American Anti-German and Anti-Japanese sentiment throughout the Second World War is very well documented. There are propaganda posters, there were internment laws, the entire German and Japanese cultures as a whole were viewed with suspicion. What about Italy? It seems that, despite being one of the big 3, they were largely ignored.

  • Buddy, there was anti-Italian sentiment long before WWII

But, to actually answer your question, yes there was. There was propaganda, surveillance, and 600k Italian-Americans were declared enemy aliens which led to a ton of arrests

Italians weren't considered white until the 2000s

  • A little, but not a massive amount. There were about 1800 people that were interned. Which is nothing compared to what Japanese Americans went through. And keep in mind that the mafia was working with US intelligence to undermine Axis activities in Italy.

But the main effect that the war had was for the languages to be ditched, and this went for German Americans also, many of whom had learned German as a first language. English had not really become solidified as the national language until WW1, and then this was completed by WW2.

WW2 was also the first war where large numbers of Italian Americans fought purely as Americans.

At the peak of Italian immigration to the usa 1880 1014 almost all immigranta came from the south and were illiterate peasants who spoke nothing but their local dialect who is very different than standard italian. Italian american never lost the italian language because they never spoke it in the first place.

You’re right. So my family and Italian American community are all from the north, like most west coast Italians. The ones here spoke Italian (and the interning afaik was mostly done here).

  • Italian didn't need WW to make themselves hated. They were hated for crimes and gang long before that
