My neighbors and I sit outside in our front yards here in Old Town every Christmas eve. I'm out here now. I always walk up to cars and let them know to turn off the lights.
We got yelled at by so many tourists in your neighborhood that our lights were off. We ended up going across to the country club neighborhood. Like yes! The lights being off is on purpose!
Agree. Totally rude. I always thought it was the polite, community-minded thing to do. And somebody else posted "it's dangerous"--no, not really! Everyone is crawling along, a few mph at the most; you never hear about car crashes on luminaria drives. TURN OFF YOUR LIGHTS, FOLKS!
I know this sounds crazy, and perhaps ableist. You might be robbed or murdered, also. But I’ve heard that some people actually have tried parking their cars and walking.
Driver here… you can still see the luminarias with your lights auto on or dimmed. I personally think it is dangerous to completely turn off your lights. A handful of cars had their lights completely off, and they were honestly a hazard. They were really hard to see in an already poorly lit area.

My 2001 Toyota 4Runner has no way to turn off the headlights. Ever.
So, I don't drive the luminaria routes anymore, which sucks, but they should be enjoyed in the dark.
