r/Amtrak is not associated with Amtrak in any official way. Any problems, concerns, complaints, etc should be directed to Amtrak through one of the official channels.
If it’s the company I’m thinking of, good, they didn’t have the wherewithal to do this, and at that with a post yesterday about the topic, Amtrak has had way better luck with expanding into short regional routes (borealis and Mardi Gras) rather than a huge long distance endeavor
I can tell, even the dc to hburg section isn’t he more logical main line route they should’ve restored it’s a stupid jackknife Amtrak deals with that takes four fuckin hours. They’re basically a money hungry but very lazy company that just wants to use Amtraks routes and presumably trains for their own endeavors
72 hours is clown territory - the original transcontinental service that the railroads run was 56 hours from NYC to LA... this included a four hour layover in Chicago to transfer between railroads and railroad stations.
If they would have paid for new equipment themselves I would have been fine. Amtrak has equipment shortages so it’s tough to approve something like this without paying for new stuff. If they pay for the equipment and want Amtrak to staff and run it sure go for it
Honestly, good. Long-distance routes, as popular as they are among railfans, are Amtrak at its worst when it comes to the actual purpose of a public passenger rail service. Laughably low frequency, horrible on-time performance, uncompetitively expensive. Amtrak should focus on replicating the success of the Piedmont, Borealis, and Mardi Gras routes: short-distance corridor routes between highly connected cities.
It could obviously be better (if it was funded better) but it’s a great way to travel and serves a lot of people who don’t want to (or can’t) fly, and also serves a lot of rural communities.
I agree Amtrak should be expanding regional corridors but the long distance routes have value too.
You need both for a comprehensive national network ideally the long distance trains should be 3x daily with regional trains running on top and connecting to the service. Once you got a good base line it makes HSR much easier to implement once people see how good conventional rail is
