I’m getting a bilateral breast reduction with potential areola reconstruction in a bit over two weeks. I am 22 years old and very very very excited for my surgery! I have wanted one for years. Ask me anything.
34E to a 34C. Back pain, general uncomfortableness, and it is so hard to find good clothes that fit. Recovery is like one week of drugged up stupor then 5 weeks of not being able to lift anything heavy or put my hands above my head
Gonna give you a pro tip that surgeons don't understand bra sizes. They work in CCs. So when you're healed up, use the sub r/abrathatfits to make sure you get resized properly. A 34C is very small when properly fitted and not everyone can go down that small depending on your starting volume. And a lot of people get married to a size and then get disappointed because their surgeon sold them on a certain cup size.
oh yeah my surgeon and i have discussed the actual size i just used the cup size as a shorthand bc that’s easier for most ppl to understand lol. i dont have my heart set on a cup size, we’re just going for something proportional to my body
My good friend had this surgery and the recovery was very long and difficult. I hope you are able to take significant time off work/school/responsibilities.
I had this surgery at age 24 and recovery was easy for me. I never took the heavy pain meds, rested for the first week then spent the next week pretty normally around the house. Good luck OP, it was the best decision ever for me.
Exactly this - plus different surgical techniques could also play a role.
I had periaerolar so my recovery was a breeze. The technique was less invasive and I could raise my arms above my head and do things independently pretty much immediately. Some of my other friends who’ve gotten T-anchor or double incision had a LOT more difficulty in terms of recovering because the surgical technique was more invasive.
I had the surgery and recovery was very easy and i only needed pain killers for 2 days. Don’t worry about pain it’s one of the least painful cosmetic surgeries you can get. I was back at work 5 days later
Had a gf long ago who had the same complaint. Anything that was a good fit for her chest was too big for her hips and vice versa. I hope it goes well and you have fun restocking your wardrobe.
I’m happy for you! I’ve had mine and still happy with my decision every day. However mine are slowly growing back. Have you considered that possibility among not being able to breastfeed and such? How do you feel about it?
yeah, i’ve considered that. it’s definitely a worry. but my surgeon says he may not even have to move my nipples so it shouldn’t be affected… and with the state of the world i’m not sure if i even want kids so who knows lol
I havent had boob surgery as an excuse and wasn't able to breastfeed despite no one else in tha family having issues just got unlucky and never grew enough gladular tissues.
Exactly. No one knows who will be able to, or not. I put off my reduction until after children for this reason, good thing I did as they grew and grew. But BF isn't the be all, healthy and happy baby/ mother is what is
I would be so freaking excited. What is one thing you are excited about doing afterwards that people with small breasts would have no idea that it’s even a thing. For me, lying flat on my back while still being able to breathe would be pretty far up there. I started to panic before an MRI when they had me remove my bra.
Oh my gosh I wish I could upvote this more. That is exactly how I feel. When I was in middle school I got a dress code violation because my shirt was too tight - it wasn’t. It just showed that I had breasts. The literal next day another girl wore the same shirt, same tightness, but she was flat chested. She didn’t get in trouble.
god yeah that exact same thing happened to me. it’s so frustrating. being a woman in the world is exhausting enough but being a woman with a chest is just absurd
I remember one of the first nights after surgery, I woke up panicking because I didn’t ‘feel’ my boobs while lying down, it felt so surreal and like I was missing something, my body didn’t know what to do! It’s absolutely a weight lifted off of you. Best decision ever!
Same, my surgery isn’t scheduled until next year because of my schedule, but I’ve already done all the preliminary stuff and it was basically automatically covered because of how much tissue they will be removing. I’ve known I wanted one after I was done having kids for years, so I started laying the ground work with my doctor years ago (just making sure my complaints were documented. Back pain, rashes, bruising and indents from bras, difficulty exercising due to breast pain). None of that ended up being necessary. My GP just looked at my chest and said “okay, I’ll refer you to surgery.” The surgeon similarly went “yeah, makes sense.” And then she just documented “patient will require more than 500g tissue removed” on the preapproval form and I got an automatic approval letter within days.
It was kind of funny, I was all geared up to have to advocate for myself at every step but everyone involved was like “oh yeah, those things are too big.”
yes, because it causes me back pain that can not be resolved thru any other interventions. they covered it pretty quickly and easily surprisingly, but it was also the week after the United CEO shooting so im convinced they were trying to make sure no one gets even madder at healthcare CEOs lol
Wear the special bra exactly as they tell you. After that, I wore a nice sports bra even when asleep for months (still do).
Be careful with your drains (they are gross). If your stitch lines seem off at all, like infected or painful, contact your surgery team right away! Take progress photos of the healing so you can compare.
If you are a side or stomach sleeper, get yourself a curved breastfeeding pillow. Your breasts will stay hard for months. Tuck them into the pillow when you sleep until they soften.
Good luck! I’m glad you’re not waiting. I have 2 friends who got breast reductions- like going from H to C/ D and they feel So much better. However they waited until they were in late 39s/ early 40s and suffered for years with back pain.
One of my friends ended up finding breast cancer during the breast reduction- the mammograms she had had didn’t catch it . So if there’s a family history of breast cancer give your surgeon a heads up. It might save your life.
i actually posted on no stupid questions a week or so ago about what happens if they find cancer during a reduction… no family history but still an irrational concern of mine
I understand the fear, but if you get surgery and they don’t see anything weird you know for sure it’s all good. In the case of my friend, They sent off the tissue to pathology- she had a complete mastectomy and reconstruction a few weeks later .
What is your current cup size? Why do you want a reduction? Do you have aches because of the extra weight of these? As a woman who does not have large boobs, I wonder how it feels like to want a breast reduction.
34E going to a 34C. i have back pain but also it’s just exhausting socially sometimes to be a woman with noticeably large breasts. can’t wear a tight-ish shirt without feeling like a walking pair of boobs.
i did go to the gym to work on the back problems. it did not improve because having two 2+ pound weights on your chest is very strenuous. i am 5’8 and 135 pounds. this is not a question of needing to lose weight
Your Doctor makes money operating, if you want help with something he will gladly do so as long as it does not risk your health in a concerning way, and through experience i know you can stengthen your body and help with balancing "the weight" but exercise selection, execution and consistency are the important parts, it does not matter what i think, if you dont like your breasts the way they are and think that an operation is the way to go i wish you nothing but the best and a happy life, we dont know each other and i dont have the anwsers, prayer, trust, and Discipline is what i believe in.
I just dont trust in operating everything just because it is a possibility trough modern medicine, after i did all i can do to change something about my situation i will reach out for help. I would accept you how you are and that is what i want to be reflected in my answer, but as said before you do you i wouldnt necessarily listen to the opinion of someone else either, as long as your happy and everything goes smoothly, i dont have anything to say. My opinion doesnt matter im human like you so its imperfect i hope your happy and i mean it. Much love
well, it’s not a guarantee that i wouldn’t be able to. some women are able to, some aren’t. my surgeon says he may not even have to move my nipples so in that case i’d probably still be able to. i don’t even know if i for sure want kids given the state of the world lol. so yeah it’s a worry but not nearly big enough to affect my decision
Congrats on making the decisions I had one at age 39. (4 months ago) and I am SO glad I did it. I’m from the uk so no insurance but still happy.
I read a comment saying just go to the gym and accept you at beautiful or some crap. And honestly people have no idea… also try doing cardio with two boulders bouncing around or a sports bra so tight you can’t breathe.
for me I did also lose a lot of weight but the reduction actually Meant I looked the same size as the rest of my body!
Recovery wise…I hated week 1-2… make sure someone looks after you the first week if possible. Silly things like my plates and cups are all too high so I had to move them!
week 3 was also not great but by my week 4 consult I was happy! And back in the Gym as soon as I was allowed.
Good luck with your op !!
Also if uk based I can for you post op bra recommendation. I tried a few !!
Also I work from home and was back working after a week.
BUT moving about was different. Sitting to standing was so uncomfortable/painful. I had to hold my new tiny boobies as I say or stood as the tiny movement was painful.
But staying still is fine! Sleeping on a wedge pillow sucks but I only did that for 2 weeks.
I am a dumbass man with a gf who also wants breast reduction surgery.
She told me she’s hesitant because it’s possible her boobs will grow back.
Is that true? Or am I just gullible?
a dude voicing his opinion, thinking that women should choose staying attractive for men (and with that sacrificing their comfort and health) instead of choosing their already mentioned comfort and health 💀💀 i wonder why everyone is mad…
Ok ok I’m familiar with that size but I can’t visualize how big 34E. I don’t think those are enormous. Hope the surgery is an success and you love the boobs
I hope the pain gets better after your reduction. Don’t listen to the pigs who are telling you to not get the tissue removed. Your physical health is important and as you said you get the wear cute outfits without people thinking you’re trying to be slutty
No question, just wanted to share. I had mine last year and i'd like to think it was one of the best decisions of my life! I can finally walk with my back straighten up (not due to back pain, but due to confidence issue). The scars are still there but atp, i dont mind! Sometimes i look at ladies with nice natural big boobs, i still have a bit of a "oh i wish i hadnt done mine this small" thought. But whatever, i'm still very happy! Hope the same goes to you!
Honestly my recovery was pretty smooth! I guess my advice would be if they offer you percocet, take it lol. The worst part was the drains if you have them; they don’t really hurt but they were very uncomfortable. Also, if you don’t have dry shampoo, definitely get some unless you have someone to wash your hair for you.
yeah, i’ve considered that. it’s definitely a worry. but my surgeon says he may not even have to move my nipples so it shouldn’t be affected… and with the state of the world i’m not sure if i even want kids so who knows lol
were you provided informed consent about risks? my mom had this done many years ago because of back pain. They botched the surgery. tried to fix it and made it worse. Then gaslit my mom for decades. she suffered chronic pain for years...largely because of the amount of scar tissue. She also had lymphatic issues since the surgery affects lymphatics as well. it ended up causing cancer ~ which she beat..but she died because of the scar tissue.
it probably depends on the person. I was always large and thought I'd like to have the surgery, but after the horrors my mom experienced, I decided I'd never go under the knife unless it was life or death. I WAS able to do proper weight lifting to strength the muscles and I've never had issues ~even when my breasts actually got BIGGER after 5 years of breastfeeding.
I always did have issues trying to find a proper running bra though!
I got a breast reduction at the age of 21. I was a 10G/H. I went down to a 10C.
I’m 27 and I am a 10E. I wish I had waited until I was a bit older, I had no idea they could grow back…I also had no idea getting a reduction so young would increase the chance of them growing back by like 90%.
Glad to hear you’re doing it for your health and wellbeing OP. Someone I know got it done and said it was the best thing they ever did. As someone suffering from back issues I feel your pain.
Best wishes for good healing.
Is your insurance covering this ? If so, how did you get it deemed medically necessary? I went for a consultation one time and was denied and was told to do massage and physical therapy :/
Some doctors refuse to do certain surgeries [hysterectomy, bisalp, breast reduction and such,] out of fear that they'll be sued for malpractice, or refuse because of misogynistic beliefs that women shouldn't change themselves because their future husband might not like it.
I'm actually surprised if the surgeons decline because of fear of malpractice. my mom had a botched surgery (actually 2 because they tried and failed to fix the first one ) Lawyers told her she actually had a case, but she couldn't find a lawyer who actually WANTED to spend the time and effort on it.
I am 5’1, 117 lbs, with a 34F chest (34DDD). I am really really considering a breast reduction and lift. I have medicaid so IDK if it would be covered but holy hell does my back hurt at the end of the day. I also hate feeling like a walking pair of boobs.
Ugh same here. 5’2, 120lbs and I’ve wanted a breast reduction since I was 15. I’m 43. I am starting the process next year to see costs, insurance coverage, etc. im honestly just so sick of not feeling comfortable in a regular tank top bc I have a chest. Like for almost 30 years of my friggin life I have hated having bigger boobs.
Just a tip for anyone younger thinking about it. I waited and am now 43 and my chest has 100% affected my posture. I spent my whole life trying to minimize my boob size that I would sort of hunch forward. It’s hard to stand up straight with two bowling balls on your chest. So now I just have the worst posture. It has gotten better after years of strength training but ughhh….i wish I would have done it 20 years ago.
My back will literally hurt so badly when I relax it because I hold so much tension at my chest. I’ve cried before when going to bed because that pain is so intense in my spine right behind my chest. If I wear a bra, I can feel all the weight I’m holding and it gives me a panic attack but if I wear a sports bra, I end up with itchy bumps and heat rashes since my chest is squished together.
Please get over to r/abrathatfits in the mean time. At 117 pounds, there is no way you're a 34 band. I'm the same height and have many pounds on you and am a 32/34. Part of your issue with pain is likely a badly sized bra.
I’m going to check it again. Maybe I’m measuring wrong but I got professionally sized at a boutique shop that is highly regarded and they said it was 34 too.
Shops mis-measure all the time. A lot of generic bra bands for bigger busts start at 34 band so they'll start you there and downsize the cup to make a sale.
In reality, bras are made down to a 28 band, with some limited 26 bands even being available. Cups easily go up to a UK L, which is many cups up from DDD as UK has double letters after DD.
Here's a properly fitted 34DDD for reference to body size (you'll see why I don't think you're a 34): http://bra.pe/IuUD/
What are you going from and to in terms of size?
What made you want the surgery?
How is the recovery and are there any potential side effects?
34E to a 34C. Back pain, general uncomfortableness, and it is so hard to find good clothes that fit. Recovery is like one week of drugged up stupor then 5 weeks of not being able to lift anything heavy or put my hands above my head

I have no idea what that means, looked it up and i still have no idea what it means
what
bra the sizes
Go to a store and compare the sizes. The letter refers to cup size, the number refers to the size of the band and shoulder straps like a tshirt would.
Is your main motivation pain and uncomfort? Also congrats! Hope it goes great
yep! also partly because i want to be able to wear cute clothes lmao
Had a gf long ago who had the same complaint. Anything that was a good fit for her chest was too big for her hips and vice versa. I hope it goes well and you have fun restocking your wardrobe.
yes!! that’s exactly the problem. size large on top size small on bottom. dresses are impossible.
I’ve had the same exact thoughts as you before surgery, so makes sense. I’m glad you’re making the decision!
My daughters surgeon said 70% of women can breastfeed. But like you said, you aren't sure if you want children
But BF isn't the be all, healthy and happy baby/ mother is what is
Mine did grow back after 1st reduction. Had 2nd and they stayed that time lol. Best thing I’ve done for myself
What size did you go down to the first time? Also if you would have gone even smaller would you think that could have prevented the second surgery?
I went down to a small C w/ my first reduction. No I don’t believe so.
Oof that’s good to know, I’m already considering a 2nd surgery too 😆
Oh no I didn’t know that could happen:(
I would be so freaking excited. What is one thing you are excited about doing afterwards that people with small breasts would have no idea that it’s even a thing. For me, lying flat on my back while still being able to breathe would be pretty far up there. I started to panic before an MRI when they had me remove my bra.
i want to go braless!!!!! i want to wear a dainty top and a flowy skirt and not feel like the town whore
God bless you, we need more confident women like you! ❤️
I remember one of the first nights after surgery, I woke up panicking because I didn’t ‘feel’ my boobs while lying down, it felt so surreal and like I was missing something, my body didn’t know what to do! It’s absolutely a weight lifted off of you. Best decision ever!
Literally!
Are you getting your insurance to cover it? If so, how?

It was kind of funny, I was all geared up to have to advocate for myself at every step but everyone involved was like “oh yeah, those things are too big.”
yep same here. it’s so weird thinking about an insurance agent looking at a picture of my breasts and being like hmm… yes they are rather large…
yes, because it causes me back pain that can not be resolved thru any other interventions. they covered it pretty quickly and easily surprisingly, but it was also the week after the United CEO shooting so im convinced they were trying to make sure no one gets even madder at healthcare CEOs lol
No question, just a high five! You will be so happy! I had mine reduced from H to about a C.
thank you!! any recovery tips?
Wear the special bra exactly as they tell you. After that, I wore a nice sports bra even when asleep for months (still do).

Thanks! I bet they look nice though. Good luck with your surgery! You wil probably avoid back problems going forward.
Why dont you go to the gym to work on the back problems, and just Acceccept yourself as beautiful as your are before going under the knife?
i did go to the gym to work on the back problems. it did not improve because having two 2+ pound weights on your chest is very strenuous. i am 5’8 and 135 pounds. this is not a question of needing to lose weight
Probably didnt train right way, but you do you gl&hf much love
why do you assume i, and my doctors, are incorrect?

Did it take long to find a good doctor?
no, thankfully! i had only two consults and decided to go with the first one.
What’s areola reconstruction entail? Sounds painful
lol just moving the areola. yeah it’s all gonna be painful but that’s what hydrocodone is for lol
Awesome. One last question what are you looking forward to wearing most after?
[deleted]
well, it’s not a guarantee that i wouldn’t be able to. some women are able to, some aren’t. my surgeon says he may not even have to move my nipples so in that case i’d probably still be able to. i don’t even know if i for sure want kids given the state of the world lol. so yeah it’s a worry but not nearly big enough to affect my decision

a dude voicing his opinion, thinking that women should choose staying attractive for men (and with that sacrificing their comfort and health) instead of choosing their already mentioned comfort and health 💀💀 i wonder why everyone is mad…
They hating cuz they don’t have big monster melons
i have big monster melons in my basement, wanna see?
No thanks
ew what a poser
?
?
Why though?
back pain, neck pain, because it’s my body and i want to
Are you getting it done due to back issues? How big are they now And what will be your new size? How much you weigh?
yes. 34E. 5’8 135 pounds
34E is current or what you going to?
going down to a 34C
Ok ok I’m familiar with that size but I can’t visualize how big 34E. I don’t think those are enormous. Hope the surgery is an success and you love the boobs
34E is definitely not enormous. Going down to a C just means she will lose 2 inches from her bust measurement.
Ahhhhhh gotcha!
Goodness. I’m picturing you with fairly big feet so you don’t tip over lol. All the best/here’s to a speedy recovery!
Can I ask if your 521 in your username has any significance? I also have 521 in my username 😊
nope it was randomly generated
ah, I chose it since it sounds like I love you in Chinese!
Hell yeah!!!! Congrats!! How much does it cost? Good luck!!!!
insurance is covering it!
EVEN BETTER!!!!! I hope ur pain gets sm better😩 i cant even imagine!! AHHH im so excited for you!!!!!
Yeah i bet the back pain sucks. Is it upper back pain?
yeah and neck
I hope the pain gets better after your reduction. Don’t listen to the pigs who are telling you to not get the tissue removed. Your physical health is important and as you said you get the wear cute outfits without people thinking you’re trying to be slutty
Best decision I ever made. Good luck!
thank you! any recovery tips?
Just do as your surgeon says. REST!!!
I’ve always wanted to get one! What are you looking forward to the most?
clothes shopping lol
Oh gosh, that will be joyous. Rather than choosing to look prudish or like you’re trying to show everything off (with no inbetween)
Not a question, but more of a statement:
Nooooooooooooooo!
fuck off :)
In all seriousness hope it goes well for you.
Congrats! I don’t have a question, but I’m a trans guy who has had top surgery and it was life-changing. So happy for you!
thank you! i imagine the recovery process is pretty similar. any tips?
Honestly my recovery was pretty smooth! I guess my advice would be if they offer you percocet, take it lol. The worst part was the drains if you have them; they don’t really hurt but they were very uncomfortable. Also, if you don’t have dry shampoo, definitely get some unless you have someone to wash your hair for you.
What size will you go down to?

my mom couldn’t breastfeed us because of her reduction. Something to consider if you plan on having kids.
yeah, i’ve considered that. it’s definitely a worry. but my surgeon says he may not even have to move my nipples so it shouldn’t be affected… and with the state of the world i’m not sure if i even want kids so who knows lol
FFS this comment has been posted and OP responded a few times. Not everyone is obsessed with breastfeeding. Fed is best. Move on!
Are you overweight? Just wondering if that was an approach for breast reduction first?
no. 5’8 135 pounds
Best decision I made! I had my done at age 38 (I’m 42 now) and it was quick and easy recovery
Came to say i had one 10 years ago and my daughter had hers 7 weeks ago. Best decision!
No god no!!!
You fuckin suck my guy. If it makes her comfortable, that's what should matter.
Man you guys really can't take a joke can you?
Man, you really can’t take a hint, can you?
Read the room bro
Yeah I guess ask me anything doesn't really mean anything
Your original comment wasn’t even a question lmao, just a gross, creepy comment
Isn't this one of the surgeries with the highest satisfaction rates, overwhelmingly positive physical and psychological results!
you are the worst type of person
It was the best decision I made. You will be so happy!!
Can't take a joke can you?
can’t come up with an actually funny joke can you?
What?
were you provided informed consent about risks? my mom had this done many years ago because of back pain. They botched the surgery. tried to fix it and made it worse. Then gaslit my mom for decades. she suffered chronic pain for years...largely because of the amount of scar tissue. She also had lymphatic issues since the surgery affects lymphatics as well. it ended up causing cancer ~ which she beat..but she died because of the scar tissue.
i pray you have good surgeons .
I see that you one of the reasons you decided to do a breast reduction is because of back pain, but is it not possible to train back pain away?
it probably depends on the person.
Haha, yeah i can see that still being a problem.
no. i tried
Okay, I see.
Forgive me if my questions are rude.
Do you think it will look weird after by that I mean looking down and noticing the difference in size.
Will you find it tricky to walk for a short time after given the weight and gravity and such can provide.
If you have a current partner do they have any thoughts on it?

no, fuck off
I got a breast reduction at the age of 21.
You don’t need to do that I will help you support them
booooooooo
Is your insurance covering this ? If so, how did you get it deemed medically necessary? I went for a consultation one time and was denied and was told to do massage and physical therapy :/
Do other women in your family have the same endowment?
Asking because my mom had a reduction, and I was a B most of my life!
Username checks out
🤣🤣🤣
How did you convince a doctor to do the reduction?
convince?
Some doctors refuse to do certain surgeries [hysterectomy, bisalp, breast reduction and such,] out of fear that they'll be sued for malpractice, or refuse because of misogynistic beliefs that women shouldn't change themselves because their future husband might not like it.
I'm actually surprised if the surgeons decline because of fear of malpractice. my mom had a botched surgery (actually 2 because they tried and failed to fix the first one ) Lawyers told her she actually had a case, but she couldn't find a lawyer who actually WANTED to spend the time and effort on it.
Do breast reduction surgery cause scars? Or any side effects to your body?
congratulations, i pray the surgery goes well for you!
No questions but I’m sure your back thanks you!
A bra that fits also sized me at a 34 :(
Your underbust measurement was 34 inches? I find that incredibly hard to believe at your height and weight.
Male or female?
