• LMAO tbh i forgot Brown was a university until i read the comments on this thread . You guys are like “this sub sucks” but nah, this one was actually funny

  • Finally a post that is actually an accidental racism.

  • I mean the university is called Brown what else are you supposed to write?

    “Student at Brown University”

I don't think OP is right that they need to be more careful, but the screenshot itself does fit the "Accidental racism" theme.

I was being sarcastic. I didn't think people would take this so seriously. Just trying to have a laugh, which I thought was part of this sub, but what do I know?

dont let the haters get you down OP this post was funny and imo absolutely fits this sub

    Brown student at Brown University

  • the people saying this sucks are the same ones that'll go all soy face over the stranger thing slippers

  • ?

Abc means american born chinese And abcd means american born confused desi

I think it could be read as a university student who is brown, as opposed to a student at Brown University. Except that in the former case, “university” wouldn’t be capitalized like it is in the caption, so I’m not positive that’s what OP was suggesting, but it’s my best guess

Depends on the context, but generally speaking yes it is. There's no need to point someone's race out when it doesn't belong within the context of the story/news. Calling someone 'black', 'brown', 'white' or worse yet: 'yellow' can be considered racist. At worst it comes across as racist, at best it comes across as ignorant. For all general purposes though calling someone by the color of their skin isn't exactly professional.

Examples of what not to do and say:

    • "Black man working at the warehouse complained about working conditions"
    • "White man riding bicycle falls into lake."
    • "Brown man eating at restaurant is poisoned."
    • "Most of my employees are brown."
    • "The owner of the restaurant is Indian and I mean 'feather Indian', not 'dot Indian'."
    • "Asian man witnessed shooting"

Examples of when it's OK to bring someones race/ethnicity and/or how to say it:

    • "African-American group complains about poor working conditions and discrimination in warehouse"
    • "It is unclear as to who fell into the lake, but the coroner states it was a Caucausian man in his mid 30's"
    • "I'm sorry officer, I do not know the race of the man who assaulted the lady since I was far away. I just know he is brown-skinned."
    • "Many black people in the United States identify as African-American."
    • "Survey shows most Asian-Americans have a positive view on the economy."
    • "I own my own company and most of my employees are Hispanic-American."
    • "The owner of the restaurant is Native-American"

I can't believe I have to explain this here, but I hope it clears it up. Also the point of my post was to be funny, I guess I failed miserably. The name of the university is 'Brown University' with a brown-skinned person in the image so I though it fit this sub. A better title would've been: "Student at Brown University witnessed shooting." Or something.

I'm not accusing ABC of being racist. I just found it funny they didn't find a more appriopriate title.

My post was in good jest and spirits, I didn't think people would take it so seriously. I don't know what to say :D.

Of course, especially when it is not related to the topic. It provides no contextual benefit and just invites bias.

  • Nah, you're just illiterate.

  • Yeah this sub sucks. I’m out

This isn’t an airport, you don’t have to announce your departure.
