Visiting from Detroit; man is it nice to be able to see further than like half a mile in any direction.
I’ve had this theory for a while that being able to see your whole city regularly as you go about your business makes you feel a bit more connected to it; like, complete hypothetical, but say you live in Rio rancho and catch a glimpse of buildings way out where the university is, and you remember being a student there, and you can visibly see that that place is still, like, a place where there are other students today, and not just some memory/hypothetical place. Whereas where I’m from, the only place you really see some days is your own neighbourhood, your own grocery store, and so on. It’s like all the other people out there are just out of sight and out of mind. Does this make any sense?
Hi, Indiana transplant here for half my life. Yes. You are 100% on the nose. It reminds me everyday that there’s a big wide world out there and that my stupid bubble isn’t everyone’s and there is nuance to life. I hate going back to my hometown and listening to all the junk that everyone is always talking about like: the Denny’s on the east-side burned down!!!
Makes sense to me. I get claustrophobic when I travel east. If driving, it starts sometime after Oklahoma when I40 begins to be flanked by trees. After college I lived in Chicago for a while. I could never get used to not being able to see an aerial in my minds eye. Thank you for loving Albuquerque. I sure do.
Houstonion turned New New Mexican. Completely agree. Seeing the mountains everyday makes me feel like Fible when he looks at the moon. We all have our differences, but are much closer than we think. Glad you're enjoying your time her bud.
I love Albuquirky. There is a gritty charm to the Duke City that you appreciate when you need help, a flat tire or dead battery will draw a line of people offering to help. I think its because most of us are not far removed from a time of need and can relate. Go Lobos
True I used to live in Kansas and I remember one time going back to visit and I realized there's no more mountains around and no background and suddenly I found it appreciation for knowing that the mountains are there kind of like our protectors!
Haha you're up at the Petroglyphs by Boca Negra, a little further in is a cave that the local kids have used for generations for ahem clandestine celebrations. I ended up talking to someone who grew up in the 70's and he did the same thing. I think that area is unfortunately under careful watch now and the kids don't get up to shit like we used to anymore. I remember when you could have turned around and had a straight shot to the volcanoes, before it was developed and you'd see maybe one other person out there. People live their lives day in and day out here and they never look up from the ground to see how beautiful it is.
You mean ticky-tack houses, encroaching on a national monument? Those houses are an abomination! You're at the ancient Petriglyphs & you look down and see--this. ugh. corruption & payoffs let this happen. shame on the city, the builders, and the buyers.
Wide open for sure. I would ask everyone who reads this and living in Albuquerque to consider installing low flow airators on all your faucets as we are facing a water crisis.

Nice shot, I grew up in that neighborhood right there. Wonderful place to explore as a kid around the petroglyphs
Is that near Carol Sturka’s house?
Looks like the same view. Funny how she lives on the West Mesa but her Sprouts store is the one on Central and Tramway.
Where is Carol Sturka’s house? We can’t figure it out.
We can’t tell you that. If we do, the lady who owns Walter White’s house will throw pizzas on our roof.
Here’s a post from someone who risked it.
Thank you!
She sold it last I heard. So no more pizza tosses.
Nah base of petroglyphs, close to the intersection of tesuque and Mojave

I live down in LC and just being around the mountains in general is a good reminder of that for me. Anti-Solipsism, I suppose.
Also from Indiana, just moved here 6 months ago. It still blows my mind, I don’t think I’ll ever get over it.

Edit: grammar, I am Texas educated after all...
Where in Detroit? I was born there, lived near 7-Mile and Gratiot until age 24, then NY, now NM.
Sadly I’m a poser and from the northwest metro. I do work downtown though
Even the Suburbs have a good amount of New Mexico charm to them. Thanks for the share!
Yes the suburbs have dirt too
Sure do :)

Yes, Albuquerque is beautiful ❤️
I kept waiting for the title of a late 70's TV show to appear along with wah-wah guitar music.
-Wah-Wah guitar intro-
"Danny Trejo IS Det. Jaime Jaramillo in.."
-MIDDLY MIDDLEY MEWWWW guitar lick-
"OLD DOG IN NEW MEXICO."
I’m from Saginaw! Lived in ABQ and RR for 2 years for government work. Such an amazing place 😍
Saginaw MI? I’m from Alpena! Saginaw seemed like a “big city” to me growing up lol
Yes!! Saginaw, MI! Is Alpena near the UP? I’ve heard about it.
damn right we do

Last time I went back to Kansas it was in October and it was like 80 degrees and 75% humidity and I remembered instantly why I moved here.
I kept waiting for that jump scare from the early 2000s to pop up, not gonna lie.

Waiting for the "it'd be a shame if something happened to it" shoe to drop.
I miss the food the most :(
Beautiful shot!

Meh…
If you say so
shot hole
Look at that smog!
O. Kaaaaayyyyy. Beautiful compared to what?
Detroit
Hmm.
They’re right lmao
I've never been to Detroit, so I can't say. Have you driven up San Mateo? That's not so beautiful. Or down Central? Been to the War Zone?
I guess looking over the city and the Mountains is fine, but when you're inside it trying to get from one place to the other, it's not great at all.
Looks beautiful to me. Just because it’s flawed doesn’t mean it isn’t beautiful.
Yes, the NE Heights are very nice. Sandia Mountain never disappoints. The SE and the Mesas, not so much...
