I need advice on buying a new car, I drive a 240k round trip to work 3-5 days a week. Is there any electric car that would be suitable for this journey? I currently have a diesel van and want to make the change due to work having free charging points. Also sick of paying so much for diesel

90% of the journey is motorway so >120kph. I also have about 12k cash and can pay off the remainder whatever way possible.

Or am I just better buying a diesel car for around 10k? As I'm aware I'm at the limit of most ev ranges and the range anxiety probably ain't worth it.

  • It depends. The EV series of Kia have good ranges and the batteries come with a seven year warranty. We bought one last year and we get around 400 km from each charge. I also use it in 120 kph roads.

Edit: sorry, missed that you have charging stations at work

That's encouraging. Kias are one I hadnt thought of previously

The Kia battery warranty is limited to 150,000km, afaik. You wouldnt be long doing that mileage- 3 or 4 years. Most other EVs have a similar warranty, but check out Toyota; I think their batteries have an unlimited mileage warranty.

What kWh battery is your Kia?

We got the 84 kWh updated version. It also came with a free home charger.

  • Kia might be still doing 0% APR on their cars. Check them out. Hyundai is equally good and slightly cheaper than Kia as well. They are doing 2.5% APR. With the newer ones, you really don't need range anxiety especially if you have charging docks at work. With 800V charging, at the worst you might need 15 minutes at a public charging station.

As long as you charge at home and work, you should be grand. I feel EVs are the better choice.

  • Join Irish ev association on Facebook. They are very good for advice. Lots of people in the group do motorway driving also!

    Will take a look now

    Face......book?

You'd be surprised by the amazing groups and communities they have on there. I was looking for a service manual for my motorbike when I was doing some custom lighting work it, and it wasn't available anywhere, reddit, motorcycle forums... Someone suggested trying Facebook, I was like bro, I don't use that, who goes there anymore, but I tried, I was shocked, genuine people you can connect with, dedicated groups, and their "Files" section have it all.

Let's say they are more progressive with their cars than their social media 😉

  • There are loads of EVs that will do 240km at 120kph in winter without range anxiety.

With free charging you only have to pay for tyres and depreciation/financing, but those costs can be significant.

You're better off asking r/evs_ireland for specific recommendations.

  • It looks like your post is about work! If you're looking for legal advice/advice about something that could be a legal issue we highly recommend also posting/crossposting to r/LegalAdviceIreland.

  • I have two EV's at home, a 4x4 and vans. I'll always jump in one of the EV's given the choice. I'm sick of modern diesels, open an intake manifold on any modern diesel and they will be caked in carbon. DPF's are a pain in the tits too with not enough mechanics knowing how to diagnose properly.

I've had to fork out on diesel repairs more than petrol or ev, I'm involved with vehicles through work.

If you have free charging go EV. Cleaner, quieter, smoother drive (transmission-wise), free charging (game changer).

I love the fact that I only stop at a petrol station for ice-creams now!

  • Diesel is your only way my man. Quite a few good deals still from VW depending on what you want

I don't understand why people are downvoting diesel options. The reality is they are still viable and cost effective options for many people at the moment.....if you're doing serious high milage. Especially for motorway driving.

Theres a bit of a thing here, if you suggest something thats not an EV or a toyota you’ll get downvotes.

  • I’ve a Ford Explorer. I do 130km a day, can easily get 3 return trips out of it in the middle of winter on 100%. At 80% I’d get 2 trips with <20% left. Fantastic car.

  • At that level of mileage (and add in weekend activity on top) that's a diesel decision to me.

You're probably doing close to 1000km per week. That's €90 per week in diesel. I understand electric would put around €50. So thats €40 a year which saves about €2k per year on "fuel".

However, if you're comparing an EV6 (lovely car by the way) to a 2.0 diesel high spec Skoda Octavia there could be anywhere up to €8k in price difference. That's 4 years of savings. The depreciation on an EV with 200,000km in 4 years is is scary to me.

Your EV will be chewing up tyres at 120kph as well. You'll also be servicing the diesel so again, how much of a saving is there there?

To me at that mileage, you're looking for a workhorse.

  • I'll be hung, but anyway. Why the fuck aren't you running it on green? Stay away from electric vans lad. 150-180 km range max on alot of them.2 boys I know got them from work and were launched in under 6 months because they weren't fit to do the 150km trip up.

  • Ah he left the m out of the KM.....my brain was scratching!
