I don't have great English so sorry for that.
I was born with RTA. It causes my blood bicarbonate level to be very low, chloride is high and potassium fluctuates alot. I take potassium citrate and bicarb tablets to manage it.
It causes calcium deposits on my corneas and also damages lens and retina. I have had many different surgeries including cataract surgery and multiple corneal transplants. The most recent being a keratoprosthesis surgery on my left eye.
I am a student of marine science and want to be a marine biologist, so yes this disease has made that harder. My family is not completely on board with my career choice but they have accepted it.
I will reply as soon as I can but it will be with breaks because I'm still recovering from my most recent surgery.
What keeps you motivated to pursue marine science despite the challenges of your health and vision?
It's hard to say what exactly but becoming a biologist and working wirh animals, plants, etc has always been my dream. Sure sometimes it feels impossible with my health but there's still hope.
How is your eyesight after all these surgeries?
It gets better for a little while and then gets worse, sometimes gets worse than before.
How painful is this condition for you?
The pain varies, sometimes it's nothing, sometimes the pain is too much (in the kidney area and eyes). It also triggers some very bad migraines
