226 TQP needed to maintain Select status (see https://www.reddit.com/r/Amtrak/comments/1pkvj2r/points_run_suggestions_from_cvs_the_station_not/ ) find me yesterday doing a day trip from Charlottesville to Roanoke and back. If my math is right, this will put me JUST over the threshold. I'm nervously waiting for the points to post to see if I'm correct.
151 south, 66 north.
To take up the 3 hour wait for the return train I visited the Virginia Museum of Transportation, just a short walk from the Amtrak station in Roanoke.
The 611 locomotive is truly impressive.
Kids will love it, but they really could do a few small things to make it a much better and educational experience. It's worth going once to see the impressive locomotives and a few rare cars (like a GM EV-1).
Amtrak was on-time both ways. I like the 1x2 business class on the regional and its location in the cafe car. Service was great and friendly. The cafe attendant on the southbound trip was especially exceptional and even personally checked on us at our seats a couple times.
I'll do this again as there's more that I want to see in Roanoke.

Sounds like fun! I've only been as far as Lynchburg, which has a lovely old station, but the museum in Roanoke sounds tempting!
I need 4,688 TQP to get to Select so tomorrow I’m taking a points run from Wilmington, DE to The Sun. 😎
Do it in Biz class and get the bonus!
Great pics and that’s an awesome museum! I needed 4600 TQP to get to select plus, so did DC to NYC and back last week in NER biz. Your trip looks more fun!
