• So for context, She often goes by "Yumi Sato" online and is especially active on Instagram. She often makes posts about being the "cute Japanese girlfriend" that targets white foreigners. Occassionally, She will make a post about having to respect Japan's cultures and customs and some racist posts like some nasty anti-immigration stuff like one of her videos is captioned "When you can finally date in peace in Japan w/o hearing any mandarin". No I am not kidding, That was an actual post.

So colour me shocked when I dug deeper and found out through a video of her speaking fluent mandarin that she is actually Taiwanese and actually goes by "Milu_ouo" online. You'd think that she is the only example, but Taiwanese girls larping as Japanese is surprisingly extremely prevalent and a rabbit hole of itself.

Oh the irony of hating foreigners when you are a foreigner yourself

Fucking random aside, but someone I know who is taiwanese showed her dad a nice formal picture of her, and the immigrant dad said she looked good, "very Japanese." Was very awkward

I’m Chinese and the same crap is said in my family 😭 my mom’s nickname growing up was literally “Japanese girl” in Chinese “because her eyes were so big” 💀💀💀

Are the Japanese viewed as pretty in China? Cause my Chinese friend was very offended when a classmate asked her whether she was Japanese, and her reply was an angry "No! They're ugly!"

That sounds like an individual preference rather than an opinion held widely lol. But I will say that the history of military tensions between Japan and China has caused many Chinese folks to see Japanese things negatively. My own family dealt with fleeing from Japanese militias during WWII so I get it.

My friend was raised by her grandparents so maybe it's their views she's repeating. Thank you for clarifying.

    I can't tell the difference 😭

Some Taiwanese Han Chinese have a weird nostalgia for the Japanese colonization era. Probably because they weren't abused as much/as explicitly by the Japanese authorities as they were by the Kuomintang dictatorship. Ask the Taiwanese Indigenous Peoples, particularly the mountain peoples, and you will get much different answers.

Wasn't Taiwan under Japanese occupation for like 50 years?

Yeah the history of Taiwan and Japan is pretty intertwined…so much so this chick might well be descended from Japanese people tbh. Not that her views are thus legitimized - just saying there’s a whole lot of history there

Descended from Japanese people? Possibly yes but I wouldn't say that in front of her or I'd get beat up.

    grifters gonna grift

the US does it better than anyone with self hating foreigners trying to grift

Yep, all the easier when ignorance is seen as a virtue here and the same as being “authentic”…

You'd think anti-Japanese sentiment would be the only thing that Taiwan and China would agree on.

Taiwanese people funnily enough have a very positive perception of Japan. Heck parts of Taiwanese culture comes from them!

China is saber rattling at Japan right now because Japan said it would retaliate against an invasion of Taiwan. When you got an immediate threat, old enemies can become friends

I guess Taiwanese people are more worried about the more imminent threat than the past enemy

If she was actually Japanese, she would’ve been racist towards Koreans first.

Congratulations, this comment actually made me laugh out loud

You know I was going to say something about how this seems like one of the more harmless examples to be posted in this sub until I got to the “racist posts like some nasty anti-immigration stuff” part

Oh so she's literally eastern Clayton Bigsby

  • Idk about where you live but where I live there's plenty of visibly East Asian younger people lying about their ethnicity/nationality for whatever reason:

    • Koreans are stereotyped as being more attractive
    • Mainland Chinese are known for being wealthy

So a good chunk of the people I've met, especially women, that are apparently Korean, are actually just Cantonese chinese or whatever. Similarly some guys who want to present as being much more affluent than they are, pretend to be from mainland China and speak Mandarin.

    It's weird.

  • The account on the left isn't run by the girl in the video; I've seen her before. These accounts of Asian (based in Asia) of models with racist captions are all ran by an agency or some third-party. The account where they speak their native language is their actual account.

Tbh that's a relief to hear, because some of the seemingly self-hate-driven content from racism-baity Asian adult content creators is extremely depressing, but it's much less depressing if that's just shitty 'localization' by an agency, because I'd expect no less from those sleezebags.

  • Isn't this the foreigner that hates foreigners?

  • I don’t think the person behind this account is a woman. For some reason there’s a lot of accounts using a female profile, that are actually ran by a man. I bet they are trying to push an anti immigration agenda.

At the same time, they are pushing the white man fetish narrative in these accounts too.

  • I just randomly saw one of her posts on Threads today and took a look at her profile (idk if I can link it here though?). Anyway, from her profile I doubt she is 19 (likely older) and idk if 🇯🇵/🇺🇸 implies she is also catfishing as mixed race, but as an actual mixed Asian she looks clearly full Asian.

Also, I have seen cases of "Japanese fishing" before by Chinese people, so I guess I'm not totally surprised by this case. Often western people get associated with the word weeaboo, but East Asians can definitely be weeaboos too. lol
