You can swap the Shell on your weapon for the Shell on your back. If you ditch your Shell you can place the one on the fork on your back and have nothing on the fork again, and you can get the Shell on your back and put it on the fork and go without a Shell.

I believe you can. I haven't played it in a while but I think you have to hold something, maybe hold Y if you haven't changed your bindings.

YES, I was just pressing it, so it won't work.
Hold the grab shell button to drop the shell currently equipped then hit down and the weapon shell will slip onto your back. Neat if you're playing offensive with hammer and you're just watching weapon durability
