• Because Apple is seen as trendy and more desirable by people with more money statistically. There, saved you a click.

  • It works in both ways, apple has copied android as well.

    Notification Pull-Down Center

Android had a unified notification shade since 2009.

iOS introduced the Notification Center in iOS 5 (2011). Before that, iPhone only showed pop-up alerts.

    Quick Settings Toggles

Android introduced quick toggles (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, data, airplane mode) around 2011.

iOS added Control Center in iOS 7 (2013).

    Home Screen Widgets

Android supported widgets from its first versions (2009).

iOS added home screen widgets in iOS 14 (2020).

    App Drawer / App Library

Android always had an app drawer to keep the home screen clean.

iOS added the App Library in iOS 14 (2020).

    System-Wide Dark Mode

Android implemented system dark mode in Android 10 (2019), with many skins having it earlier.

iOS introduced dark mode in iOS 13 (2019).

    Swipe Typing on Keyboard

Android had swipe typing since around 2010 through Swype and later Google Keyboard.

iOS added native swipe typing in iOS 13 (2019).

    Picture-in-Picture Video

Android introduced picture-in-picture in Android 8 (2017). iOS added it in iOS 14 (2020).

Split Screen and Multitasking on Tablets

Android supported split screen multitasking starting in Android 7 (2016).

iPadOS introduced comparable multitasking features years later.

    File Manager Access for Users

Android always allowed users to browse files through a file manager.

iOS added the Files app in iOS 11 (2017).

    Lock Screen Customization

Android allowed deep lock screen customization for many years.

iOS added lock screen customization in iOS 16 (2022).

    Spam Call Identification and Blocking

Android integrated spam detection and call screening earlier. iOS added similar functionality later through system APIs and carrier integration.

    Battery Optimization and Adaptive Charging

Android introduced Adaptive Battery and charging optimization around 2018.

iOS later added Optimized Battery Charging.

    Always-On Display

Android phones with OLED displays supported always-on display since around 2016.

iOS added it with iPhone 14 Pro in 2022.

Motion Photos / Live Photos Concept

Android devices like HTC and Google Pixel had motion photos earlier.

Apple later popularized the concept as Live Photos. On-Device AI Features (Smart Replies, Assistant, Photo Recognition)

Android integrated Google Assistant, smart replies, and AI photo features earlier.

iOS adopted similar capabilities later with Siri intelligence and Photos AI.

Android supported widgets from its first versions (2009)

I recall getting my G1 in October of 2008 🤔

There is not even working system wide light mode on iOS, Clock and Calculator is dark mode no matter what.

You could call the lock screen a notification drawer but imo iOS has no notification drawer at all and the lock screen is a clunky way to navigate notification in the morning.

I just wanna point out, that while no doubt Apple aped some features, no one can deny that Android OEMs are literally copying Apple’s UI screen for screen. Same interaction model and same look everything.

That’s the core of the issue.

I just got a OnePlus 15, and when I went to the Plus Key settings menu, I gasped lol – it is a straight rip of Apple's Action Button settings. Like, shockingly direct copy.

Now I don't mind, because I actually do generally prefer Apple UI (I just like Android's openness), but it was still wild to see SUCH a direct rip lol.

I lost count of how many iOS designs they completely ripped off while using my oneplus open. It was nice because it was familiar, but it was also done with less thought behind the UX so it felt like a knockoff at times.

That's fair enough. I think I'm just willing to experience that occasional "knockoff" feeling in exchange for the openness (and for the love of god, better keyboard) on Android.

What I'd really like (and be willing to pay a premium price for) is a true flagship with this Android skin (i.e. the Oppo Find X/Pro lineup) in the US. After being super disappointed by Samsung, OnePlus convinced me that maybe I could ditch my iPhone, but I'd really like the top-tier camera and event stronger battery in the Find X9 Pro.

OP 15 camera it's really good

I have it now, and it's certainly better than people made it out to be—but it still definitely pales in comparison to the cameras on Oppo and Vivo phones

It was okay a year ago but the last couple major updates have turned me off of ColorOS or whatever they call it.

My point being... Everyone copies everyone in the best practice to improve and everyone adds a little extra.

That's why android oems copy what they consider the best practices from apple as apple does the same from android

No, that’s disingenuous. At some point it’s just pure copying. Not best practices.

  • Always copy and improve upon what your competitors do well. Why not?

The other reason is anyone switching from iOS to Android needs a short learning curve to keep them from going back.

I have been on iOS for almost 8 years now and just recently switched back. The similar UI affordances make it easy to get up to speed.

It’s one thing if they ACTUALLY improve upon it, but it’s typically screen-for-screen copying.

Android will unfortunately copy even if it’s not ready for it. Google apps could not properly accommodate the Bottom Nav Bar so they inserted a white space at the bottom, creating a larger bar.

I guess I haven't seen anything truly bad. The Chinese OEMs are shameless though.

  • Because it's pointless to copy other Android brands. If I'm an Android user and my brand is copying a Samsung feature, why don't I just buy a Samsung phone and get the real deal staying in the platform? With iOS, you have to switch ecosystems to get the feature.

  • Apple sells 100 million premium phones annually. When people buy premium, they buy Apple. Premium isn't in the specs. It's in the image. That's what Apple changed when they introduced the ipod.

Nobody will be able to reinvent themselves like that again, but if you can capture a bit of that magic, you're a 9 figure company. That's a good place to be.

That's not how technology and innovation work at all.

Sure. Nobody copies brands because of their success and IP infringement has nothing to do with benefitting off another brands reputation and popularity with consumers. Sure.

Xiaomi flagship's similar design to the iphone 17 and matching name change was all just a coincidence. It had nothing to do with the fact the iphone sells the most premium phones annually. Why would that matter?

  • Of course the apple biased 9to5google won't dare to make an article saying "Why does apple copy Android phones so much?"

  • Been saying for years, Google is convinced that every Android user secretly wants an iPhone.

It's actually pathetic how little they believe in their own product...

I still want ticker notifications back. Between that and the LED, notifications literally peaked with like android 1.5

Fire whoever thought notifications should pop up/down blocking my screen

Exactly! They alienate the users they already have while trying to lure the iPhone users.

Yeah ticker notification was so good

  • [deleted]

The Pixel designed is not similar to Apple because the Pixel copied Apple, but because there have been a convergence and recently all phone OS have evolved together.

Just look at early iPhone designs, skeumorphism everywhere. If anything it's Apple that joined Android with a flatter design.

Yeah keep telling yourself that Android converged with iOS so much that the designers literally use the exact same design. Apple has Dynamic Island, suddenly boom Android has Dynamic Island, separate from the fact that Android already has a persistent notification to handle it.

  • Because Apple puts in the work on UI design that other manufacturers largely can't be bothered to do. Much cheaper to just copy.

If that were true, Liquid Glass would never have happened. It's completely unusable.

Obviously a personal preference on your end or sales of iPhones would plummet.

Environment lock-in, particularly apple lock-in, is real. It's a total dog of a UX design but it still does everything an iPhone use would want.

Sure. But that doesn't make it unusable. I've thought the Pixels UI was the ugliest thing on the planet ever since they introduced the Easter accent colors and the big blocky ugly quick settings menu, but it wasn't unusable, just horrifically ugly.

  • Your lord APPLE is also guilty of copying from Android.... and actually, APPLE has copied more tech innovations that the other way around.

"Your lord" who are you talking to lol? This is a post from 9to5Google in the Android subreddit...

This is a fucking article I shared jeez calm your tits it’s not that serious.

If that’s true than why are so many OEMs copying Liquid Glass hmmmmmmmm? They just can’t have Android be unique and different they have to copy Apple because they know it’s one of the most popular smartphone brands.

copying "liquid glass"! freaking ridiculous, that type of themes started in android 3.0 (2011) yes apple prettied it up but still it was not an "original" idea

  • You freaking redditors are weird. Downvoting a post just sharing an article. SMH.

You Redditors are weird, crying about downvotes that don't mean shit. SMH.
