In 2023, multiple Target stores were threatened because they had pride gear out. Citing safety concerns (which at least some were legitimate), Target removed some pride items. In subsequent years, pride gear wasn't as front-and-center, but it still existed.
Some LGBT people said that Target "caved in to extremists" and started an unconditional boycott of the brand.
I honestly did not even know about that. All of the target boycotting I know of is because they immediately rescinded their DEI policies as soon as this administration took office and decided to end support for dei initiatives.
To be honest the idea that you could answer with that much confidence despite the fact that this was a giant thing earlier in the year kind of surprises me.
I think most of the pride outrage was driven by Libs of Tik Tok. There were other conservative influencers walking around Targets and filming themselves screeching at clothing. With how upset they are you’d think target was selling blowup dolls or something.
After this organized attack took place, stores across the country that were featured in these videos were having bomb threats called on them. Which is when corporate decided to respond by scaling down pride rather than waiting for them to find something new to be angry about.
Go figure.. but really, it just means we have an eatablished pattern of target walking back support of the minoritized, so as far as I can tell it's still a far better reason than the person I replied to presented it as.
Ty for the context! And they didn't even fire the guy after the most recent boycott, they just demoted him as far as I'm aware.
That boycott seems entirely undeserved, if they were threatened then it's basic sense to try to protect your employees from being assaulted or killed or something
are you actually?! imean what an amazing coincidence lmao this is the best accidental ally post ever! (its a lot more wholesome of a scenario) he doesn't know the colors or whats going on probably but everything was done with love. :)
Unfortunately, it’s from target.
Target is so fucking stupid. Them bending the knee to court 33% of the country, most of whom will NEVER shop at Target was mind-numbingly stupid.
Whats wrong with Target?

is it really unconditional? cause that would just be called not shopping somewhere anymore

Could they have reacted better? Yes. Do I understand why they took this course of action? Also yes.
Second comment in a row downvoted, maybe my opinions sucks
