I'm unemployed and homeless, spend my current supplementary welfare on hostel living (based in Cork County) and food.
I have signed on as homeless, but yeah. I'm one of many, so i'm not expecting anything soon.
A sparkle in the darkness is that i may soon have a job. Fulltime. But it's minimum wage.
My question is, can i get some sort of financial assistance still, even though i have a job, seeing it would be minimum wage?
Whenever i call Intreo or whatever, they scream my ear off when they hear i may possibly get a job that my support is over. I don't even get to tell them the entire situation.
"Oh. You found a job. Great.. We will cancel your supplementary welfare so..."
I'm single, no kids etc.
I will take the job, but. I'm just asking if there's any supplementary assistance?
Apologies if this boils anyones blood. But i've been homeless and jobless since June.
I understand if it may come off in bad taste.
That is not my intent.
Until you have a job and have signed on the dotted line dont tell them nothing! 'May' have a job is not the same as having a job.
Wishing you all the best đ
Dude. Ignore anyone giving you shit. Youâve kept your head down. Youâve kept going. And youâre making things better for yourself.
I canât answer your Q. But I just wanted to say kudos for keeping at it đȘ
This . You lost your job and your gaff in quick succession. You would have been paying into the system before that happened. This is what social welfare is supposed to be used for. Best of luck to you OP.
Agreed, it 'boils my blood' that someone who has previously worked and will soon be working full time again will struggle with homelessness and rent. Get on to the council to see what type of assistance you can qualify for in terms of housing and best of luck to you! đđ»
Agreed, you're doing great OP. Head down, keep going đȘ
Talk to Citizens Information, theyâll probably know best if there are any in work supports available.
And Iâll be keeping my fingers crossed for you and that job!
This is your best option. Citizen information can and will give you advice. I'm pretty sure intreo employees arent allowed/don't give you instructions on what you can claim, they just want you off the system even if you're then entitled to something else.
You can get on the housing list. Get HAP if you can to cover some of your rent. Youâre doing great; good job on your accomplishments and getting a job.
Instead of âŹ250 or so a week youâll be getting âŹ490 a week after tax and thatâs if you only work 39 hrs a week for 10 ish months of the year (since youâll get bank hols weekends and annual leave)
You could get a raise soon enough or work another part time job. Pick something easy, it beats siting in the hostel all day. Esp pick a job with benefits like free food.
Wow, if you only work 39hours a week? And another part time job? Are you stupid? Like I can't tell if your are joking or not.
If I was homeless, young, didnât have kids in my custody Iâd work 50 hrs a week yeah. Itâs a temporary way to increase savings while still avoiding lounging in a hostel. Sorry that seems like a joke to you. I literally pulled 80 hour weeks when I worked in neurosurgery. Iâm a doctor so I donât know why that seems stupid to you. When I was younger working in retail I once had two jobs because it was necessary to achieve my goal.
To be fair, an 80 hour week as a neurosurgeon is not paid the same as an 80 hour week as a minimum wage worker.
Not saying you have it easy but it is a very different struggle, with very different contexts and circumstances.
Added to that, most jobs legally canât employ workers for 80 hour weeks and most minimum wage paying employers are not minded to give very much advance scheduling, making double jobbing an impossibility in most cases.
âWhy canât you be just like meâ isnât a realistic position to take. You know that. Youâre smart.
I wasnât always in medicine I didnât start the degree until I was 31. I had two jobs in retail before because I had literally no one to support me if anything happened. New country etc
You wouldnât qualify for any social welfare payments. Jobseekers can pay something if you are working parttime but since you will be working full time you wonât qualify. Supplementary welfare is only a bridge payment until your main social welfare claim is decided.
You may qualify for some support- in the meantime get on the housing list to qualify for homeless hap and check if the civil service are doing any open recruitment for CO positions. When you say supplementary welfare do you mean Supplementary Welare Allowance or just your leftover dole? You should qualify for full Jobseekers Allowance, plus exceptional needs payments for anything essential you may need help for, I.e. New clothes for work, a bike for transport, a monthly train ticket. Very best of luck- get into the citizens information ASAP to understand your options.
Sorry.
Yes. SWA.
I'm not Irish, and my passport expired. So i've appealed for my JPRB over and over.
Apologies for the tangent...but:
Before anyone reading this with pitchforks at the ready. Hold yer horses people.
I'm nordic, but i can't travel home, live and get roof over my head to renew the passport, return and live on âŹ252 per week.
Yes. My country has a shiny embassy in Dublin.
No. My country does not offer proper passports in the shiny embassy.
Sorry for the snarkyness. But yes. I have had to regurgitate this everytime i go to Intreo.
"Why don't you move back home to your country?"
Well.. I'm here. I'd be homeless there as well. And i may have a bigger chance here to succeed.
And sorry for unloading while replying on your post /u/PlatypusNo9083.
(I got carried away. :/)
You may receive rent allowance depending on your income. There's a benefit of work calculator also. When you start working get onto the community welfare officer and they will give you a payment until your wages come in - you dont have to pay this back but youd have to pay the dole back if you continued to claim it when working. Is it work over 5 days?? If not you might be able to get x's and o's?
It would be 37h/w office job.
Well done đđ»đđ»
Check out the citizens information website, It's pretty helpful. https://share.google/28uflDgh8OMpjnGG2
Better still, make an appointment to speak with someone at one of their offices throughout Cork city and county.
https://centres.citizensinformation.ie/county.php?county=cork
Just checking did you sign up on your local county council for housing list?
Do you currently hold medical or GP card?
Also once you start work you should be entitled to HAP:
https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/housing/renting-a-home/help-with-renting/housing-assistance-payment/
Apart from that when it comes to getting money together for a deposit for your rental you can ask for help through additional needs payment:
https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social-welfare/supplementary-welfare-schemes/additional-needs-payment/
Apart from that get in touch with charities like SVP and Focus Ireland and try get as much info from them as possible. SVP may help financially if there's little bits you need when you first move in like bedding curtains and such.
Best of luck with your new job, it's minimum wage but still a stepping stone so you should be proud of the hard work you've put into getting here. Really hope everything works out for you this year
Yes.
No.
SVP has helped me with Aldi vouchers in the past. But have been closed over the holidays.
So apply for medical card right now as soon as you can, if you're not entitled for medical card they then may give you GP card. It's worth having one and not need it as when you're working if I'm not mistaken they'll let you keep this card for a while which is dead handy.
https://www2.hse.ie/services/schemes-allowances/medical-cards/applying/apply/
If you get sick during your new job to get your statutory sick leave benefit you'll need a doctor's note so this can help with expenses of that as GP appointment is about 50 60 quid for single appointment.
Get a medical card and start the hap application asap. Once you start working aim for a room <650 a month (I've done this on min wage and still saved 9k in a year no harsh budget applied).
Learn your tax credit entitlements. If you're renting and not getting hap make sure you get the rent tax credit. If you have to buy a uniform for work there's an allowance for that as well. It's only small but worth it.
If you've medical expenses keep the receipts and learn what ones you can claim back some of at the end of the year
And finally don't be ashamed or afraid of asking charities for help. A lot of homeless charities also support those struggling with cost of living (food, clothes , fuel). For the first year while transitioning from homeless to renter you'll need as much help as you can get to keep your home stable and get emergency money saved.
And just to add on here I know 650 is considered cheap for a room but you're homeless right now. Take the first suitable single bed you get offered. It's a massive improvement for you in quality and will improve your mental health a lot.
Spam your CV in anywhere you can lad even with this job offer. Once you have one job it's so much easier to get the next. Going from unemployed to employed is the hardest part. If the job falls through go down to the welfare and ask them about courses and stuff you can do. Always work out here for lads with all the certs you need for warehouse work (manual handling, forklift etc)
You should be looked after for someone that is homeless and without a job to taking a job and hoping that your own government will help you but I'm really not sure the government cares about our own and I don't mean that in any bad way towards yourself, I really love to see people that want to better themselves. I did a lot of charity work for the homeless and the government really don't do enough to help the homeless. I wish and pray for you that you'll get the right support you need đ
Get yourself down to the citizens advice office, you may be entitled to support -
Intreo are notorious for harassing people who have a history of recent employment and have paid taxes but ironically enough they never seem to bother people on long term dole whoâve never worked at allâŠ
Intreo staff also do not have the last say or authority to cut your benefits, they are connected to social welfare office but are still a seperate entity - so go speak to someone in citizenâs advice and lay out your situation clearly, they will tell you best what to do.
Respect. Head up man, good luck to you.
Sorry you are in this position. There may be people who are more knowledgeable on the subject, but I don't think so. But if you can't find any information here, go into them and ask. All they can say is no.
Thereâs plenty of money in this country, I wouldnât be telling Intreo anything until you have a bit of cash built up in your bank account.
The only thing available would be HAP. Some welfare offices will help you with clothing for the new job and I would suggest going to charity shops as they should have work wear. I would also suggest getting a second job maybe in a takeaway for a few months so you can save up a deposit to rent a room somewhere. When you get somewhere to live try the free cycle pages for the stuff you need. Congratulations on the job and remember there is other people on fulltime wages living in homeless accommodation so don't feel ashamed.
Your income would be under the limit for potential assistance from HAP even with full time minimum wage work. What would change is the amount of rent you would pay to the council, itâs a percentage of income - 10 or 15 i believe.
Also they wonât just cut you off. You contact them and tell them your first pay date with a letter from the job confirming when you get paid and you can stay on it for up to 30 days or till your wage gets paid.
Best of luck!
There's a social welfare Ireland Facebook page with loads of people who know lots! Also calling citizens information is a good idea, they are independent and just tell you what you might be eligible for. For example hap for housing, medical card, fuel allowance etc. There's a back to work calculator on the social welfare website as well which tells you what benefits you lose if your salary goes above a certain level.
Fair play to you for finding a job, and just really good everything works out for you.
You should qualify for Hap but speak to citizenâs information
Talk to your CWO and see what they say.
Is it possible for you to keep your welfare and work 19.5 hours a week. I believe (might be wrong) that you can do this without affecting benefit. Maybe at least something to look into. You could ask Intereo to put you on TUS or job seekers? The new employer gets the benefit of having you 37.5 hours and you keep benefit. They pay 19.5. Again something Iâm not expert on but worth discussing.
It absolutely affects your benefit. You are given less money. The amount depends on the hours and how much you are earning.
None of that applies here
I did a bit of research. You could do up to 12 hours work and not affect payments.
You sign on âper dayâ x 6 days a week. Any part-day you work, you donât get benefits. So 1x7hr day & 1x5h day = payment for 4 days, but 3x4hrs = payment for 3 days.
And if you work 4+ days, you get no payment at all.
But none of that applies if youâre working fulltime.
TĂșs and CE schemes (where Iâd guess youâre getting the 19.5hrs from) are PT programmes of work - in specific places - for people out of work for several years, as does the long-term-returner scheme (I forget the name of it) which is a sliding reduction in Jobseekers over 3-4 years
No, you won't be entitled to supports if you are working full time.
