No, it doesn't undermine it as these are fringe, widely hated politicians from a party that will hopefully receive less than 15% of the vote in the next election. Just look at the comments in the original post. <15% is, admittedly, far too much, but let's be honest here: far-right nationalism is at least partially a product of said neighbouring country they might need support against. I don't think so, but fwiw a few years ago I visited all the Scandinavian countries. Finland was the only one where people would stare at me as I walked by in the street. Wouldnt want to move there even if they rank so highly in life satisfaction surveys lol.

The reason it’s not an outrageous notion to suggest that Finnish people MIGHT be uncomfortable with multiculturalism is because they are historically a homogenous population (90% native finish) and have only recently (past 30 years) been opening up to immigration from other countries. After that, a few politicians from the right wing populist Finns party published pictures of themselves with stretched eyes to protest the firing. Unlike the Miss Finland picture, the politicians' pictures did not mention the Chinese.

A former miss Finland Shirly Karvinen has half Chinese background so that probably says more about what Finns think about Chinese / Asian looks than a few bottom-of-the-barrel ragebait right-wing nutjobs who are desperately trying to find any ways to boost their sinking popularity. The general public has actually very positive view of Asians as not complaining, hardworking and entrepreneurial people. All VERY respected features in Finnish society. And this image is big part due to Chinese as big portion of Asians living in Finland are Chinese.
I don't think so, but fwiw a few years ago I visited all the Scandinavian countries. Finland was the only one where people would stare at me as I walked by in the street. Wouldnt want to move there even if they rank so highly in life satisfaction surveys lol.

Hard to tell, because their faces were pretty much neutral. But it did make me feel unwelcome because these werent passing glances, but rather stares for a few seconds at minimum. For a country that ranks very highly on happiness indexes I rarely saw people smiling or laughing there lol.

It’s unthinkable that the average Finn would “hate Asians/Chinese”. As you know, there is a lot of agitation on the Internet, than tries to capture people into destructive ideologies, or simply dumb us down. Most often by anonymous users or fake profiles. It would be very, very strange if there was an invisible hate against East Asian people, that doesn’t leave any traces on the web forums and such. If there were any such sentiments among ordinary Finns, a certain kind of populists would try to benefit from it.

Europeans are notorious for saying “why do American care about race so much?” They think racial blindness is the solution to racism (it’s not) and that’s purely because they have not been as historically diverse as Americans. The pictured Miss Finland was eating with her friend and made the pictured face with eyes streched. The friend took a picture of the face and posted it in social media with a caption "Eating with a Chinese person" (the actual caption was in Finnish - this is a translation) as a joke. The insensitive joke caused an uproar in the social media and Miss Finland made a public apology due to the picture. Miss Finland organization would have none of the bad publicity and chose to replace the Miss Finland with the runner-up. After that, a few politicians from the right wing populist Finns party published pictures of themselves with stretched eyes to protest the firing. Unlike the Miss Finland picture, the politicians' pictures did not mention the Chinese.
