• It's been 20 degrees higher than normal for weeks now. It's alarming

  • Nice, but the lack of snow is depressing.

It’s Christmas. Don’t be a drag. It’s going to be like last year again. Sometimes that’s the way it goes. Have you ever experienced a hard winter in a truly-crappy climate (like the Midwest)? Albuquerque is almost heaven.

    Albuquerque is changing.

Matt Fitzpatrick, a climatologist at the University of Maryland, warns that, by 2080, the Sandias will look like the mountains around El Paso - hotter, dryer and more barren than today’s Sandias. Fitzpatrick explains the unfolding phenomenon in this KOB 4 article: https://www.kob.com/new-mexico/scientists-warn-future-fires-could-change-the-sandias/

Some of us highly enjoy the climate of the high desert and aren't looking forward to becoming El Paso or Phoenix.

It’s already moving in that direction. All you can do is enjoy it while it lasts. I have walked the Franklin mountains a lot (El Paso). The contrast is very apparent to me, with hundreds of Franklin miles and many thousands of Sandia miles in my memories. I know better than most of the fat scientists that the trees are dying on the Sandias and it takes centuries to regrow them. Last year saw so many pines die that I fear a lot of the unmapped trails won’t exist for long. Drought years are followed by insects killing the weaker trees. The green Sandias only have a couple decades left; I plan to be there to live with them and love them while they last. Either kill humanity by the thousands or shut TFU and just go out there and enjoy it. Perhaps record how beautiful it is while you’re there and potentially inspire others to live it and become earth-loving humans in the process.

I'm not going to stfu because it makes you uncomfortable to be reminded that you're not just capturing a beautiful scene, but also the negative changes it represents. Live in your happy place but don't expect others to.

I am very excited to learn of your solution to 8-billion humans with tech living on earth. 🥳

That's the sort of argument that got me divorced.

Facing reality is not always about solutions. If nothing else, I plan to avoid falling into blissful delusion.

We will be a drag because the West and NM get most of it’s water supply from snow melt. THIS is not sustainable. THIS will create a ripple of consequences from the river running dry, farmers unable to water crops, animals dying from starvation, to the Bosque dying. Sorry to be downer though

  • Which trail did you take to the top?

    CCC

Ah, the ‘ol direct route. 👍🏾

  • Beautiful sunrise! Did you hike OP?

I did. I was at the trailhead at 4:55 this morning with a bit of hope of catching a pretty sunrise. Mostly, due to my fantasy of capturing a beautiful photograph that everyone will love. But also, because it’s kind of exciting to walk two hours in the dark in the wilderness alone.

    Where did you start?

  • great photo! i grew up in abq and live on the east coast now — this makes me miss home
