Not entirely true. You can deploy your reserve without deploying your main. For example, if you are forced to leave the plane at a very low altitude, say 1500 feet, as the result of an aircraft emergency, you are supposed to go right to your reserve and not even bother with the main parachute.
Reason being, the reserve is made of a different material, one that is porous and designed to be opened in precarious situations and doesn’t require a stable body position to function, though being in a stable position when you do reply your reserve is alway optimal.
You know they have backup parachutes right? Plus, this was the backup parachute actually that deployed because the hook for it snagged itself on to the plane since.. I don't know what they were trying but this is why he got to be in this situation. And after he deployed his normal parachute.
