I don’t live in Ireland anymore and would like to sell my car on done deal or through the friends’ network, etc. Unfortunately, a guy at the Tralee NCT center failed it, and I had to return home before the work could be completed by the mechanic.

So, 650 EUR later, I have a car that is supposed to have addressed those issues, but I’m not there to take it in. I guess have have two questions:

Can someone legally take it to the testing center in my stead, and/or

What are my chances of selling this thing with no NCT? Maybe I should just schedule another trip back before sitting in the Kerry winter gives the car another reason to fail.

Thanks for your consideration.

  • Get someone else to bring on your behalf to NCT. I've done this for friends and you'll get better money with valid NCT

Oh, brilliant - when they asked for my ID at the NCT, I thought it was to identify me as the owner. That’s really helpful, thanks!

No, they just need it to have proof who brought it and tell them to keep the receipt. I brought my missus car a few times also, but they call the owner's name, so when I walk up to collect the keys they double check, that's all.

  • Yes

How would one go about it, do you think? Invite the buyer to take it to a local mechanic for an assessment before buying? I suppose that’s a pretty common thing to do, anyway.

That’s entirely up to the buyer to propose, most won’t bother they’ll just come view it and drive it.

But you’re much better off getting an NCT on it if you want to get what the cars worth, otherwise people will be turned off or you’ll have to lower the price by a few hundred quid

You don't need to do that, just tell them it has no NCT.

  • You can have someone do it for you, yeah.

You are also allowed to sell a car without valid NCT. NCT does not determine if it’s sellable, only if it’s drivable. The buyer wouldn’t actually be allowed to drive it though, unless it’s taken to the testing centre.

  • My Das mechanic would take his in for him.

  • Anyone with a license or log book can take it to nct

  • Yes you can but you will sell for less than a car with an NCT

  • If it doesn’t have an NCT when you are selling it you will be low balled. If it has a 12 month NCT nothing safety wise can be criticised. You will sell much quicker with an NCT otherwise you will be waiting for someone who buys car does them up and gets an NCT on it before selling for a profit.

  • Without an NCT, you'll be offered €1000-€5000 less than what you're selling it for, or you just won't sell it.

Personally, I'd never buy a car that has an expired NCT, as I'd be on the hook for whatever failed the last NCT.

  • I take my wife's car in all the time and never get asked for ID
