Yesterday I felt absolutely horrible. I had headaches, nausea, dizziness, a cough, I was tired, and felt unable to work on the assignment at home. Said assignment is now locked. Is there anything I can do about this?
10th Grade student btw.
Edit: was able to turn it in and get a B as my grade. I just emailed him.
How long were you sick and how long ago was the assignment posted? My school doesn't give students extensions on long-term assignments unless a student has a lengthy illness. It's to avoid kids waiting until the last minute to do anything and then getting "sick" to get more time. If you only had one day to do the assignment and were sick that day, you should definitely get an extension or chance to make it up. But if you had two weeks, didn't do anything, and then got sick the day it was due, that's unfortunate but on you, imo.
A week or so ago, but it was a multi-step process that wasn’t completed until yesterday morning. People were supposed to have their presentation finished, and mine is actually practically finished (just need to put everything I wrote onto the slides, shouldn’t take more than an hour.)
Also, today is a teacher work day, so hopefully he’ll respond.
I’d send an email with what materials you do have and at least ask if they are willing to grade that, or would they consider letting you turn the slides in completed by 12pm? Pick a reasonable time because they are likely working on finalizing grades before break. Do explain your sickness but focus on what they would be okay with grading, if anything. As my wife (also a teacher) says, can’t say no if I don’t ask. It’s better to communicate and find out than not try and be in the same spot you are.
I second this and also offer to show your editing history of work already completed
I’d take the hour to finish it to show you’re invested in your grade, and send it via email with an explanation. I’d be much more likely to help someone that I see is trying.
Responded in other places, but also, is it a firm D or are you reacting to a D you saw? If you got a "D" because the teacher put in a code that calculates a 0...then you might be overreacting. You need to talk with your teacher, explain the situation, share doctors notes, show screenshots of editing history, and conclude with "I understand if this isn't possible, but I hope you'd reconsider. Thank you." But, again, is it a firm 0? Or is it a temporary zero? Check your gradebook to see if you aren't missing a code like ABS (absent) or EXT (extension). Those calculate as 0s even though I may still provide the student time to make it up.
Ex teacher here. Let the teacher know. I used Canvas for submitting assignments and it worked well. This was one of the drawbacks. Once it’s locked it can be unlocked for a student to turn in late work. I did it all the time
I had a similar situation where I couldn’t submit an assignment on time due to illness and the teacher had a zero late work acceptance policy. I submitted it anyway with a caption “I know this won’t count for anything, but the assignment was fun so I did it anyway” and received full credit 😅
That’s the way to go. I would have given you full credit for that as well.
Ya if you did this for me I’d give you your grade too.
Depends, how long did you have to finish it? If you have a job, you’d have to call off when you’re sick and communicate to your boss about deadlines you can’t meet due to it. Professional communication goes a long way, but if this was a longer term project it is also best practice not to leave it till the last minute. If you knew you felt too sick to work on it, in the future, send an email BEFORE it’s late explaining and politely request an extension.
Be careful with your language. Do you have a flu case diagnosed or do you just feel bad? Don’t use flu without a positive test. It isn’t believable when you are late in an assignment.
Went to the Hospital yesterday, and they said it’s either a cold or the flu.
Were you excused absent?
What prevented you from turning it in digitally?
Did you call in sick? Did you contact your teacher before the deadline about the issue?
You're going to have to talk to the teacher.
Email the teacher and also get a doctor's note. Anyone who doesn't accept that is an a-hole
Not a teacher, but a mom with a senior in high school. Email your teacher and let the know. Sometimes they can accept via email or unlock the assignment.
Email your teacher! Have your parent tell the school that this was a legitimate medical absence. The deadline will need to be extended.
Sickness is always an excused absence, which includes being excused from turning work in. Our school policy is that you get half the length of time you were off for (rounded up to a whole day) to catch up. So at our school, if you were sick yesterday, you'd be able to turn in yesterday's assignment today with no penalty. You need to ask your teacher to open the assignment for you because you were sick.
TLDR: just ask your teacher.
Please don’t wait for another minute, send the email and then go to the Dr. TODAY.
Went to hospital yesterday, I should be alright.
Did you get a dr note? It might help to attach it to the email you send.
Or even just whatever they did send home at discharge.
Send the teacher an email immediately and give them a solution. Say, "I will have this done by Sunday. I am usually a good student. I truly was sick. Let me know how you want me to submit it since the assignment is locked. Thanks so much." Do not go on and on with your symptoms or be overly defensive. If they don't respond TODAY, send another email but have your patents send one too. Nothing aggressive. If you haven't heard back by tomorrow (Saturday) finish the assignment and email it to the teacher ccing your parents and the principal. As a teacher, I would never just close an assignment knowing that a B student simply didn't turn something in. But that's me.
People are sick of late work. Do you expect a plane you missed to turn back because you have a limp excuse?
I turned it in today. I went to the hospital for around an hour yesterday.
Can you call the teacher? If you can, then tell the teacher that you sent an email and you are going to the Dr today.
