. She heaped praises on trump has been hanging out with the authoritarians and wannabe dictators of the world. Good luck to Venezuelans looking freedom.

Venezuelans are pretty much happy, you know?

Yes I’m sure there are happy Venezuelans, as they don’t know US track record. They will find out in due course.

You really think they are not "educated" enough to not know better, right?

    Jesus Christ...

Jesus Christ what? As if people who are suffering at a point in time celebrate the now not thinking of what else there could be or what was. They do not care about US track record in the region. Worthless talking to you.

If they’re celebrating US toppling of their leader they’re acting like it. And way to put words in my mouth.

As opposed the mass murderer and drug dealer who was running the country. Also it’s not as if she asked for the award. Great to know redditors are here to explain our situation to us.

They've been watching too much CNN

As always, be respectful and kind.

I hope it works for your sake

As always, be respectful and kind.

You should check the sentiment of the majority of Venezuelans right now. Social networks posts could offer you a cue if you have a decent grasp of Spanish.

According to you, they're sick too

  • Well Trump just confirmed it will be run by the US so you got that one right

The world has always been empire based and will continue to be like this until the end off time. The spread of empire can only be stopped with organised violence: Napoleon's failed invasion of Russia, Hitler's failed invasion of Russia, subsequent retreat and loss of Berlin, Rome's expansion halted by the Germanic tribes at the Teutoburg forest etc.. etc... or unless there's internal strife in said empire and it implodes. So fair play to the US, they're doing what empires do. The rest of the world can only cry into the US coffee mug unfortunately, while they drink the tears of the vanquished lol. Only China might rival them in the upcoming years.

Well innocent people have died so much for drinking the tears of the vanquished they are drinking their blood. They’re demonic

Without sacrifice there's no 'freedom' and anybody that thinks they can accomplish freedom without sacrifice, meaning loss of life, is deluded. That's why, as much as I like Mia Mottley as a leader, I find her speeches hilarious. It cost the Chinese over 20 million lives to repel the Japanese and the Soviets 28 million to repel Nazi Germany. Freedom ain't free, until we all understand this, they'll just keep drinking them delicious, salty tears lol.

Hard stuff. The Caribbean doesn’t have bodies to spare for spilling blood

  • Nothing changes. People are unwilling to suffer the pain points of real change so they'll cobble together an interim government, call elections which won't be free or fair and install its next leader.

  • I believe the islands and coastline is to be managed by Trump Hotels and Resorts

  • It seems like chavistas are still in power and listening to the vice president it seems she is hungry for power and will be another maduro

Seems foolish if she doesn’t play ball with the Americans. The U.S. flew in, kicked in his door, killed his entire security detail, and flew out with him.

  • Doesn't Venezuela have a vice president?

If so, the USA would have to remove the whole regime, I would of thought.

She just issued a statement from Venezuela, she's still in the country.

It does, funny enough she's in Moscow right now

Apparently the VP is in Russia right now

  • Nobody knows.

  • Trump Tower, Trump Casino, Trump University and many other beautiful buildings managed by Trumps or Kushner.

  • Somewhere between Iraq and Puerto Rico for the folks that live there is my guess.

  • America: “I am the Captain Now”

  • haha trump cruises to the islands. he might just do that.

  • That will be nice 👍 to become the next Hawaii / Puerto Rico

  • nothing will happen and the USA wont get the oil

  • They'll be like canada imo, they'll pay tribute with discounted oil and gas and have a puppet president in either maria machado or juan guaido.

Seems better than what was there before though.

israeli puppets are better? give your head a wobble
