  • With this addon, https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/678316993, when applying furigana it applies it to the whole selected side, and I always have to go back to remove the furigana that I don't want on my card. However in the Browse window, there will be empty parentheses in places where I deleted furigana.

    https://preview.redd.it/zs3cz29i3fbg1.png?width=519&format=png&auto=webp&s=e397ccb61e2fe29a8758ed14691e2befa05e2213

I guess that these are syntax characters for ruby text, which are normally invisible to the user (like how " " is used for non-break spaces), however I am not sure how to remove these parentheses in order to declutter my browse window ("()" does not seem to work). Does anyone know how to?

I can't tell if this is a question for the add-on developer -- who you can reach by clicking "Contact Author" on the add-on page -- or a question about getting Find-and Replace to work with that text.

Since this is a "small" questions thread, here's some general help with the latter --

    • It seems possible those aren't standard "Latin" parentheses characters -- since your screenshot shows (at least) 2 different types of parentheses in this text.
    • You should look at the text in the HTML view of the field (click < > above the field in the note editor) to see what exactly the characters are, and if there are any hidden characters between them.

Thank you, your latter suggestion helped me figure out what's going on.

The syntax is essentially this <ruby>[CHARACTER]<rp>(</rp><rt>[FURIGANA]</rt><rp>)</rp></ruby>, where <ruby> marks a selection as taking furigana and <rt> marks what the furigana should be. <rp> meanwhile seems to just make parentheses invisible, I have no idea what its purpose is and why it's there (perhaps it was leftover from something).

In any case, removing it using Find and Replace for <rp>(</rp> and <rp>)</rp> works, and has not visibly affected my cards in anyway.

  • Has Anki stopped being developed? I haven't seen dae for 2-3 months on GitHub.

He's still around. He replied to me a few days ago on GitHub, confirming my thoughts on a potential security issue

No 😅 . There's A LOT that goes into running a company. Just because you don't personally see him in one place doesn't mean that he's not working.

Thank you, I was worried for sec..

  • It depends on the gather/sort options in the deck options. By default, it should go through the decks in the order shown.

Thank you, I believe it is doing that, but it's slow going.

  • There are no "normal" (or good/bad/right/wrong) values for Difficulty ["D"]. It's just a component of the memory state that helps FSRS schedule each card more accurately.

D is set and adjusted based on your parameters -- so if you have a good amount of review history, and you re-optimize your parameters monthly -- you don't need to think about or do anything to specifically change D.

I get new leeches every day.

That usually indicates a problem with those cards. See -- https://docs.ankiweb.net/leeches.html .

I left it at 90% desired retention.

The real test of whether FSRS is working for you is comparing your Desired Retention with your retention results [Stats > Retention].

  • Another leech question. When a leech is tagged as a leech, does it remain a leech? Or does the leech tag get trashed once you start getting it correct?

  • How is the default leeches number (8) derived? I've left it at 8 for 5 years of using Anki and am wondering how was it derived originally?

I suppose if there was an easy answer, this would qualify as a small question. But in that case, it would probably be pretty easy to search up the answer too. If you try that and don't find anything, this is a question you should put to a larger audience.

This was just a curiosity for me, as far as I can tell, no change has ever been made, no data has ever been evaluated to derive this number. I did find that many people think the number 8 is too generous and should be reduced.

  • Hello I hope it's the right place 🙏🏻 Im using Anki to study for exams and it's a great way for me to remember definitions and stuff like that. However, after learning the material I'd like to quiz myself in a different way than just word-definition. (Let's say, I have a set about psychological tests that shows me the name of a test and I have to say what does it test and age group. I'd like to have a quiz like "this boy is 8 and may have issues with X, what to use?".)

I know you can export sets from Anki. Is there any tool that can read those sets and either make quizzes based on the information or turn it into pdfs that can be read by most tools?

I'm grateful for any advice, including that there's no way and I need to move my ass to do it myself. Thanks 🫶

Anything like that would be better to ask about in r/AnkiAi .
