What's the deal with syncing instances? I've been off Anki for a few months, I now tried to sync but it doesn't work on either device. I thought maybe it was related to my failure to update to the new version, yet after starting the vpn, it does work. For context, I'm in Argentina.

You linked to threads from 3 months ago that were related to a specific region of the world [deliberately skipping over the geopolitics of it ...] that has a habit of blocking access to areas of the internet. Since you don't live in that region, it's unlikely that's the specific problem you're having.
However, it could be something else related to regions and servers -- since you're the 3rd user in the past day that I've seen having this issue in Argentina, and using a VPN fixes it. See if this issue looks familiar: Cannot Sync My AnkiWeb Account (Timeout) -- and I'll respond to both of you over there shortly.
