Anyone else getting pissed off by these tipping iPads which are basically coercion?

I always tipped previously in restaurants but would never tip barber or counter order etc.

Lately the suggested tips on the iPads are increasing to often 12/15% minimum. I’m thinking now if I see an iPad it’s automatically zero! Min wage is high here and it’s not the US!

  • Not even in the slightest bit. Automatic no tip, zero feelings of guilt at all.

    "You don't believe in it?"

    Mr Pink was right though

  • Just don’t tip. I don’t tip unless I get absolutely fantastic service. So the idea of tipping someone at a counter to the tune of 15% is just hilarious.

  • Tap 0, no regrets.

    While maintaining unflinching eye contact...

That's the way, you show those teenage shop assistants. They've no right to bully you with their tipping, corporate, capitalist agenda. FFS, cop on to yourself.

I see, you're obviously one of those types that can't detect sarcasm without the little "/s"

Well done copping in to yourself. /s

Eh yeah, that's it. You got me. Well done. Collect a badge on the way out, just don't leave a tip though, because that'd be giving in to the system. Bastards, right?

Well you do seem rather worked up over nothing..

Ireland has the 3rd highest in the economic freedom ratings, so do what you want.

Jeez who hurt you? You don't have to have a moan about people having a moan. You don't actually get a badge.

  • I just press 0 and that’s it. I really don’t care if the worker gets mad at missing tips.

  • I press no every time, but I agree that it sours the interaction.

The Japanese famously don't tip. The Continentals are iffy about it as well, and I learnt recently that so even are the Australians. We don't realise how Americanised we have become in handing over an extra 10%+ for service that is rarely better than fine.

The Japanese takeaway it as an insult, their just doing their job!

It’s not seen as insulting, just annoying. The workers aren’t supposed to take extra money and don’t know what to do with it.

  • They can ram that American bullshit right on up the ol pisser hole

    [deleted]

Yes, it is infact american bullshit, people get paid a minimum wage in Ireland and the rest of the western world for work they do like in restaurants etc.

So yes, you can feck off with your American tipping bullshit.

Bet you're the lad who goes on holiday, spends all their time in an Irish bar, then bitches that they didn't get a free drink like everyone else, because he was the only one who 'doesn't believe in this American tipping shite'. But yeah, keep complaining on Reddit!

Why are you so salty that people don't tip?

Oh, we found the tight arse cafe owner who won't properly look after his staff and expects the already overpaying customer to pony up...ffs

Good man, your detective skills are top-notch. Now go shout about how you don't believe in that tipping lark on a few other threads.

Except that it is an American notion....

  • I got a €5 bottle of water at the old D6 Amsterdam - Cork gate last year and it asked for a tip lol.

  • It's worth noting that a lot of modern EPOS systems are vertically integrated so the company that supplies the till/PIN pad etc. are also processing the payments E.G. Sumup, Clover, Square etc.

They take a percentage of all turnover as a fee, so throwing tips into the mix increases the fee they can charge. They supply the equipment with the tipping feature switched on by default and if the restaurant or takeaway switches it off they will be put under pressure to switch it back on.

The guy who runs a coffee shop near me said when he turned off the tipping functionality, almost instantly he started getting notifications in the terminal asking him to turn them back on and when he ignored those the phone calls started coming. They really want you to turn on tipping because a 10% tip equates to a 10% increase in their fee basically.

Aside from your atrocious maths, this is the truth.

What is wrong with my math?

A 10% tip does not increase the charged fee by 10%. Think about it.

So if the transaction total is €10 and the card processing percentage is 1.5%, the fee will be €10 * 1.5% = 0.15c.

If you add 10% tip to the transaction total and bring it to €11, then €11 * 1.5% = 0.165c, which just happens to be 0.15c + 10%.

  • "Tips" should be renamed "sap fee" or "sucker markup" because the only reason tips should exist in ireland or any minimum wage nation is to cater for saps and suckers

It has potential in Ireland due to the Irish fear of looking mean. “Round Dodger” being one of the highest insults you can bestow upon an Irish person.

It should be named “owner greed” they want us to pay our AFTER TAX money on their behalf employees wages. Thats not how it works . We work so hard for our money and we ( most people ) never get or expect any tips .

  • No tipping, ever.

    Tight as fuck

Nope. I have zero need to inflate my ego because a system encourages me to pay someone else's wages for showing up to work. The only person who ever benefits from this system is the business owner. Never the employee, and never the customer.

I've always disliked non-tippers. People who wouldn't even leave a euro behind and then proudly boast about it. It's a sickness

Lol. That genuinely made me laugh. Thanks.

  • No? Just dont tip?

  • This seems to be a very regular post, why not search for similar ones before starting yet another. Just gives the usual moaners a chance to complain about how it's not bleedin' America etc etc etc

Must be weekly at this stage

  • This topic has been posted at least weekly for the last 3 years

  • Remember folks, before you go complaining about the kids working in these shops, it's not them who design the programs on the iPads that ask for tips, so no need to go bashing them, or giving them shite while they work (yes, it happens). If you've a problem with it, don't leave a tip, or sure, just come onto Reddit and complain and get loads more lads to jump in with their; 'I'm not tipping and I'm very proud of myself for that' gobshitery.

  • I've never been handed an iPad in a restaurant in Ireland.

iPads or payment machines with a screen asking for a Tip! It’s happened to me a few times, Dublin area.

You get them in Limerick too. In fairness most baristas or bartenders I’ve dealt with automatically skip the tip part so I can just pay . So they either know it’s ridiculous or they know I’m cheap! 😂

I get you now. Closest thing I experienced is a button on the payment machine screen saying “leave a tip?”, but there was a cancel option too. A blatant, predetermined one like you described would piss me off too.

Happened to me in Belfast yesterday, I panicked and gave 15% - so annoyed at myself for caving to the pressure

What pressure? Did the member of staff tell you to leave a tip? Because I’d complain if that was the case.

    Ooh, you're hard.

I had the head bitten off me about this over Christmas. Apparently the definition of iPad is a screen bigger than a phone, smaller than a laptop. iPads can be made by Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, etc, and I'm ignorant for thinking iPad is a specific product made by Apple.

  • We're not fucking America!

  • Never tip digitally, the chance of that money actually making it to the staff is so slim, it's usually the owner pocketing it themselves.

If I want to give a tip (when the service is very good, and the server is friendly and nice) I'll leave it as cash. Server can pocket it, or split it with other staff.

  • Zero, no to tipping and yank nonsense.

  • It’s not ‘coercion’. You need to look up what that means.

Payment machines with tip options always have the options of ‘No tip’ and “custom tip’ so you can type in 50 cents or however much you want to tip.

Yeah, but then they'd not be able to rush onto Reddit bitching and whining that they're being bullied by the big bad teenagers in the shops.

It’s coercion if it’s asked for before you get service. Eddie rockets have the cheek to ask for a tip at the counter before they make the food.

The coercion part is “tip me or we’ll do a shit job”

I agree that a restaurant asking for a tip before you get your food is bullshit. It’s still not coercion, but it’s bad practice for sure.

  • Stop saying iPad over and over when you mean a touchscreen device of some kind!

My apologise for not specifying the exact device used but I think people get the idea, whether it’s a iPad like device or a pay point with a smart screen etc

When I read the title, I thought someone was going around knocking iPads out of people's hands 😂

I agree but was told I'm ignorant and stupid for holding this belief over Christmas, apparently an iPad is a screen bigger than a phone and smaller than a laptop and the whole extended family agreed and everyone in Ireland knows this, it's just me, and I guess you, the idiots who think iPads are only made by Apple.

But iPads ARE only made by apple

That's the point. It seems that the majority have agreed that iPad now means iPad sized device. The same way the majority say hoover when they mean vacuum cleaner

  • I tap zero, except for my barber who I tip. the haircuts are good and cheap and he's great. The haircuts are way cheaper than my previous barber so even with tip it's still less money so it's a no brainer

  • Well it’s like this. You’re an adult. You are able to say no. The fact of the matter is you don’t want to be seen as a “stingy” person so it annoys you that they ask for a tip and you feel it puts you in a dilemma. Maybe use cash more. No button there 🙃

You DON’T have to tip. They have wages. It’s not the US.

I personally tip my child’s barber because he’s a brilliant barber and my child gets on very will with him. Plus my kids hair is poker straight and I know it’s hard to blend 🙃 I also give him extra at Christmas and my pre teen kid gives him a card. I rarely get anything done myself in general but if I do, I throw a 5er if I’m pleased.

In food places like a finer dining, myself and my partner would do a decent tip if we are happy. We wouldn’t do it all the time because we have noticed the food quality in a lot of places just isn’t worth it anymore.

I like tipping younger people that do a good job so they continue to feel valued in the job they do because working with the public can be a nightmare and they need the money. But I do prefer giving a “direct” tip to them. Tipping is a personal thing. I won’t put myself out of pocket but because I get tips in my own job, I feel it’s nice to give back. To each their own 🙃 Don’t feel bad if you can’t or don’t want to! I never take offence to zero tips because I know how expensive everything is now and the price is the price!

I’d be mortified not to tip hairdresser or barber. Sorry, but that’s cheap to me.

Why? If you like their service and want to show appreciation for that, is that not a good way to do it?

Read it again. I tip. I think it’s weird for you to go to a barber repeatedly and not tip him. You’re going back cos you like the service, he’s done a good job, so why not tip? OP says he doesn’t. Just weird to me. Taxis, nail girl, whatever service it is, if its good, I tip.

    My apologies!

No worries, it’s early! But will be downvoted anyway for showing appreciation lol

  • Being shown a screen that gives options for tip amounts is hardly coercion.

It is if it’s before service! Aka tip me or else…

Or what? Do you react this badly to Netflix and YouTube suggestions?

That has no relevance to the topic! Please read

It’s a suggested amount. You are free to simply not pay it? Cop on to yourself.

Netflix is not coercing you to pick something! Putting social pressure on you! Wake up!

What social pressure? Just select ‘skip’ or 0 or whatever. What are the negative consequences of not giving a tip?
