Currently house hunting (depressing, might be able to buy a shed with some plumbing at the rate prices are). Have a few turn offs when I am looking - obviously, these are totally subjective (and in no order) and you might think things I like are awful so there is no shade intended!:

  1. Two story homes where the only toilet is downstairs - could not be dealing with this as someone who seems to always need the loo, as soon as the weather is cold my bladder shrivels šŸ˜… I would be up and down the stairs all night.

  2. Two story homes where the only toilet is downstairs and it’s at the very back of the house and you have to go through the kitchen to get to it. For the reasons set out at 1. above, only it’s worse.

  3. Spotlights. Absolutely hate the things. I have had very bad experiences with spotlights and I hate the temperamental tiny flashing demons.

  4. Grey upon grey upon grey. I like grey sometimes, but not everywhere and especially not grey flooring - which just makes me think of offices and sadness.

  5. Very ā€œbusyā€ tiles in a bathroom, or clashing tiles in a bathroom. Gives me a headache. And they date so quickly.

  6. Those large white and cream floor tiles that some people even have in living rooms. Great if you live in Spain, cold looking and functional (to me) in Ireland.

  7. Houses where the whole of the downstairs has been made open plan and there are no individual rooms except a bathroom - in the interests of cosiness and variety, I need to have at least one individual room downstairs (even if it’s tiny).

  8. Artificial grass.

  9. Yellow kitchen units, red kitchen units, or black kitchen units. Would give me a headache.

  10. Houses where they have glass panels instead of railings on a stairs. Too office-like for me.

  11. Giant skylights in the kitchen.

  12. Lots of wooden features where the wood has become orange or yellowed with age.

  13. Kitchen islands where the kitchen is not really big enough to have one, and they are just space wasters.

  14. Kitchens where there are only ground level units, and no units on top. For some reason this unnerves me, and my brain refuses to accept it as being a kitchen šŸ˜…

What are your turn offs when you are house or apartment hunting?

  • Personally hope more people are as particular as you so I can get a place easier haha

I was thinking the same thing. If these are the worst OP has seen, they’ve been very very sheltered. I’ve viewed places which I’m pretty sure were still crimes scenes at worst or active drug dens at best for €350k price tag 🤣

I have viewed one or two that I am sure were used for filming blue movies way back when šŸ˜…

All the places with only a downstairs toilet you can have, competition free from me šŸ˜‚

You could do a small en-suite upstairs if room allows. You’ve got to compromise unfortunately

Absolutely. The only two on the list that would really stop me are 1. and 2. I have a really overactive bladder, so I would be up and down the stairs like a yo-yo. Would defo not mind a smaller bedroom for the sake of an en-suite. It’s just the cost that would be concerning for me as I wouldn’t have the money to do it for a few years after buying.

Just use a chamber pot until money allows :)

Try pushing out a child or 3 through your japs eye. Women have weak pelvic floors and it gets worse for us. We tend to get on with things and don't even consider these things when looking for a house. Grow a pair.

Seem to have hit a nerve - I hope you get your ideal bathroom some day too

Hahah that ole chestnut! I don't need an ideal bathroom as I have one already. Best of luck with your ridiculous requests though.

You must have missed this part in my original post - ā€œHave a few turn offs when I am looking - obviously, these are totally subjective (and in no order) and you might think things I like are awful so there is no shade intendedā€¦ā€

You seem peculiarly outraged about a stranger’s subjective housing turn offs. Enjoy your ideal bathroom, I guess šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

Good luck, you absolute gobshite hahaha

    šŸ‘‹šŸ»šŸš½šŸ›

Exactly - if more people were this pedantic at keeping their houses, there'd be more very decent places for sale out there!

  • Only real turn offs are things that can’t be changed down the line.

No off street parking would definitely be one for me

Yeah, the parking is important. You hear too many stories of neighbours falling out over street parking, and people sticking traffic cones on the road etc… Would be stressful

  • Try to see past aesthetic choices that you don't like - you can paint over the grey, and get second hand kitchen cabinets to hang on the walls!Ā

I do! It’s really only 1. & 2. that would outright stop me from buying a place. Moving around bathrooms would be expensive, and not something I could afford for a while!

Even then, you can extend, plumb and tile to your heart's content! Area, size and orientation of the plot are things that I'd be more concerned about. Or drainage, slope, sunlight, proximity to XYZ. Most of your list can be eliminated with some money, determination and patience.

My Mum jokes that if I ever got a three bedroomed house, I would turn the third bedroom into a bathroom šŸ˜† And she is probably right! New bathrooms just seem so expensive though, and I feel like I will have feck all money for a few years after buying.

  • Our house has both the glass panels on the stairs and the large cream floor tiles, just in the ground floor entrance hallway and the kitchen, but I agree, not a big fan of the tiles. I quite like the glass panels though? But very much a personal taste thing. I will say, having bought our house a couple years ago primarily based on location, we’re not in love with the actual house itself as much, it’s amazing what a lick of paint and changing fixtures and fittings can do without having to spend a fortune. Eg our kitchen was cream high gloss, grand but very dated, and we got the cabinets stripped, sanded and painted in farrow and ball railings, and made a huge difference. Lights too can always be changed, we had a steel monstrosity in the hallway which we replaced straight away. Wishing you the best of luck with your house hunting journey šŸ™

Thanks ā˜ŗļø Love the sound of what you did the kitchen! Could I ask what the cost was to do that? If you don’t mind sharing of course

No of course, happy to share. We painted the whole internal house as part of the same job so I can’t price the kitchen specifically. From memory it was 5k for everything, but that was 3 floors, 2 main rooms on each floor plus the hallways and landing, we painted the stairs themselves, doors and skirting as well. To add, the house was built in 2005 and was very pine-centric so we painted a lot of stuff white. If you’re in Dublin I can PM you the name of our painting crew, I’ve used them about3 or 4 times so far, great quality and decent budget wise.

Wow, that actually seems fairly decent! I am actually looking at moving outside Dublin (I am from down the country originally) to get a bit more bang for my buck. Will miss Dublin, but the prices are ludicrous now šŸ˜•

It was about 3 years ago so I’d say prices might have gone up since then. It’s shocking how much everything has skyrocketed. There’s definitely more bang for your buck outside Dublin, hope you find the place of your dreams (and make it your dream home if it’s not quite there) šŸ™

    Thanks a million ā˜ŗļø

  • I'll take those tiles over carpet any day. I'll take anything over fucking carpet any day.

    Allergies? Hoovering? Or just aesthetics?

Yes to all. And no need for proffessional deep cleaning.
Carpets belong in the dustbin of history, along with not building decent insulation.

Fair enough. They are a huge pain to clean alright

  • Is this single bathroom unit becoming the norm or what? Glenveagh development at Grenville Mullingar, was told by a friend subbed in that some of the places only had the one bathroom under the stairs, nothing upstairs at all. I find it hard to believe and would appreciate if someone could confirm or deny that?

  • Was house hunting this time last year. Walked into the living room on the open viewing, saw the swirly Artex ceiling and just straight up went ā€œnopeā€.

Went sale agreed a month later.

If it can be changed, it’s not a deal breaker.

Had to look that ceiling up, and… it’s interesting….

  • Lol the toilet situation is so real, especially in Irish houses where they stick the only loo in some weird extension at the back like it's an afterthought - nothing worse than having to trek through the entire house at 3am when you're bursting

Lived in a house that had a toilet in a freezing extension on the ground floor: you had go down the stairs, go through the kitchen into a hallway (that was freezing even during the heatwave) and at the back of that hallway was the toilet. You pretty much needed to wear your outside shoes to get there lol. Showers were in the bedrooms. Not gonna lie, most of the time I was pissing in the shower and I’m a woman (I was a teenager at that time). Thankfully we only lived there for a few months, it was dreadful.

Do you mean like the shower was literally in the bedroom? I saw one like that on daft where you would step out straight onto the bedroom carpet, don't understand how it doesn't destroy the room with the steam

Yep, and yes you would step directly onto the bedroom carpet. Mine was in a niche / recess in my bedroom so you could hide it if you wanted to. My parent’s room had a tiled area + sink. It was a bizarre house lol

It was an afterthought. Ā Some of these - especially ex council - did not actually have indoor plumbing when they were builtĀ

Yep, my mother grew up in one of these, most had the outhouse knocked and an indoor toilet installed but they're still there in places, often used as woodsheds

My Nana had an outhouse toilet in the garden, by the time I arrived they had done another one inside but still kept the one outside. I remember using it a few times in winter when I was small and the legs nearly being whipped off me with the cold šŸ˜‚

It’s such bad planning imo, other countries seem to be better at bathrooms. It would also be horrible to be so far away from the toilet if you were sick etc… And I would be worried if I had kids that they would fall down the stairs during the night if they needed the loo. It’s crazy to me.

  • A lot of those issues are cosmetic and quick fixes. You're ruling out a big chunk of the market.

I dont think any of those would be dealbreakers for me. Maybe the bathroom one, depending on how hard or expensive it would be to put a second bathroom in.

The only absolute dealbreaker is the sole bathroom being downstairs. If it was upstairs, I would be fine. I just know I would be up and down to it all night at the best of times - and also I don’t fancy being sick and having to go up and downstairs. If I had a better bladder, I might not be so bothered….

Tbf, the main deal breaker for me would also be the location of the bathroom. I hate when they're off a kitchen. If you can't even piss in peace in your own home then its a solid no.

The only bathroom being downstairs and off a kitchen is just too impractical. I think there is some planning thing now about where you can have a bathroom downstairs, so I think it won’t be a problem for newer houses anyway.

I've always lived in bungalows and honestly I found it very odd when I realised some houses have no bathrooms downstairs. It's funny, but I'm like.... so if I'm in the sitting room, I have to climb the stairs and walk down the hall to use the bathroom? Seems very far away!

I guess a lot of it is what you’re used to! I can see how the upstairs toilet would seem far away šŸ˜‚

  • A no no for me would be a house on a busy road, a quite cul de sac is ideal.Ā

A house next to a school or college like my last house. (Traffic was insane and students parking cars everywhere, blocking driveways etc).Ā

I agree with the house near school one, and include regular schools and creches. Parents parking everywhere in the mornings and afternoons would be irritating.

I used to know someone who lived on the Navan Road in Dublin, in a house right on the road at one of its busiest parts. Nice house, but couldn’t be living that close to a busy road!

Yeah I couldn't think of anything worseĀ

  • So many of these are so easy to change you should try see past them. Ā 1/2 tho are giving me visceral memories of every single house i viewed in d6 and surrounding. Only 1 2 and 7 are structural problems

Yeah I gave up and left Dublin and did a self build and got away with it work wise. Ā  Enormously fortunateĀ

  • The downstairs only toilet was a deal breaker for us bc I've lived in a house like that before and it was such a pain in the hoop!

The house we currently have has a upstairs bathroom but we have yet to move in bc we can't get the bank to lend us enough ones to finish off the necessary renovations 😭😭

Hope it all goes okay for you!

Yeah, the downstairs bathroom just wouldn’t work for me. Canā€˜t imagine only having a downstairs bathroom if you had a small kid and they had a tummy bug or something. I would compromise on other things (size of rooms etc..) to have a bathroom upstairs.

  • The majority of the stuff you mention is stuff you could change if you really wanted to.

  • I agree all of them except this #11. Giant skylights in the kitchen. Why? I think the roof window in the kitchen is very nice. Brings natural light.

It’s just the giant ones I am not a fan of!

The bigger the window the more light. It's the only thing on your list that's weird. They are essential in most kitchen extensions. I'd be way more alarmed by dingy inner rooms with no natural light

You'd surely have to clean them though? Would that not be difficult.

I've never had any dealings with skylights, but I know the attic style windows get covered in moss and leaves and stuff.

A nice new skylight sounds nice, a big dingy one, not so much.

  • We just moved into our dream house fixer upper in Raheny last week. 3 stories but there's only one toilet on the second floor šŸ˜… plan is to make the attic ensuite in a few years and over time extend the extension downstairs that will fit a bathroom

You can change the house, but you cannot change the location. Raheny is absolutely fantastic. We rented there for many years. We'd both rented separately in places like Lucan, Monkstown, Finglas, IFSC, Clonskeagh before we became a couple.

Raheny topped all of them for both of us. Maybe a bit of loving couple bias with that. The transport is probably the best in the city though. Dart, on all the H bus routes, cycle lanes into town. Amazing bakery. A walk or drive to the beach. Huge sense of community. So many clubs and societies there. Some lovely local pubs as well. St Anne's of course.

    You genuinely nailed it.

    Well done folks!

Thank you, we've been living here for 3 years renting, I'm local enough and our kids are in an amazing tiny school in the area so it was never a question for us. We hit the jackpot with this house too, overbid the other person by 1k and I would have kept going to be honest!

Congrats šŸ‘šŸ» I would defo be the same re doing the en-suite!

Is the 3rd story the attic?

  • Surely you can recognise that you'll most likely change the kitchen and flooring in time as well as changing spotlights out for regular fixtures. You are allowed to decorate the house you buy to your own taste eventually 😜  That being said TV over the fireplaceĀ

Ah, they are turn offs as opposed to never evers - except for 1. & 2. which are never evers for me šŸ˜¬ā€¦.

  • Garden full of concrete or paving. What's the fucking point of having a garden if you're going to make it look like a prison yard!! Wouldn't be a deal-breaker as I'd much prefer a reasonably-sized garden that I have to do work on to bring up to scratch to a postcard-sized garden or no garden, but it does my head in

Some of them are a bit dystopian alright!

  • Good luck in this mkt šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

I saw an apartment a few months ago with 2 bedrooms and three bathrooms - living my bathroom dream šŸ˜†

Did you put in an offer.?

It was outside my budget in the end, all those bathrooms came at a premium unfortunately!

You can't put a price on a good shit!

  • You know you can change colours, flooring, lights etc?

    They aren’t dealbreakers tbf

  • I get your train of thought on most, but what's the issue with the skylights in 11?

I just find the giant ones are a bit industrial looking - totally personal preference though, and if I liked a house it wouldn’t put me off. It’s just a turn off, not a deal breaker

  • You're making me feel even worse about my grey flooring! It was brand new when we moved in last July and I couldn't justify ripping it all up again, even though I hate it... I'm so grateful we found a house with an upstairs bathroom in D3 - after we looked at so many where they were in an extension out the back, I didn't think it was going to happen. That was one thing I really needed. That and off-street parking.

Congrats on the upstairs bathroom 🄳 Like hen’s teeth in some parts of Dublin!

  • Barking or yapping shitting machines in gardens of neighbouring properties, 100% a no for me

You could move into a house with no dog within a kilometre, and the next day your next door neighbour on the attached side buys two Cockalabrapoochons. It’s one thing having deal breakers regarding the property itself. It’s quite another thinking you have any control of what goes on outside it.

  • Bait. ā€œOh we’ll end up in shed as the tiles were too busy.ā€

  • Remax, shower of rat bastards

  • Lol sounds like you're viewing fancier houses than I am!

Not really! It’s not the one bathroom thats the problem, it’s when it’s downstairs.

Nah its moreso the glass banisters and the kitchen descriptions. I'm lucky if the places I'm viewing have kitchens half the time.

Weirdly, the kitchen is a room I am very open to compromise on. Would even have a stand up galley style kitchen no bother

I am not particularly fussy on kitchens either, but they are a key part of the home for some people, so I've been finding it odd how many are shoved in a corner or a glorified hallway like an afterthought.

You'd think most houses are generally house shaped, but looking at whats for sale, its kind of hilarious how many aren't. Some look like people built them in sims, the rooms are so oddly shaped.

Which reminds me of another turn off - weird shaped rooms! Rooms that have curved walls or weird angles. I like an aul square or rectangular room šŸ˜†

I enjoy looking at fancy houses on daft for this reason! I always find it funny that a room was clearly built with something specific in mind, but the current owners don't know what, so they kind of just stick a random bed there or something.

I saw a massive bathroom in one house. It was surely intended to be able to fit a jacuzzi tub or something, but instead it just had standard bathroom stuff, just really far apart šŸ˜‚

  • Agree on those big kitchen floor tiles. Especially the shiny ones, I’d be constantly polishing them

I lived in Spain for a while, and they are very popular there because they keep everything nice and cool. Definitely require a good bit of cleaning though in my experience!

  • My approach was led by "what is adaptable easily" vs actual deal breakers.

Like, I wouldn't fancy adding an upstairs toilet, so if I needed that, the house that doesn't have it is out. Kitchen fronts, spots, wall colour? Not even a thought, that's two weekends at the hardware store and a bit of swearing.

I don't think your approach will lead to finding a home if everything on this list would be an actual deal breaker.

  • [deleted]

ā€œā€¦ these are totally subjective (and in no order) and you might think things I like are awful so there is no shade intended!ā€

    šŸ™‚

    [deleted]

They called them turn offs. They didn't say that having tiles meant they'd automatically not consder the house. Its clearly meant to be a fun post about weird house decorating choices.

  • If you are desperate for a house and are this picky then good luck to you

  • darling when you can buy your own home you can be judgemental. As you can't, fuck off

I bought my home at 22. we have one bathroom. We can still look down on you

Are you always so angry šŸ˜‚

I'm not angry.. What a strange response
