• Anzar, the Amazigh rain god, was believed to dry the land after no woman agreed to marry him. To bring the rain back, people offered a bride in a ritual known as Tislit Onzar “Anzar’s bride.” After the rain finally returned, in many villages in morocco (including mine) to this day children would make a small doll out of sticks and dress them and carry it around the village, a symbolic reminder of the bride offered to Anzar and a way of celebrating that the sky had opened again.
