I plan to start the year by taking the Night Owl from BOS to STM.

Merry Christmas!

  • Riding (one stop short of) the full length of the Empire Builder in April!

  • Riding the NER as usual

  • NextGen Acela to DC and regular NER back in Feb. I go 2-3x a year, it’ll be my first trip on Avelia Liberty. Time to see how truthful you complaining twits are about the seats.

Do your back a favor and take the old Acela :D The new ones are a nightmare. Worst trip I have had on a train in years.

The whole point of the trainset selection is to see for myself.

    I don’t trust product reviews I didn’t pay for.

Fwiw I might be the only person in the world, but I find the new Acela more comfortable. I had a 5 hour ride on the old Acela Boston to Philadelphia recently, then another 5 hour ride Boston to NYC (5 hours because of a 1 hour delay on the train) on the new Acela. My back was hurting by the end of the trip on the old Acela, but it was fine on the new one.

I get it. I used a voucher I had to do it myself. Just trying to save you a sore back. :D The food was great. Service, bathrooms, doors between cars and seats. Not so much. Go enjoy. Bring a pillow for lumbar support or to sit on.

Fair enough. I like lumbar support. I’ll bring a pillow. Thanks for the warning.

  • Probably 5-6 trips on the Hiawatha at least

I have plans for the Lakeshore limited, Acela, downeaster, Vermonter as new routes im going on.

Have some plans to visit my favorite scenic ones. Empire Builder, coast starlight and California zephyr.

I have 2 community goals, complete a solo travel guide for Amtrak. And a spreadsheet that allows people to track people's completion of riding the entire Amtrak network.

I like this because at the end of this year (2026) I will have all long distance trains done but 2. Would be great to have a way to track all the ones I have left that are all the short runs.

Originally my idea was to track how many stations in each state I've been to.

I do have a question. For the palmetto, cardinal, crescent, and silver meteor. Should I include Alexandria to NYC as it's the same route across all 4? Or mostly for stops

I would say to include them in the "route" of each. Like this year I am taking the Texas Eagle but also checking off the Sunset Limited as I am on that for about 3/4 of the route. I had never thought about stations.

I use stations because it's a reference point.

If you look at what stations match up with regional routes, there's a good chance you have crossed off a few. If you took the empire builder leaving or going into Chicago you have the Hiawatha and borealis completed

Also interesting to see how many long distance trains share tracks despite going to different destinations. The zephyr and SW chief are the same between Galesburg and Chicago. The Floridan and LSL is the same between Cleveland and Chicago as well.

  • The entire round trip length of both the Crescent and Mardi Gras in like a month!!!

  • I hadn't thought of anything, but now you've got me thinking about it!

  • In April I am taking the Lake Shore Limited to Chicago the Texas Eagle to LA (I hope Juanita is there). A short trip from LA to Needles CA to visit my son who is an engineer with BNSF then back to LA to go up to Emeryville to take the California Zephyr back to Chicago and the LSL home again.

  • I am planning to move from DC to Seattle (so Floridian --> Empire Builder). Exact timing slightly up in the air bc I have to finish taking care of some things here first.

Take the cardinal if you can. The views are really nice

I've taken it before to visit friends in Chicago in spring and yeah, I agree the views were really great. I think the schedule might not have worked out the first time I was looking, but I guess maybe since I postponed it might work out better.

    Hopefully it does!

You also won't get as screwed over with delays.

I've very weirdly had really good luck with the Floridian so I'm about due for bad, probably.

  • Well I wasn't planning anything but will happily read some reddit posts lmao
