• I'm the only Hispanic I know allergic to avocadoes

I'm not Hispanic, but as a kid who grew up on the border I was totally fucked with that allergy lol

That's gotta suck I found out that as an infant I loved em till it put me in the Hospital and almost killed me.

I love avocados so much, it's a huge bummer. Luckily my allergy presents as bad hives and not life threatening but still.

Be careful. Your reaction can change at any time.

Oh 100%, I stay away from them entirely as much as I can. My MIL has a bad habit of feeding them to me on occasion though so now I have to ask for recipes before I eat her food 🤣

Im the only Asian I know who's allergic to soy

I haven’t confirmed it but I’m allergic to latex and react to a few of the latex related food/fruits. I’ve avoided them ever since I found out. So you are not alone.

I didn't know avocados were related to latex, but in hindsight now it makes sense that the boy in my second grade class who was seemingly allergic to everything had that on the list. I didn't even know what an avocado was at the time so it seemed extra weird to me.

I had no idea either until I developed the latex allergy and then noticed I’d react to certain foods. Some of the best foods are on there too unfortunately.

Bananas, balloons, avocado and bandaids over here… sigh.

My husband is allergic to all pitied fruit, unfortunately including but not limited to avocados. Birch allergy.

Same. My mom told me when I was little that the itching in the back of my throat was my imagination. Now, the list goes to everything except bananas and oranges, but I can get a few strawberries and cherries in before I get a reaction. Blackberries, though, are the worst.

And sometimes I can eat an apple slice with no reaction, but when I was 20 they made my chest start wheezing and I knew that was it for me.

If they're heated, like applesauce or fried, they're safe.

I miss plums and nectarines the most.

No I am also Hispanic and DEATHLY allergic to Avocado AND banana

    No licuados for me 😭

White girl with avocado and cilantro. I’ve often you about how much it would suck if I was Hispanic. You poor thing.

White, brown, black it don't matter lol it truly is sad period you know how many healthy diets rely on avocados too many haha

People allergic to latex are often allergic to avocados as well

  • The alpha-gal syndrome allergy to meat and dairy caused by a tick bite is pretty weird.

I have alpha-gal and it is a weird one. I can’t have any type of pork. Fun fact: some band aids have some kind of pork in the adhesive. I have a scar on my arm in the shape of a band aid. For me beef is a little better. I can eat hamburger maybe 1x per week and be ok. Steak is a no go. I can’t eat soft cheese but hard cheese is fine. No milk. For me the biggest danger is macadamia nuts. I get very confused and don’t really know what’s going on. I end up blacking out. The last time they gave me a shot of something in the ambulance. When I got to the ER I went to the bathroom and threw up and had diarrhea over the next hour. After that I was fine. Please be careful of ticks

I bet the bandaids have gelatin in them.

I hear ostrich and emu are safe and the closest proxy for beef that has no impact for alpha-gal

I have a family member with this. Also got it a second time somehow according to the doctors because her symptoms sharply rose at some point after her initial diagnosis

You get used to fish and chicken and preparing your own foods.

Fowl not just chicken (duck, quail, turkey). You can have emu too. Seafood including crustaceans and shellfish.

I have this and a mustard allergy. It makes shopping hell because of pre- seasoned products.

When I got diagnosed I was in complete shock. Did a year of no mammal then started reintroducing beef and can tolerate it. I was retested and values went way down so technically in remission. I had the worst reaction to pork products. I’ve heard of some people having reactions just from inhaling someone cooking it. It’s wild.

Yes I have to stay away from pork completely. I usually don’t react to the smell of anything. But I did go in to a Ben & Jerry with my family once. While I was in line I felt like I was going to vomit. I had to go out for air quick.

I'm one of the fume reactive ones. I have really bad reactions to cooking meat (especially pork) and even cooking dairy. My diet is stricter than most too; I also can't do any level of mammal byproducts so I lost refined sugar. That's harder than also having to avoid dairy to me, sugar is in everything and even some cane sugars must be contaminated or something, so I stick to organic when I can. It's one of my worst reactions so I don't even play with it anymore. I'll do without before I tempt it.

I'm also not sure if it's the fume reactions or just how "lucky" I am but I'm entering my sixth year with no positive changes despite all the cuts. I've only had a couple more tick bites early on and I've only had a few contamination incidents. Body is still a mess.

I will admit I'm in a weird state of acceptance at the moment deapite all this. I swing through my feelings like you would any kind of grief, but it has gotten easier. It'd be cool to get some things back, but I've grown content...for now. I went from no allergies to a complicated list, so going off the rails every now and then is understandable. Many have told me they couldn't deal with my level of issues, and I don't blame them. But I can't go back so here we are. Maybe one day the research will catch up and folks like me can get some relief.

I have this. Mine isn’t sensitive to dairy, but I am allergic to all other non-dairy mammal protein. The killer is gelatin. It is in so many things and the reaction is pretty severe, and comes on more rapidly than the usual four hour time between ingestion and symptoms.

Two years for me. The cherry on top is that carrageenan has alpha gal. This means that lots of premade vegan meals and vegan cheeses are not alpha gal safe.

It’s such a pain in the ass. Eating out is just not fun at all anymore.

  • The SUN!!

I'm not allergic exactly, but I have a massive reaction to sun exposure. I get burns within 10 minutes of exposure, fatigue, itching, peeling skin, and an overall yucky feeling if I'm out in the sun too much in a single day even when wearing sunscreen.

It's made family trips to Florida a LOT of fun.

Exactly. If I am out in the sun I notice when I go back inside I have a big pounding headache and can't breathe like I have a huge head cold sometimes my face will hurt or get itchy even without a sunburn and my whole body is exhausted for a couple days almost like a hangover feeling.

Question- the first time my kids have sun exposure in ā€œsummer seasonā€ they swell and and I have to give them benedryl. Theirs goes away completely and they are tolerant to the sun for the rest of the summer. Do you have the same or is it every time you’re in the sun? Also, I will sound crunchy, but we don’t use sunscreen because it gives them hives. Have you done a patch test with sunscreens to see if that’s the culprit? Genuinely curious.

I have something very similar, only I get a rash every time I have sun exposure for the first time in a while. I live in upstate NY so I will go months without sun and without fail when I’m in the sun for the first time in a while I get rashes all over my hands and arms. Happens if I vacation in winter too. But then I tan easily for the rest of the summer!

This is called polymorphous light eruption, in case you want a name for it. I have it as well!

I have this too, and now I have a name for it. Thank you!

Sadly I never put sunscreen on either. My daughter plays Fastpitch softball i used to think it was my dust allergy from the dirt fields but as she got older the last 4 or 5 years most fields are turf and my symptoms are worse everytime I am out in the sun even if I stay mostly under a canopy or umbrella and don't get burnt I have the symptoms and sometimes I forget and when I get home and get miserable my husband reminds me we've been in the sun he sees my symptoms sometimes before I realize what is going on lol

I was exactly like your kids growing up. Got sent home from school in May one year, after I swelled up when they made me go outside with the rest of the kids for gym class.

If you haven’t tried Ombrelle sunscreen, it’s what my doctor made my parents get for me and it’s what I still use today.

You had to go there...didn't you. Hello everyone, sun allergy here...its miserable (It was better this year though).

My seasonal allergies got so bad, the doctor says my immune system caused me to become allergic to the sun (photodermititis) When exposed to sunlight (even under an umbrella) if my skin isn't covered it will feel like my skin is being heated up until its on fire. I'll get a hive like rash that puts mosquito bites to shame. Its absolutely miserable. SPF shirts, staying out of direct sunlight, reapplying the strongest sunscreen and staying inside from 11-4pm helps greatly.

I developed this one two years ago and I still can't believe it. I'm now the owner of 10 long-sleeved SPF sun shirts and a whole lot of Clobetasol ointment, which is not how I ever envisioned my summer wardrobe going.

Do you have a Uniqlo in your area? The Japanese do the best UV and Heattec clothing around. They call themselves a technology company before a clothing brand.

Ooo, I didn't know that. I'll look into it. We do have a Uniqlo in town.

This!! I have a mild sun allergy now as an adult but grew up in the California sun. It makes no sense to me.

Im from Scotland so no much sun but I would take the most amazing tan as a kid through the summers but the minute I hit my teens those tans faded into the past and when I hit my late 20s I developed PMLE and now I’m out of menopause I’ve started tanning again, it’s bizarre! Surely hormones must play some part in it surely in women.

Same! Polymorphous Light Eruption. And I love a good tan, so it’s low and slow to even get a small amount of color.

Not so weird! I know a lot of people with sun allergy including my self! Red bumpy itchy skin.

  • My dog is allergic to humans. Not kidding.

Our cat is allergic to cats (aka himself, we do not have any other cats).

I had a friend whose dog was allergic to grass!

I have a corgi that’s allergic to grass. He requires steroids and monthly allergy injections šŸ˜…

My dog is allergic to grass (all kinds native to USA) and meat/seafood. Rough life!

Hopefully he doesn't decide to find you a new home...

Same! Human dander. But by the time i found out , she was conditioned to sleep in the bed. So nightly showers for me, frequent bedding changes, daily vacuuming.

I don't know why I'm so amused that it's the same strategies you'd use if you were allergic to her, apart from you being the one getting bathed frequently.

My dog is allergic to meat 🤣

She can eat duck and crocodile and that is it.

Mine is allergic to chicken. Everything has chicken in it!

    How’d you figure that out?

There’s allergy testing for dogs. Often handled by board-certified veterinary dermatologists

Omg! My friend's dog had that. They could NOT figure out for the longest time what the problem was, but eventually they vet figured out the dog was allergic to human dander. None of us could believe it

Oh good lord. That sounds terrible.

  • Let me tell you the sad tale of the Irish girl allergic to potatoes

    You poor thing.Ā

I have Irish heritage, and when I was tested as a kid, I had a slight reaction to white potatoes. I'd probably need to eat like 10 orders of fries in a row to notice anything, and I eat a baked potato with lunch several times a week without issue, but you're not alone

  • I’m a veterinary nurse. Once had a patient’s report come back from the lab with the dog allergic to many things, including humans :(

I had a dog with over 15 diagnosed allergies: humans, cats, dust, grass, hay, pollen, pine trees, beef, chicken, fish, other trees, cows, horses, etc. She also had three legs but not because of allergies. The only food she could eat was this rabbit novel protein diet.

She was so sick all the time, itchy, infections out of nowhere, always chewing her remaining feet bloody, so my then-husband were contacted to adopt her. At the time we only adopted animals with specific criteria: at least one significant physical disability; and a potentially expensive, mysterious health problem. We took her to Colorado State for diagnostics which figured out that it was allergies really quick.

She got allergy shots for the environmental allergies. After a couple of years, she was fine and didn’t need the shots anymore!

I always joked that the shelter asked me about allergies to the dog, but not the dog's allergies to me. No idea if my dog was allergic to me, but he was the best boy.

  • Water

There’s a lady named Cherelle Farrugia who ended up becoming allergic to water after getting pregnant,

Apparently someone in her support group suggested getting pregnant again to see if it’d cure it, and interestingly enough it worked? The human body is weird

I have a relative who stopped growing leg and arm hair after having her last kid. Including armpit.

My hair on my head thinned so much after I was pregnant that I’ve been wondering if a second pregnancy would fix it 🧐

My hair was incredible with my first pregnancy. Legit best it had ever been. Baby boy.

Second one, absolutely ruined. Horrifying. 0/10, would recommend. Baby boy.

Third? Just like the first - fuggin incredible. I have no idea why. Baby girl.

    Quit while you’re ahead!! šŸ™‚

That’s an interesting result, the human body sure is odd

My first pregnancy triggered MCAS. My body just randomly goes into various levels of anaphylaxis when it desires.

Someone in my bumper group got MCAS and POTS after her first pregnancy. Completely derailed her life. She was a chef. I hope you are doing ok!

MCAS sucks. I can mostly cope with it when I know what my triggers are, but sometimes it's just a random one of the 30 ingredients in this skincare product and there's no way to narrow it down. And heat and cold!? It's so ridiculous.

Pregnancy does weird things to your immune system. I'd gotten over my cat allergies before my first pregnancy but ended up with an asthma diagnosis and inhalers. My allergist said about 1/3 of women have their allergies get better, 1/3 stays the same, 1/3 gets worse.

Kinda wish this was taught in education classes about pregnancy, the amount of stuff that I’ve learnt from the internet is insane

I was horribly lactose intolerant until my first pregnancy. While pregnant I could drink as much milk as I wanted and I did. When she was born I was lactose intolerant again. When I had my youngest, I stayed cured of lactose intolerance for 10+ years. It is just now starting to creep back. My OB said, yeah that happens sometimes.

I haven’t heard of the lactose Intolerance fading with it before, you learn something new everyday I guess

    That and one's own sweat.

  • Chocolate gives me and my sons seizures. I don't know if it's an allergy and there are epileptics in my family. I grew out of it at 11 and I'm hoping it's the same for my boys.

I'm allergic to vanilla! It's not a bad allergy, but my mouth and throat will start hurting in this weird achey way if I eat stuff with vanilla in it.

My cousin is allergic to chocolate. He breaks out in hives.

I know for me blood sugar spikes or drops decrease my seizure threshold/ can trigger them and chocolate also stimulates the brain more like caffeine which is a trigger. I hope they grow out of it and things get better I also hope this wasn’t unwanted information I just knew that about me and find your story interesting.

  • I had my daughter tested for environmental allergies because her seasonal allergies are so bad and we were shocked to learn that cockroaches are a common allergen and she is very allergic to them!

She'll have to watch out for coffee as she gets older, my colleague with a cockroach allergy is often triggered by cheap coffees.

please say there's some commonality in the chemical composition or something and it's not that coffee is often part cockroach

    It’s the second one.

    Are… you joking?

It’s mostly in ground coffee. I grind my beans every morning because I think they taste better freshly ground. It could also just be that it tastes better with less cockroach in it. šŸ¤·šŸ½ā€ā™€ļø

The FDA allows a certain number of insect parts in coffee, like 5%. That’s a lot.

Why specifically in coffee? And how are they even measuring how many ā€œinsect partsā€ even end up in coffee? I am so confused

Chef here. It’s not specifically for coffee, it’s for anything mass processed in a facility. They’re called Defect Action Levels. Basically, it’s impossible to know whether there’s an insect in every machine, at all times, while making metric tons of flour or peanut butter or whatever. So there’s a set amount that the FDA considers ā€œnatural or unavoidableā€

It’s recommended that people with shrimp or cockroach allergies should buy whole coffee beans

I have heard it is specifically ground coffee you have to watch out for.

I'll add that I found out about this allergy when I had a significant reaction to vacuuming dead ladybugs off of our back porch. There's some cross-reactivity with the cockroach allergy, so be aware for your daughter if that's a possibility! (It was technically the asian lady beetle, not ladybugs, in my case, but I don't know if that matters.)

    huge problem for asthmatic patients

I also tested positive for a cockroach allergy many years ago. One of the weirder allergies I’ve heard of!

  • I’m allergic to Claritin D… you know, an allergy medication. šŸ˜… I ended up in the ER with hives and was told it was likely a precursor to an anaphylactic reaction and to never take it again. I can take other allergy meds just fine, but something in Claritin D specifically triggers it.

To be fair, years later we discovered I have Mast Cell Activation Disorder, which is probably the real cause.

I’m allergic to Benadryl! I feel you, fellow common-allergy-medication avoider

  • Allergic to the seeds of a strawberry (tannin) but able to eat strawberries if they've been processed or cleaned within an inch of its life. Not worth it, I stay away.
Allergic to anything from sheep; wool, oils. Break out in hives. Look like I have the measles but localized to where there been contact.
Allergic to compounds of certain over the counter and prescription meds. Its always an adventure if they want to try something new.
And most recently discovered: Allergy to petroleum products, no more Vaseline. And finally and it took a long time to narrow this one down = Styrofoam. (Most states still use this for take out and if I cut into salads, or hot foods release the oils its being ingested) Love this one because when someone asks me how I'm doing, I respond with "Fine since I took Styrofoam out of my diet" No one seems to know how to respond to that one. lmao

Styrene itself is nasty stuff. Those who work in polystyrene production facilities can have a lot of very unpleasant side effects, allergies aside, like headaches, fatigue, loss of coordination, confusion, etc.

PSA: It's not a good idea to heat food in polystyrene containers.

I discovered that I am allergic to Keflex (an antibiotic). I get severe gastrointestinal reactions as well as flu like symptoms when I take it and I’ve been prescribed it twice in my life. I also cannot tolerate really strong pain meds like OxyContin Edit: spelling.

  • Was a chef and we had a couple of people allergic to interesting things.

    Pastry chef - flour

    Prep chef - carrots

    Me - green peppers.

I'm a chef and I'm allergic to carrots and raw tomato. I can still eat them but they make my tongue and roof of my mouth burn and tingle a bit. Still love raw tomato on a burger, but I stick with garden tomatoes so it's worth it.Ā

I once inhaled a piece of carrot while I was prepping (walking talking and chewing carrots like an idiot) and almost literally died. It got stuck in my throat for about a minute, I tried coughing it out but my coughs got wheezy. Finally dislodged it and lived. I don't really eat raw carrot anymore. They make my hands itch when I prep them so I wear gloves now. I developed that around 35 y/o.

  • my ex said she’s allergic to fresh cut grass.

nothing will make me feel miserable quicker than fresh cut grass, as a kid I assumed everyone was allergic until a friend told me how much she loved to roll in the grass after the lawn was mowed. I was *horrified * at the thought lol

My dad once played a game that involved rolling me and my sibling down a hill. We learned I am very allergic to grass that day.

In elementary school, they always had us run laps on a field after the grass was cut. I just assumed I was super unfit until middle school had us run on a track and it was suddenly way easier

The way it burns my skin- did not realize everyone else was not in pain sitting on the grass until far too late in life.Ā

I'm allergic to certain grasses by contact! Especially if I've been exercising and I sit down, whatever skin touches grass breaks out in hives.

It may not be the fresh cut grass, but all the pollen that’s stirred up when the grass is being cut. My pollen allergies HATE freshly mowed grass

  • Maybe not the weirdest but everyone’s always aghast that I’m allergic to garlic

    Vampire spotted

See, now I feel stupid. I once knew someone allergic to garlic and not once did it occur to me to call them a vampire. Damn my slow brain.

?? Super pale ?? Lots of dishes are made with blood ? Practically no sunlight …. The decedents of vampires are the Irish lol

Sameeeee, I developed the allergy jn my late 20's. Its so cruel to know what garlic bread tastes like and not be able to eat it 😭

Hey you're probably allergic to onions too then!

source: I'm allergic to onions and I found out the fun way garlic is in the same family :)

  • It is possible to be allergic to one's own hormones.

Yep. I'm a 35yo woman and when I get a high spike in estrogen (such as after I give birth) I get severe complicated migraines.

High levels of estrogen binds to mast cells which then liberates histamine, so that makes sense.

  • Oral allergy syndrome because I have it and it’s so random

I have that too. I was having some allergy testing done and mentioned symptoms with specific fruits and veggies. Turns out the allergist had written a paper on OAS and suddenly my world made sense.

My mom thought I was making up my cantaloupe allergy for YEARS until she read an article on OAS in Family Circle magazine.

Me, too! Kiwis got me last week.

Growing up, I always just thought that everyone’s mouth got itchy when eating apples šŸ˜…

  • I have Mast Cell Activation Syndrome so I'm allergic to a lot of things, but my weirdest food allergies are lettuce and cilantro. Unfortunately both are in a ton of things so I have to be very careful. I also had people(mostly relatives) not believe me before, sneak it into the food in tiny pieces where I can't identify it, and had to use my epi pen because of those people. I don't eat anything I haven't made myself when I see those people now. I'm also very cautious when going out to eat, but most of the time they always take my allergies seriously.

My weirdest non-food allergy is I'm allergic to hot and cold. I get hives if I take a shower that is too hot and I get hives when I walk into the freezer at Costco. I can't use a heating pad or ice because I get hives where they are applied.

I am also allergic to cold. Those hives are wildly itchy, too. When I mentioned to my allergist at my first appointment with him, he said, "You know, that is a well documented allergy, but honestly, we never see it." I told him I could come back on a frigid day and not wear gloves or a scarf and he could witness it firsthand. I was surprised to find out that it was an important thing to have noted in my chart because I also have asthma and it's considered a dangerous trigger.

I have a child who is allergic to cold. He has to wear a balaclava when it's cold out and has an inhaler and epipen prescribed for it because it can cause both asthma and anaphylaxis. His most common reaction is huge hives though. I've had people act like I'm crazy when I tell them he has this allergy. I know it sounds made up, I had no idea it existed either until he started getting hives and asthma attacks when it was cold out. We live in Minnesota. It's not the greatest place to have this allergy. It was -25 with wind-chill today and you better believe I made him wear his balaclava and had his meds with me when we had to go out.

I’m also allergic to cold!!! It’s such a strange allergy. Most people, if I say I’m allergic to cold laugh and say me too! I need a vacation somewhere warm. Not the same. Ugh.

My allergist likes to playfully say that I’m allergic to my own blood. Really it’s chronic urticaria, any type of heat triggers me so quickly. Direct sunlight, a heater on, infrared heat, any type of heat! Shout out to Xolair injections for helping me live a normal life!

I also have MCAS but it’s totally idiopathic. No specific trigger. I just randomly have severe episodes where I can get close to anaphylaxis.

Samesies ā€œI’m allergic to the worldā€

MCAS here too. I’m allergic to nothing (with allergy testing) and yet allergic to almost everything. When I tell people about it (including nurses) I start with ā€œI know this sounds totally made up but I swear it’s not and the diagnosis comes from a reputable immunologistā€

I was going to bring up being allergic to cold if I hadn't seen your comment--I met someone who's allergic to the cold for the first time in my thirties and I'd never heard of such a thing before him. Poor guy was an airman assigned to a base in Montana!

I have the same thing! Unfortunately, I have many food allergies now (almost my entire, pre diagnosis diet). But the weirdest ones are vibrations and my own period. My hormones during my cycle make me itchy. Vibrations can cause nausea and stomach pains.

  • Semen. Not going to be fun for those people who are attracted to guys. 😬

You can also be allergic to one specific person's semen but not others.

I was! My body knew he was a bad choice.

My sister has this allergy and people don't believe her.. I mean, guys don't believe her.

Condoms and IVF if she wants to be pregnant. But that's awful and I'm sure discovering and diagnosing that allergy is traumatic.

She already had 3 kids and is now sterilized. I think the allergy developed later in life? She's in her late 40s and only mentioned it in the last 6 years. Maybe she was embarrassed or didn't understand what was causing the problem? I've never really asked for details because simply knowing she has the allergy is enough for me. She's also allergic to eggs.

    Eggs. And sperm. The irony.

Bwahaha, never thought of it like that!

  • Dermatographia. It's described as an allergy to pressure. In my case, they tried to give me a scratch test for allergies and all of the scrapes welted up. It's not super uncommon either!

  • Cardio-induced rhinitis. Put simply, I’m allergic to exercise.

My cousin has this. EVERYONE thinks it’s a joke.

  • The lining of cans. Eating out is basically impossible for them because most food/spices/ingredients are stored in a can at some point.

How does one figure that out?

A ton of trial and error and elimination diets. It took years to determine.

  • My cousin is very allergic to his hair. Eyelashes, the works.

  • Idk how weird it is, but I'm allergic to hibicleans which is a common soap used in the medical world. I found out because I was scrubbed with it prior to a surgery so healing from that was miserable.

Me too! I got blisters from it because it was under bandages and it didn't get washed off for several days.

  • Mine I have mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) so I have an allergic reaction to my own sweat and blood. My periods cause an allergic reaction and I can’t use pads or tampons. I’m allergic to the lubricant in certain condoms because of it. I also have inconsistent allergy response to most food and that includes water sometimes water will cause my throat to swell up

  • I am allergic to cardio exercise, especially in the cold, which i thought was weird.

Until my doctor told me about the reason he knows about this weird rare allergy — he has another patient who is allergic to exercise only after he eats pineapple.

So yeah. Exercise pineapple allergy wins imo.

  • I’m allergic to cockroaches & their nests (their droppings & sheddings)

    I’ll let y’all know if I have a reaction at a restaurant!

Yep! My daughter has that same allergy -

  • I'm allergic to heat. As in my body literally breaks out in itchy red hives if it gets too warm

Even worse is that I wasn't born with it, it just started happening after getting Covid once a few years ago. You can just become allergic to temperature, apparently

  • I'm allergic to aloe and jackfruit

Edit: and whatever's in anti itch lotion

  • I’m weirdly allergic to the sticky stuff on bandages and tape. I break out in hives.

I’m also allergic to wine, cockroaches, pine trees, grass of any kind, milk (though I can eat hard cheeses), and pet dander (dog, cat, bird).

I’m allergic to adhesives too. Also found out the hard way that this includes the Dermabond skin glue that surgeons like to use on incisions. Apparently it’s the cyanoacrylates in the glue that makes me turn into one giant hive with a super itchy mouth/throat.

  • I’m allergic to the preservative phosphoric acid, which means I’m allergic to most sodas.

  • The cold. My kid developed cold urticaria and breaks out in a rash if exposed to cold water or snow / very cold rain.

  • Vitamin E.

Topical, not ingested, but still. Take a look at how many skin care products have vitamin e (or tocopherols) added. Also allergic to a whole bunch of other stuff, but the fricken vitamin e is the most absurd.

  • Not necessarily the weirdest, but a super serious drag to those afflicted: tattoo ink allergy. Even heavily tattooed people with no history of problems can get new ink with a new ingredient and sign up for permanent irritation at the site. You're pretty much fucked if it happens.

I developed an allergy to tattoo ink after I got pregnant with my oldest! Its only SOME of my tattoos too, they get really itchy and raised and feel hot and swollen. It's particularly bad if the spot gets a lot of sun exposure.

  • Wood. I’ve known two people with this.

It's possibly more allergic to the tree type. I am allergic to several types of trees so if we burned that type of wood in our fireplace I would have a bad reaction

  • Registered Vet Tech; Owner brought their dog in to do an allergy testing for its severe allergies that came out of seemingly nowhere. No medications/food changes were helping. Well, turns out their dog was actually allergic to their new pet cat so they had to rehome their cat.

  • I'm Allergic to something in black pepper & also to onions. oddly enough not allergic to garlic or red/ cayenne or other peppers. I suspect it must be the piperine in black. Have no idea what compound is in onions that is not in garlic.

Do any other alliums bother you - chives, shallots, leeks, scallions?

I lived in an academic food house where one of the people who lived with us was allergic to garlic, onion, and also some other seasonings. You never think about how much you use seasonings until you can't anymore.Ā

I have a friend who is allergic to any garlic, onions unless cooked, and olive oil.
Whenever we invite her to dinner, I always double check, and good thing, because last time, I found out she's also allergic to canola oil.
Dinner parties get more and more challenging. We have the gluten free folks, we have the vegetarians, we have the no pork, we have the ones who can't tolerate cheese or dairy.
At that point, we make a mezze.

I realized as an adult that I'm allergic to quite a lot of things, including most spices/seasonings. Always have been but my parents called it "stop whining, you're fine!"

Occasionally I'll roll the dice just to enjoy some tasty food, but mostly I stick with salt and pepper plus maybe powered garlic or onion or mushroom. It sucks.

I’m allergic to all peppers due to my nightshade family allergy, which doesn’t include black pepper, because black pepper is a peppercorn, not a true pepper!

  • I’m allergic to the fake mint flavoring in toothpaste

  • Their own muscles. There's actually two variants depending on which part: Lambert Eaton or Myastenia Gravis.

The on set is slow paralysis as they stop functioning.

The first is progressive whilst the second can be reversed but both will kill you dead in weeks if not diagnosed properly.

  • I work in the medical field and had a person fill out a questionnaire with "I can eat eggs and I can eat butter but I cannot eat eggs cooked in butter" as an allergy.

Chemical reaction makes a new substance that they react to?

  • A close friend of mine is allergic to cinnamon.

I don't know if it is an allergy or an intolerance, but it has gotten worse over the years to be completely debilitating, but I can not digest any beans other than green beans. Even bean-adjacent things like lentils are a no. And I live in deep south Louisiana - i miss red beans and rice!

I can take supplements like Beano, but that only cuts the agony down to 48 hours instead of 72.

I grew up on beans so it is not a case of "you need to eat more to up your tolerance". I was always badly affected even though I ate them very often and it only got worse.

  • People allergic to sun or grass always blows my mind

But also the fact that there could be small tribal groups in our ancient human past that don’t eat certain foods because one person had a deathly reaction to like a tomato so everyone thinks tomatoes are poisonous.

  • I’m allergic to fake Christmas trees. I get a terrible rash!

  • I have a condition called Mast Cell Activation Syndrome. Mast cells are what trigger allergic reactions in the body (histamine is the most well known mast cell), and mine are hyperactive. I develop new allergies frequently and suddenly. I’ve had it my whole life, and was finally diagnosed in my early teens. Here’s some of my weirder allergies:

I’m allergic to the nightshade family. Potatoes (doesn’t include sweet potatoes or yams), tomatoes, eggplant, all peppers (doesn’t include black peppercorns), and tobacco. I developed it when I was 18. Did you know a lot of pre shredded cheeses have potato starch on them? Did you know paprika is used as a food coloring in an insane amount of things? Did you know tobacco smoke residue can cause allergic reactions even after washing garments? I learned the answers to these the hard way lmao. I used to eat peppers daily, make my own hot sauces, and obviously everyone loves potatoes. I hate my allergies to this family the most, and if I ever stop being allergic to these I would die a happy person.

I’m also allergic to the aster/daisy family. Chamomile, calendula, Stevia, wormwood, echinacea, arnica, tarragon, artichokes, lettuce, chicory, burdock, sunflowers, safflower, dahlias, daisies, chrysanthemums, cosmos, dandelions, asters, ragweed, yarrow, zinnia. Developed this a couple months ago, and still being baffled by how many cosmetic products and foods have these in them. Why is sunflower seed oil in everything? Why is there chamomile extract in premade canned frosting? Why do we put stevia in things that also have regular sugar in them?

I’m also allergic to lilac and jasmine, but so far, not olives (same family) šŸ¤žwhich sucks because lilac honey is godly and jasmine is such a nice fragrance.

I’m also allergic to aluminum (which is in basically every antiperspirant and yes it is a nightmare to find deodorants), and nickel— the weird thing with these is just how severe and sensitive my body is to it, like I can’t wear jeans because the buttons touching my belly causes blistering and hives instantly, it scars and discolors my skin.

I’m allergic to grass and hay, sitting on or going near either gives horrible hives and swelling and asthma attacks. I have to wear a mask outdoors in the spring and summer.

My most severe allergy is to dust, I’ve has anaphylaxis from it twice.

I also react to my own sweat, but that comes and goes, some days are worse than others. This one is confusing to me and my providers since it changes up every few weeks, but at times, it is for sure an allergy, and others I’m fine.

I have a bunch of other allergies but they’re more common (and thus, easier to avoid/manage). MCAS is managed for me through insane amounts of allergy medication (I take 7 antihistamines regularly, plus emergency meds) as well as mast cell stabilization medications and inhalers. Obviously, I also avoid all known allergens, and also, obviously that’s difficult.

  • im mildly allergic to raw apples and cherries, no one believed me until I did some google researching on it

turns out they have a similar protein to birch pollen (which im allergic to) that gets destroyed when cooked

  • I am allergic to Broccoli and used to love it until one day had a reaction and Doctor and allergist said DO NOT eat it any more!

That’s my sister with mushrooms! Her husband and kid hate them so she never has them but I cooked them for a family dinner and she went HAM and then had a reaction. She was so sad about it

My friend is allergic to broccoli. Since I'm lactose intolerant we joke that broccoli cheese soup is our shared nemesis. I got her a Christmas ornament that's a bowl of broccoli cheese soup.

  • I've had a patient who was supposedly allergic to cortisone.

Not allergic, but wicked side effects to some oral steroids to help with a rash, and also a prescription steroid inhaler made me feel like garbage.Ā

  • My mother is very allergic to turkey but not chicken. Also can’t wear gold because it causes her to break out, yup she’s allergic to inert metal.

She has such a list of allergies that when she is taken to the hospital they put see list on mobile phone. Which includes a lot of painkillers (and some she can’t take because drug interactions) so the only one she can take is paracetamol.

My mom was allergic to all poultry. She said, "If it has feathers, it's a no!" She didn't know she was allergic until she was in her 70s. I insisted on allergy testing because of her bad GI issues and chicken was the ONLY reaction she had and it was faint. She confirmed it by eating small bites of poultry and gauging the results. She decided her testing was done pretty quickly, lol.

  • I'm allergic to pineapple and pineapple flavourings. But the only time I got anaphylaxis was eating some novelty cricket snacks. No idea what the allergen was because I'm fine with shellfish, and I handle bugs all the time in summer.

  • Friend of mine is allergic to Benadryl and steroids. She found out after going to the hospital for an allergic reaction, they gave her both, and it got worse

  • Eliminated every allergen I could think of from my diet and still had awful excema. In fact, it was getting worse despite my ultra healthy diet of almost entirely salads and grilled chicken. Turns out, I’m allergic to lettuce and chicken. Oops

  • Water, I have it. Its only a skin reaction but its a bitch. Before you ask yes I shower and bathe its just not super fun. I get hives. I have a ton more allergies so I take meds that just make it so I cant have allergic reactions so I can live semi normal.

  • I heard about allergy to vodka and still don't know if that was an excuse or real

    I'm allergic to all alcohol

I’m allergic to vodka! Literally just one sip makes me really ill, it’s the grains! People always assume it’s potatoes but cheap vodka is made with grain, and that’s usually what causes the allergy!
