Is it normal to randomly lose the lights during the ride?

It is. Just drive faster to charge the battery better.

And hold your phone so you can use the torch if needed.

I don’t know what a phone has to do with a torch but open flames INSIDE the car is lit!

    parent root

Guessing you are American? Substitute flash light for torch. I once got some American aircraft techs very animated about using a torch to check for fuel leaks 😀

    parent root

What would people who called a flashlight a torch call what we Americans call a torch?

    parent root

    A cutting torch.
    Versus a seeing torch

    parent root
    2 points Medium_Donkey2622

Ok but what about like a torch someone would use to heat shrink or smoke

    parent root

    parent root
  • 24 points dagget10

Ah, I use to have this problem on my old car. When it happens, you need to reach over to the passenger side where the light module is, and punch the dash. They'll usually flicker and come back after that

/uj I'm not actually joking here and I'm unsure why that would fix it. I fixed it permanently eventually though

    parent
    2 points Ill-Running1986

Well, doing that at 110mph might fix ya…

    parent root
    1 points Stickopolis5959

/uj loose/ half burnt out fuse?

    parent root
    3 points dagget10

There is a loose fuse actually, but when it acts up it causes all lights to stick on, and the headlights refuse to shut off. The lights going out was caused by a 4x6 low beam, which a previous owner installed upside down. It was also not sealed, and the lens fell off as soon as I went to pull it out.

The car is a 1985 Berlinetta Camaro, the one with all the weird electronics

    parent root
  • 14 points BingusTheWonderKitn

In your case it is probably safer to drive without lights and let your eyes adjust. Instead of lights going out and not being able to see.

    parent
  • 6 points Puzzleheaded_Row8988

I once had a problem exactly the same as that on my mk7 Ford Transit, it turned out to be the Bluetooth obd2 module I had plugged into the obd2 socket, as soon as I removed that it stopped. If you have one of these plugged in I would suggest removing it then try a night time drive to see if it still happens... If you don't have anything in your obd2 socket it could be any one of dozens of different things, including the fact it's a Merc lol!

    parent
    1 points Sinister_Nibs

Isn’t that the Ford built by Mercedes?

    parent root

    parent root

Nah man, i drove it trough the winter and swapped it. I changed all the bulbs, but they went out after like a week or so. So basically i drove around with fog lights then one bulb went out for that as well. I think its poor engineering and cannot be fixed

Did you put another quarter into the dashboard for the lights feature? That's important.

That’s what happens when you travel faster than light. And by the way, it’s strange that no one complained about the speed — especially the Americans, for whom 140 km/h is a cosmic velocity.

Check the fuses to see if they have a good connection.

No, and sometimes the car doesn't want you to see something horrible. Kind of like a protection of your feelings. In this case there was probably a possum that had been run over and it's guts were all splayed out. But you didn't have to see it cause the car helped you.

Or maybe it was a raccoon. Hard to tell with no headlights.

In all seriousness, is that not the ECU re-booting or going into some sort of safe-mode?

How the F is the circuit controlling that and the harness for the dashboard the same one the headlights and critical components are drawing from? Would it not fault back to the alternator, at the very least? I don't know Mercedes. That's scary.
