The university of Manitoba has changed their stance on vaccination requirements for the coming school year. The university will now require faculty staff, students, and campus visitors to be fully vaccinated in order to be able to attend classes, labs, and events on campus.
This mandate violates section 7 of the Charter which protects students' right to bodily autonomy. Ownership and autonomy over the body and the ability to freely choose what does or does not enter one's body is a critical aspect of individual liberty. Universities do not own students' bodies and must never be permitted to act as if they do by coercing students to take COVID vaccines and discriminating against them if they don't. It has stopped being a medical crisis when they cross the line from recommendations to mandatory public health rules, at which point it stopped being about a virus or about data, and became a question of charter freedoms or informed consent and who controls your body.
In the letter president Michael Benarroch wrote, he mentioned that vaccines are safe and are the only solution to a safe environment on campus. Many students and staff disagree with this information. There is no vaccine that be given universally as people's bodies react differently and can cause adverse effects. The amount of short term adverse affects caused by this vaccine are alarming, they range from cardiovascular harm, neurological harm, and even death. These cases of side effects are often censored and hidden from the public to minimize "vaccine hesitancy". Students who refuse to take the vaccine are making an informed decision that cannot be infringed.
The CDC has mentioned that both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals can carry and pass the virus equally, the vaccine only works to reduce symptoms. That being said, unvaccinated individuals pose no harm to the public.
The COVID vaccine has not been approved, It has only been granted for emergency use. It cannot be mandated as we do not have nearly enough information to ensure efficacy and safety. The covid vaccines were developed only months before they were administered to the public unlike other vaccines which take 5-10 years to undergo clinical trials and where long-term safety data can be studied.
All Canadians are entitled to freedom of conscience and religion, expression, thought, opinion and belief as fundamental freedoms in section 2 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Michael Benarroch did not give any consideration to religious beliefs and opinions, this does not promote diversity and promotes segregation and discrimination between Canadians who ought to live in peace with each other in this great country.
