Surgery is two weeks away! I just scheduled it today. I'm nervous. Super nervous, actually. But also so excited to live a life free of hemorrhoids!! I've had them for years and after two pregnancies, things were not pretty down there lol
I'm presently not in any pain from the hemorrhoids so for the next 2 weeks I'll just be soaking up every minute that I can walk normally and be up and moving. I know that post op I'll probably be bedridden for 7-10 days.Ā

I have one internal one that comes out a little with every BM and I have to push it back in. And then I have an external one. I had them managed so well up until last year. Last year I had a painful flare that lasted a month. And then around winter time, I became so anxious about getting a stomach bug which could cause bad diarrhea which could make my hemorrhoids worse. The anxiety of that became so debilitating and I still struggle with it now. That's honestly what pushed me to consider getting them removed because the anxiety I have about what I eat as to avoid diarrhea, contracting any GI illnesses, etc has so severely impacted my life, that it'll be literally a breath of fresh air to have these things cut off.Ā
The doctor I saw when I had a fissure made it sound like 'roid removal wasn't an option even though I've struggled with them for like 20 years. What are the magic words I have to say to get a specialist to okay a surgery?

So I saw my surgeon 2 days following an ER visit for said hemorrhoids. I was super nervous at the ER being examined. It was just a visual exam, nothing was put in me. When I saw the colorectal surgeon, I felt fine being examined (again, nothing was put in me) but I felt more confident given that he's a colorectal surgeon who sees butts all day. For both examinations, I was comfortable and it wasn't weird. I was laying on my left side with my knees tucked into my chest. For surgery I'm pretty sure I'm just going to be laying on my back.Ā
I have been reading story after sorry on here and YouTube of people who have had the surgery. And although 90% of the stories make it seem totally not worth it bc of the recovery, for me, it feels like the step I need to take to live my life again and not be bogged down by these damn hemorrhoids.Ā

Absolutely! And 100%. I told my husband - the first BM I'll have following surgery I know will be painful but at least I won't have to push my hemorrhoid back in or worry about making sure my external hemorrhoid is clean! It's going to be amazingĀ
No a sitz bath is a basin that sits in the toilet. I do have a bathtub but I'm also buying a sitz bath when I don't feel like filling up the tub. Some people even try to have a BM in the sitz bath as it relieves some of the discomfort from it. I figured it might be useful to have just in case.Ā
Recovery varies. I don't have my first follow up appointment until 4 weeks. My surgeon said "I don't see patients before 4 weeks because if I did, they'd come in and punch me". It's a painful recovery. On average, most people aren't completely 100% healed for 3-6 months.Ā I'm currently 31 and I've had hemorrhoids since I was 20, I think?Ā
I had the surgery many years ago. It took months to recover. The problem is that it doesn't have time to heal as that body part gets used every day, opening the wound each time.
My advice is after the toilet paper is clean, use baby wipes to get really clean (don't flush them).
Sadly my 'roids came back. However I discovered that it is not necessarily the 'roids in themselves that cause pain, it is when they interact with feces that the pain occurs. Even the tiniest spec of feces can cause that itchy pain. Using baby wipes to get squeaky clean is the solution. Sometimes, hours after a bowel movement, I feel the itch. A baby wipe finds the spec and I'm. fine.
Now I have 'roids but do not suffer from pain at all.
Better than wipes, install a "bum gun" saves on toilet paper and get you very clean. I would strongly recommend installing this for after surgery.

It's incredible that in the United States you have to pay for something that should be the state's property. Where I live, in 6 months at most you get the operation for free. I hope the cost of the operation is not a problem for you anyway.Ā
I agree. I'm on my husbands healthcare plan and we pay a lot per month for our plan and yet we still have this huge bill for the surgery. Thankfully we are able to set up a 2 year payment plan so it isn't all at once.Ā
This is crazy! I'm in the UK so healthcare is free but the hospital I work for does private operations as well and a private haemorrhoidectomy is less than Ā£3000 including all consultations before and after.
I had it done almost 3 months ago. 2 internal and 1 thrombus external plus a fistula all in oneā¦.. let me FN tell you. The first 5 weeks after is HELL I would rather have my 9 pound 14oz baba again. Pray to Jesus there are no words. The surgeon can kiss my new assā¦
However, once the recovery was nearly done I will say itās worth it. Life is so much better, and to be honest once people are looking at your bootie all the time you feel sexy again.
Baths will be your best friend. Take the colace 3x a day and miralax every day. That will make a world of difference. Have patients with yourself, this surgery sucks. (Mine was legit worst case scenario so maybe it wonāt be so bad)

Not in my experience. I had a truly awful hemorrhoid flare lasting from September to just a few weeks ago. I had a surgical consult in October, he wanted to see how things settled after 7 weeks. I just went back last week and he saw that my hemorrhoid flare healed wrong and caused a fistula, which needs surgery. So while I'm under, he's going to just remove my hemorrhoids.Ā
I donāt know where I heard or read this , just getting the knots out is temporary solution. If you donāt manage it by life style changes ? It will come back.

The recurrence rate of them returning in that spot after beingĀ excised out is very low because he's removing the anal cushions where the hemorrhoid is. There are other anal cushions that could turn into new hemorrhoids if lifestyle changes don't happen. I have had an externalĀ hemorrhoid since my 20s but it was nothing and then following back to back pregnancies and pushing too long in labor, I developed the internal hemorrhoid. Since then, I've had no new hemorrhoids develop because I have changed my habits to avoid worsening my situation so I'm confident that I won't be dealing with any hemorrhoids in the future.Ā
I cleaned up my diet. I lost a lot of weight. I drink 100 oz of water per day. I walk a lot. I do not sit on the toilet for longer than I need to. And I use a squatty potty.Ā

Yes both hemorrhoids will be excised off and then stitched up. This is called a closed hemorrhoidectomy. Another technique is to leave the wounds open without stitches. I was relieved to hear that my surgeon doesn't do this.Ā

I know, it does seem weird to leave the wound open but the idea is to let your body heal on its own from the deep tissue outwards but it is anecdotally more painful than when stitches are used, and the recovery takes longer. Recovery is basically pain management for a few weeks while making sure to keep stool as soft as possible. Most people use a bidet or take a bath following a BM to get clean and then gently blot dry or use a fan to dry the area
You can shower after the first 24 hours. But every BM for up to 3 weeks is like knock the wind out of you/seeing stars. It hasnāt been easy at all BUT Iām so glad I did because I already feel like my quality of life is better.
You do have to wipe. I use flushable wipes only. Toilet paper would be too rough. Sitz bath immediately after cleaning. Itās been a month for me and Iām still sitz bathing.
Not in the spot where the anal cushions are removed but hemorrhoids can form in the remaining anal cushions that aren't removed. Lifestyle change after surgery to prevent future hemorrhoids is necessaryĀ

I've had them for about 10 years but they weren't painful or symptomatic that whole time. After my last pregnancy 5 years ago they got bad and that lasted for about a year. Then I managed them really well for 3.5 years and then I had a really bad flare that caused all sorts of problems, both physical and mental and it led to me really having no choice in the matter. Well, I guess I do have the choice but at this point it's just a no brainer that my life would be so much better without them.Ā
I had this done 2 years ago. First week was pretty hard but doable. If it hurts just get in a hot bath and pain will drop dramatically. Make sure to keep with the pain meds that the doc prescribes. Week 2 was much better and I was able to work from home. I was back in the office start of week 3. While it did take several more weeks to get back to normal, it did not hurt too bad after that. I wish someone would have told me thisā¦the first time you āgoā after the surgery will be painful but take it easy and each time after gets better.
I had them after my pregnancy too, 3 months after my son was born I had the surgery to remove them (plus also to fix a complication from giving birth). I never knew those things could be so painful.

My favorite breakfast is half of a Dave's killer bagel and a slice of whole grain toast with peanut butter and jelly on both. Then a cup of coffee with vanilla protein powder blended in š¤©

I can't give you a definitive answer on that. I try not to sit too long but sometimes it's unavoidable.
I have use a bidet and a bum gun. I found the latter better as there is more water pressure.

They were done at the same time so Iām not sure which was worse. In total I had 10 stitches. The worst was the first BM after my surgery which was about 18ish hours and solid as a rock. I pray you have a good soothing and life changing recovery ā¤ļøāš©¹

Wow good for you I had 4 kids and my hemorrhoids are really bad. How are they going to do it?
My surgeon will excise them out - not sure with what, could be scalpel, could be electrocautery - and then will stitch up the wound.Ā
