Seems like Weiss was correct in spiking it. The producer of this segment has been caught lying and being deceptive before and did the same here.
It's nice seeing everyone associated with 60 Minutes get their come uppance. Long overdue.
How did they lie? They have citations and use public data. Make a claim or im calling shenanigans on your claim of them lying
The piece whined about officials not responding for comment when in fact they did.
It wasnt whinnying they asked for it and that was response they got. Please cite that as incorrect to this reporting
Where can I read their responses?
In 60 minutes they claimed that US government referred them to El Salvador. They then claimed El Salvador didn't respond.
Right, but that’s not quite what I asked.
At any rate, I don’t see how that justifies postponing the story. To me the strongest argument for that (if true) is that the story didn’t add much/anything to what was already covered by other networks.
The theory I guess is they want an official response responding to allegations from the government before airing. The problem of course is this would give the government a pocket veto for any story they don't like.

Not sure if this is their entire response, but its at least allegedly a part of it... And it has nothing to do with the question they were asked.
This is the comment the Whitehouse gave to their request:
Why would they include a response that had absolutely nothing to do with the question they asked? Do you think maybe they did that on purpose knowing thst CBS wouldn't include it so that they can then claime "fake news!!!!!"?

Respectfully, that does not seem like a trustworthy source. I've never heard of that website and the title sounds very partisan and emotional. Do you have a more mainstream news source?
You know it linked to on the record quotes from Dems too right
https://www.cnn.com/2021/04/05/media/60-minutes-gov-ron-desantis-publix
Where’s the lie?
DeSantis did receive hundreds of thousands in donations from Publix, and weeks later, Publix did get first dibs at distribution for the COVID vaccine. Exactly what these two facts imply is up for debate, but 60 Minutes never explicitly claimed there was a pay-for-play scheme, just that it looked like there could be one. So where is the lie?
[removed]
Your base point is mostly correct. Sharyn Alfonsi did a 60 Minutes segment in 2021 about Publix and COVID vaccines that was widely criticized for selective editing and a misleading implication. That is not great reporting, and it is fair to criticize it. What is not correct is the claim, pushed by the Free Beacon, which Ad Fontes rates as a hyper-partisan right outlet with low reliability, that she was “caught lying” or produced an “intentionally false hit piece.” There is no evidence she knowingly fabricated anything. The criticism at the time, including from Democrats, was about poor framing and missing context, not proven deception.
You are also treating one flawed segment in roughly a decade at 60 Minutes as a reason to dismiss anything she touches now. That is not really how credibility works. Criticize bad reporting where it exists, but turning a disputed 2021 segment into proof of intentional dishonesty, or a lifetime disqualification, is not a legitimate argument for pulling the CECOT piece. This justification simply does not hold up. By that logic, Fox News would be completely illegitimate and should not exist, given that it knowingly lied to its audience for an extended period and had to pay 787 million dollars as a result. Using the principal of Occam's razor the most likely reason the piece was pulled is because it was unflattering to the Trump administration.
There are more examples from that specific reporter, it's not a one off. I intentionally left that out because I knew everyone would jump to her defense.
Also, does anyone know the history of 60 Minutes?
If there are “more examples,” then point to them. Vague claims don’t establish a pattern. And it’s hard to take concerns about the integrity of 60 Minutes seriously when the Free Beacon article you cited relies on spin and misrepresents what actually happened with the Publix COVID story.

So, someone is gonna be getting sued, right? For faking videos of CECOT? I'm guessing they used AI to make fake videos of Noem at CECOT, because Noem shows up in those videos.
It wasn't about faking videos
Ah, so the videos are all legit.
Legitimacy of videos wasn't the issue
I just wanna see the truth ... the videos can show us that. Words can lie, but your eyes can see the truth.

People can say anything. Criminal Illegal aliens deported and then asked about their experience is going to give an exaggerated and biased answer. What are we expecting them to say? “It was great, we were treated like royalty!”?
Is there any video of beatings or other abuses? Are there whistle blowers on the side of the Trump administration saying yes these abuses happened? Or is just the same biased human rights advocates that think Hamas is 100% in the right all the time.
The prison warden admits to it and its been verified with the influencers. At a minimum leaving the lights on 24 hours a day like that is torture as it doesn't let the inmates sleep properly. There have been other NGOs and even previous administration saying there are inhumane conditions in this facility.
You are also ignoring the bigger problem. If the allegations of physical and sexual abuse are true then we as the US government and citizens share responsibility for it. Our government is the one paying to send non El Salvadorian nationals to this facility. At a minimum we need to have our own people there to oversee conditions if we are sending people to be imprisoned there on our behalf.
This is much worse then being detained in the US as we have standards we expect the government to follow and people who are detained have recourse available via US courts if basic standards are not being upheld. The US government should not be able to say this "one weird trick" way out of human rights
Be honest, would you actually care? Even if there was a whistleblower corroborating exactly what they say, even if there was video of the beatings, would you change your tune and admit that liberals were right and what the Trump admin has been doing is wrong?
If they are rapists and human traffickers, likely not tbh. If they are just people here illegally that hadn’t committed crimes here in the US before they were deported, and I saw credible actual evidence other than taking some former tren de arugua gang members at “their word” then yea, I would care.
It's a justice system, not a revenge system.
The first person they interviewed only came into the US for his asylum appointment, at which point he was deported to the prison.
It sounds like you're saying "guilty until proven innocent", which IIUC is not what this country was founded on. You have to prove guilt.
If not, then the gov could say you were here illegally and arrest you immediately right?
They are already “guilty” of being here illegally. Again, I can’t go to Italy or Spain, or Timbuktu and overstay my Visa, or never get one to begin with and just….stay forever because I want to.
do you understand what an asylum appointment is

you also won't end up tortured in a concentration camp for it. Do you not see their humanity at all, despite them breaking some civil code?
Sure I see their humanity. I’m also not responsible for everyone else in the entire world. I don’t feel I owe people I’ve never met who chose to come here illegally free and unadulterated access to me, my family and fellow citizens safety and wellbeing.
By that logic you'd support deporting US citizens to some foreign gulag too(like Trump wants btw). Because they stole or whatever else. "I dont see why thieves should get acces to me, my family, etc" works just as well. Or death sentences for drugs like Malaysia, cutting off limbs for stealing etc. Just rational, sane stuff. Because why the hell not, if one takes your argument seriously? If for crossing illegally the punishment is torture and lifetime imprisonment, or even for being in a gang, why not exactly for stealing, for murder, for tax evasion etc. In the past the penitentiary didnt exist. Prisons were just the intermediary step to death, because all sentences were really death sentences, corporal punishment and yes, EXILE.
this is a confusing response. Who is asking you to do that? Your quality of life is higher because of the exploitation of undocumented workers here. Why are you acting like they're some burden?
Disregarding for the moment the fact that only a small fraction of the people deported to CECOT had a violent criminal record and the minority had a record of any kind:
Do you believe that the 8th Amendment doesn't matter, or that it doesn't hold force for cruel and unusual punishment, as long as that punishment takes place outside our borders? The Supreme Court has affirmed that constiutitional rights (like Due Process, which is also an issue in this case) apply to ALL people in the United States, not just citizens; so do you think that someone can get caught for something in the US and then shipped elsewhere and we can just absolve ourselves of whatever cruel and unusual punishment takes place?
They weren't here illegally if they had an asylum appointment.
how do you know they're guilty of being here illegally?
Per the segment, at least one guy was just told “you have tattoos, clearly you’re TdA,” he was jailed here, then deported to CECOT.
Is that enough for you?
Where his tattoos tren da Argua? They said the Marilyn dad was an upstanding citizen who had never harmed another human and turns out he’s a wife beater and human trafficker. So I’ll wait on jumping to conclusions on this one.
Still pretending it was illegal or like that would justify what our so-called "Great" country did to them. Anything to brush over and excuse the inhumanity required to subject another human being to torture for the heinous crime of not being white. Anything to defend the child rapist you put into power to cover up his crimes.
Conservatives are objectively pure fucking evil.
Is the Trump admin calling them "rapists and human traffickers" all that has to happen for you to believe it?
Do you believe the boats that this admin have blown up were drug smugglers?
Has Trump poisoned the brains of people with this “rapists and human traffickers” and “gang members” rhetoric?
The vast vast VAST majority of these people we’re talking about are not “rapists” or “human traffickers” or “gang members” in any way. Illegal immigrants are statistically LESS likely than U.S born citizens to be arrested for violent crimes, including rape and homicide.
Trump and conservatives spew hatred like that in order to justify treating people like shit.

What evidence are you looking for? How does someone prove to you they’re not in a gang and not a criminal when they don’t even have a criminal record?
The Trump Administration is still publicly saying Abrego Garcia is a criminal and gang member but failed to provide any proof whatsoever when a judge demanded it in a court of law. That’s why he’s walking free right now. The judge said they couldn’t hold him if they’re not going to actually present any evidence for their charges.
Even if you don’t believe them, it’s telling that the White House did not even attempt to dispute what any of the men said. Also THE CECOT WARDEN himself was boasting about having lights on 24/7 and the brutal temperatures. Kristi Noem intentionally filmed her disgusting social media video not in front of the people they actually deported but El Salvadoran gang members with the intent of decieving people into thinking these were the types of people they were deporting.
Also that’s just one part of the segment. It’s damning that according to federal databases and international databases and ICE’s own records these men were not the violent rapists the Trump administration claimed they were. It’s been verified that they did not have criminal records. How is that okay?
Does having broken immigration law make them a liar about everything else, or is it that you would just prefer to believe they’re lying?
Having done something objectionable doesn’t mean it’s okay that they were treated inhumanely in prison.
Lol why are we talking about Palestine now?
Address the claims made based on the evidence instead of throwing everyone you disagree with or dislike into the same blender. If you think of everyone who complains about human rights abuses as “biased people who want to hug and kiss Hamas” when Israel-Palestine isn’t brought up, that makes it easier to dismiss everything they say when they criticize your guy’s policies and you don’t feel like reflecting on it.
Ok sure, but can you, or anyone for that matter, prove that these claims are true other than “just trust us bro?”. They may be true, if I see video or have some whistle blowers but just trusting an untrustworthy reporter from a heavily biased left wing news show that has come under fire for being biased in the past, no, I’m not just taking it as fact.
Would it shock you if people were being abused there?
I think you are using motivated reasoning. I don’t think you would be as skeptical of something that cast aspersions on your political opponents. Deny it all you want, but I bet I’m right. You yourself are surely more biased than you probably think you are.
No, this segment does not have all the answers and there’s still lots of questions. That’s what investigative journalism is often like. This should at least raise legitimate concerns and hopefully leads to more investigations and whistleblowing and all that good stuff you claim you trust. How much will be enough? Do we have to wait for someone to be beaten or starved to death?
In what world is 60 Minutes “left wing”, anyway? Sure, it’s to the left of you, but you’re clearly not in the centre. Watch an episode of Democracy Now or something from Jacobin and get back to me.
El Salvador is very proud of what they're doing there. They promote the fact that this jail tortures it's prisoners. They see it as a feature not a bug. The knowledge that people were being abused in this prison isn't some secret. El Salvador is very proud and very vocal about the state of the prison.
This is like when Hamas raped those people on Oct 7th and people were like, "can you prove they were raped?" while Hamas was simultaneously filming and celebrating the raping.
You could just attempt to corroborate some of their claims with the publicly available data they cite - data literally from ICE. Knowing > believing.
No one thinks of Hamas is right 100% of the time. Being for Palestinians does not mean you are advocating for Hamas.
Why are we sending people without criminal records to a third country and paying them to hold them in a prison that the U.S. government recently referenced as a human rights issue?

They're in a Latin American prison - yeah, that's about what I'd expect. They're interviewing prisoners complaining about their treatment - not really interested in gang prisoners' complaints, but ok. They're having a board of leftwing students affiliated with Human Rights Watch, which is about as far left as you can get, criticize it and throw loose words around. Then they try to turn it all on Trump.
Trashy political piece. I'd have pulled it also - it should never have been made. If the DNC wants to fund something like this, at least that would be honest.
Arent we responsible? We are paying for it so in essence every human rights abuse is the US doing it to them

They weren't in a gang, though. And they were released months later and are now free, the first people who have ever been released from that prison in history.
They were in a gang
ICE’s own data contradicts that. Only 3% had criminal records. Furthermore Venezuelan gangs dont do tattoos like Central American gangs
Venezuelan gangs do tattoos though.
Human Rights Watch says that is not the case. They say why. If you believe they are incorrect please provide some source such as an organization that disputes Human Rights watch and their experts. ICE has been cartoonishly inept with tattoos one Venezuelan national they claimed a Real Madrid tattoo was gang related which was not correct https://www.cnn.com/2025/03/26/americas/deported-real-madrid-tattoo-latam-intl
Oh if Human Rights Watch said it then
The guy with the Real Madrid tattoo had much more evidence. It wasn't a tattoo by itself. Dude's social media showed him with gang members lol.

Do you have evidence for this claim?
Even if they truly were gang members, do prisoners not deserve a baseline standard of humane treatment? Or are prisons (esp. in foreign countries) just kind of laboratories where we try out new ways of hurting people?
I watched the segment in its entirety and did not see where the students criticized the decision to send prisoners to CECOT. I did see them cite criminal records from Venezuela and the US to say that only 3% of the Venezuelans incarcerated in CECOT had violent criminal records or criminal convictions that could have lead to violence (maybe that means carrying a concealed weapon illegally?). Could you please tell me the time stamp in the segment that you saw the students criticizing the decision so I can go back and rewatch it?
If you watched the doc, you'd know that the overwhelming majority of the Venezuelans we sent there didn't even HAVE any kind of criminal record. So why should they be put into such conditions?
And even for the actual gang members there, I personally believe that prisoners should not be treated so inhumanely, regardless of their crimes. At the very least they need access to clean water, okay food and a comfortable enough sleeping space. The way they are treating them in there is straight up barbaric, cruel and the system abusing its power IMO which only leads to more and more abuse over time if not checked.

I didn't watch the whole story. I believe the Salvadoran prison is a bad place and Venezuela should accept their own deportees to prevent something like this from happening, which I understand they have started doing since this event.
Also, apparently the story is incomplete. From the WSJ:
"CBS News had sought—and received—responses from the Department of Homeland Security, the White House and the State Department, according to people familiar with the matter. The segment, which was available to some viewers in Canada and seen by the Journal, didn’t include the fresh comments those agencies provided."
https://www.wsj.com/business/media/inside-bari-weisss-decision-to-pull-a-60-minutes-segment-91085279
What does “fresh” even mean? That’s not a legitimate criticism. If there’s error or bias in the story then say so directly, otherwise it sounds like you’re making things up.
It means the comments were provided after the story was "finished".
What am I making up?
Not you you, people who cite “freshness” as a criticism.
I think they were referring to the White House
This was allegedly the comment the Whitehouse house gave:
Why would they include a response in the segment that had absolutely nothing to do with the segment?
Brian Stelter? No bias there, eh?
Do you have any sources saying they said something different?
FYI, NY Post and Fox News are both reporting this as the response the Whitehouse gave to 60 minutes. I dont think theyre going out of their way to push liberal fake news here...
And what does this mean about the current president who gleefully sent people to a torture prison without any due process or constitutional oversight?
Does it matter to you if the president routinely breaks the foundational laws of America?
They didn’t try to deport them to anywhere else. Just to this prison in this country and paid them to take them.
The deportees have all mostly been freed or moved to their home countries or other prisons. So again, this is a brilliant deterrent and the process once deported takes care of itself. A few errors but alas, that’s every form of government in every city and state. Deterrents work and this was the goal all along with the mess that was created, but others wanted other narratives!!
So torture and sexual assault is ok then? Aren't we responsible as we paid to keep them there?
Of course not but your giving even more good reason why our borders should have been closed all along. Because this is the problem all illegal immigration is proving; that nearly all immigration, regardless of crimes committed overseas, and we are forever stuck with everyone regardless . This policy has ruined it for all… just look at the how this mess has hurt genuine asylum seekers and the increase in backlog timelines for people stuck in the legalization process!
Lmao it it didn't take care of itself at all. Your tax dollars are continuing to be spent on this fiasco:
The Supreme Court ruled that there was a violation of due process here. The Trump Administration agreed to return the 200+ former CECOT prisoners to the US if a judge ordered them to, so they can seek due process.
Today, a judge just ordered them to return everyone. What exactly does this deter? What did that solve?
Listening to someone say sincerely “yeah the cruelty is the point and we did it on purpose and we’re happy about it” is like talking with an alien or a demon.
Like… what’s it like to be you? I’m almost fascinated. It’s like we’re truly not from the same plane of existence.
I’m happy that hardened criminals don’t get my sympathy. Sorry if that offends. I’m not happy that soft crimes get any harsh or physical punishment . You are taking everything out of context as if you’re the only one that gives a shit. I give a shit but not for everyone. We in America are far too soft on serious crime in some states, and if you read the news, you would know that!
And if this wasn't true and many of these men had no criminal record, does your assessment change?
If they are not hardened criminals then this would be totally wrong, but anyone with have an ounce of common sense can see and knows they are. I believe the process and validation works, even if we ignore judges giving “free” bail .. Any deported who are not criminals should have a legitimate claim and they and their families given green cards. So where we differ is you believing that they are all mostly softly family loving men, whereas I don’t.
You have no evidence for what you believe
Why? What is the plainly obvious evidence of this?
Multiple journalistic outfits have researched and found the majority of these men had no discernable criminal record.
If you watch the video, they’ll mention that they got stats directly from ice that only 3% of those sent to CECOT had a criminal history. Does that change your mind? I’d recommend watching the actual video if you haven’t.
I’m not taking shit out of context, I’m replying to what you said and how it struck me.
I believe in a baseline standard of humane treatment for all prisoners. Even for rapists and serial killers and war criminals. It doesn’t mean I think what they did is okay, it means we should treat them like human beings while keeping them away from the rest of society. It’s out of principle.
Are you okay with getting tortured by the government if you commit a non violent crime?
No but until you come up with a better solution I am not happy either with having zero deterrents . Which seems to be the lefts plan all along if you add up all they stand for and against! And most ARE violent crime. Sadly WE all risk getting setup in a society with laws, where mistakes are made! I’ll take that risk to save others ..
That has been proven false. Only about 8 people sent to the CECOT torture prison had a criminal record as such
Yeah. Right! And if you believe that stat, I have another bridge to sell you!
Do you mean the one you got from donnie?
I rest my case
So you think 60 Minutes was just making all this up or something?
No, surely not!

It’s almost like if they didn’t enter illegally they wouldn’t put themselves at risk of such. Or if they just self deported they could dodged it too. It’s almost like they made a series of choices that put them in this position that is only a fault of their own.
Sure. I already know you think it’s justified, not going to debate or waste your time trying to change your mind. As I said, just appreciate the honesty.
What if I don’t think they deserved any of that anyway.
Like, for real, I really don’t understand this “lol sucks to suck” mindset when it comes to undocumented immigrants as opposed to… I dunno, people in actual positions of power who abuse it? If you’re just an ordinary Joe you probably have way more in common with José who doesn’t have a green card than you do with some bug-eyed psycho like Stephen Miller.
You’re supposed to be like “lol serves you right, foreigner” so you don’t have time to look at who’s actually making your life worse.
It’s a misdemeanor for entering illegally into the country. A federal misdemeanor warrants torture and abuse?
Does that mean that RFK Jr. who was convicted of a federal felony aka possession of heroin, should be sent to prison for life and beaten and tortured?
You feel that way about the dude who died when he was denied his diabetes medication in ICE detention? The man was in the country for the past 3 decades and owned a trucking company that employed Americans for over a decade as well. Deserved? You don’t care still or?
He was picked up at a scheduled green card interview as well. Man was trying to do things the right way in the end, but do you still have no empathy for his situation and his death all because he entered illegally decades ago or what?

Faux outrage. Seems like she was interested in making it a quality story with new information and correct terminology, not manipulative language. Precision in communication is important. 60 minutes has a history of misrepresenting facts.
‘“I held a ‘60 Minutes’ story and I held that story because it wasn’t ready,” Weiss told CBS News staffers on Monday. When reached by The Post, CBS News confirmed the accuracy of the Journal’s reporting.’
‘Weiss said the story “has already been reported on by places like the [New York] Times, the public knows that Venezuelans have been subjected to horrific treatment in this prison. So to run a story on this subject, two months later, we simply need to do more.”’
‘Weiss also raised concerns about referring to the deported Venezuelans as “migrants,” noting they were in the US illegally, people familiar with the discussions told the Times.’

Does it not seem at all ironic to make this criticism and then link to a literal tabloid?
