As a kid I saw this far more then I should have as for like a one year period we had a busted pay-per-view that let us watch all the movies with no charging or records.
I keep the labels that the pharmacist staples to the outside of the baggie. If I have to put them in something other than the original bottle, I'll stick one of those to the container. Hell, I took one with me when I went to get a pre-employment drug screen just so they wouldn't freak out if I popped positive for uppers.
In hindsight, surprised they actually addressed a real drug. Closest other thing I remember around then was some teen drama (party of 5?) had a girl be “alcoholic” because she had one beer 😒
I was a child when that aired and knew it was drugs. I actually don't even remember it being not drugs. I trust they called it caffeine because of the memes, but the memory is that she was taking speed.
And Family Ties. Alex was taking Mallory’s friends diet pills to cram for a test. Back when doctors would give out amphetamines in little cardboard boxes right in the office for weight loss. They could’ve done a whole episode on the asshole doctor giving a high school girl speed for what was probably 20 lbs or less.
I went to a summer camp around 7-8th grade and a girl took a bunch of caffeine pills and started seizing. It was at a university and the campus store had caffeine pills for sale. Some kids thought it would be fun to take a bunch of them... Not the best way to get sent home from summer camp.
When I was in 8th grade I brought in caffeine pills they were Vivarin's and handed them to some friends...well someone ran straight to the office and ratted me out...Me and my other friend got 4 days of out of school suspension and we missed out on the 6 Flags end of the year class trip
I knew a few people in high school who weren't "bad ass" enough to buy something illegal but still wanted to be "bad ass" so they snorted caffeine pills at lunch sometimes. I never knew how much of it was the pill snorting and how much of it was acting cause he was very "duuuuude I'm so high" about it.
God high school was so fucking weird in retrospect, I knew a few people that "robo buzzed" (intentionally took too much robotussin) frequently in addition to drinking, one of the stoners worked 30 hours a week at mcdonalds and paid most of his grandma's bills and while he was an awful student STILL graduated on time.... Tons of 16 and 17 year olds slept around with men in their 20s and sometimes even 30s (age of consent is 16 here so not technically illegal) and no one really cared as long as they didn't get pregnant even though inevitably some did. There was a early 40s total loser that hung out with 15 - 19 year old boys at the local metal shows and bought them beer all the time. My town at the time was around a quarter old italian catholics and a quarter old irish catholics but they still hated each other for some reason, the rest were either their more moderate working age kids and school aged grandchildren or random transplants filling positions at the few large companies we have; so we had the most random mix of redneck/super religious/random upper-class liberal kids in our high school, and I hung around with the rejects from those three groups and I encountered some interesting people in that time that I can't say I have at any other point in my life.
I went to a Catholic HS in early 2Ks, dumb-ass kids would think they were so sneaky. The "rebellious" boys would get high before school in their cars (you could smell it easily.) The popular but not straight-edge girls would fill a Dasani or whatever bottle with pure vodka. Like a 20 oz. Share it with one or two friends, be stumbling in class or puking in the bathroom.
The smokers didn't participate much in school, dozed a bit, but never caused trouble. The drinkers were either sick, passed out, or loud and giggly. I'm just wondering if their parents didn't care, or they didn't. I mean, 6 oz of vodka (20 oz split among 2 others) is enough to give a grown adult a buzz. But when it was just two of them, I'm surprised none of them ended up in the hospital considering they weighed ~100lbs.
Oh yeah, we did have the chronically on adderall that wasn't their's and coke heads. I just avoided them and was surprised no teachers called them out or noticed.
And that probably did a lot more harm than good. At least, I remember being a teen, when my peers and I were very aware of how much talk about drugs was either exaggerated or a complete lie. Being a kid, seeing this fear-mongering portrayal of caffeine, you're not going to think "I guess caffeine is more dangerous than I thought", but rather "I know caffeine's not that scary. If this is how they portray caffeine, they must push similar lies about hard drugs".
The most surefire way to guarantee that kids are going to ignore your warnings is to sell them a lie that they can see through. If they got an honest portrayal of actual drug addiction, they'd take the message to heart, but not a censored and distorted version.
I remember watching this and watching one of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies where she was eating coffee grounds and Diet Coke to stay awake-- caffeine was treated like the scariest drug we could get our hands on.
I'm going to side with the network here since the target audience was elementary and maybe middle school aged kids. It's not like the writers for Saved By the Bell were composing Shakespeare week to week.
I remember when Adult Swim carried it, which I thought was funny and a good audience, but the fans had a fit over it cause they mostly still saw it as kids stuff rather than ironic and silly kids stuff haha.
They had a bumper during the commercial that was her saying "I'm so excited!" slowed way down and sounded creepy. I think there was a weird color filter on the clip as well.
People joke about caffeine but I had afib a few weeks ago specifically because of it. I take ADHD medication which already increases norepinephrine levels and so does caffeine. Woke up, worked out, heart rate spiked, the next day I developed AFib, and after two days, I had to get my heart chemically converted to a sinus rhythm again because it couldn't do it on its own.
Totally fine now, though, but I was taking close to a gram a day for years and years, finally caught up to me. My heart wasn't damaged (verified with tropinin tests), and my rhythm is great. Decided to drop my ADHD meds dose by half, and swore off caffeine forever and threw away everything with caffeine I had at home.
Be careful with caffeine, especially if you have ADHD medications in tow.
I remember this episode and still tried them as I got older. Maybe I’m sensitive but like 2 of these things had me thinking I was gonna have a heart attack
When monsters first came out they would be 2 for 4$. I would usually buy 2 and drink 1 one day and save the next for the next day. One day I was still thirsty so I cracked the second one and started on it. It gave me cold chills I thought I was gonna barf. Since then I really track how much caffeine I drink
Does anyone else remember when Adult Swim was showing saved by the bell episodes, and the bumpers were freaky as hell slowed/pitched down posterized versions of scenes like this one?
Either one of those would just make me feel like shit now. Super cool how they just started tossing out amphetamines like candy in the 90s and basically gaslit us into thinking they were the healthy amphetamines lol.
Wow, that's fun. It probably contributed to a lot of the trouble I got in throughout school, because it took me a long time to realize it was the meds making me irritable.
I wonder if I still have my “I’m so excited; I’m so scared!” shirt hiding away in the depths of my closet, probably two sizes too small because it was 20 years ago…
This episode actually scared the shit of me when I was a kid, but I always kinda understood it was supposed to be a harder drug. Thank you, NBC, for keeping me away from speed and meth through childhood trauma.
There I was, early 90s watching jesse spano. If you told me that in 2 short years I’d get to see her cooter on a movie screen I wouldn’t have believed it.
I tend to keep my intake under 200mg a day. I have chronic illnesses that cause me to have severe fatigue daily. Caffeine does nothing to keep me awake, but I need to get me through a work day. I can't go on disability, so... 🤷
I completely forgot about this episode until this post. It was so weird. My fiance used to be addicted to Monsters back in the day. He stopped after I told him his heart was beating way too fast for it to he safe. He now drinks one healthier energy drink (max 160mg of caffeine) before work to get him through the day. He's had covid 3 times, and it's taken a toll on his energy. He's always tired.
Not for nothing, but the "diet pills" they used to sell prior to 2000 contained phenylpropanolamine, which was known to lead to psychosis. They would happily sell these to teenagers, and they were legitimately dangerous.
After that was banned in 2000, diet pills switched to ephedra as a replacement... then that got banned too, in 2003.
I worked at a summer camp for teens and one 15 y/o had his mom mail a care package with a case of 5 hour energy. The admin had me give a little talk about caffeine poisoning and kids. I think back then something like 300 kids per year died of caffeine intake in the US. it’s not heroin, but it did shock me a bit.
The producers were worried that her character could be permanently tarnished if it were real drugs in the episode. On an episode of facts of life, one of the girls developed a drinking problem in an episode. She got caught sneaking wine into her bedroom. It made her character really unpopular after that. Probably why they didn't want to risk it on saved by the bell.
It took me all the way up to my 40s to feel the caffeine burning my stomach. Stay drug free kids (jk sort of, the acidity will bother your tummy long before anything else will happen. Oh yeah, and your gallbladder will hurt. Lol)
You know where it leads...
Next thing you know you're flopping around in a pool with the dude from twin peaks, looking like you've been electrocuted.
Hell yea brother, how else am I supposed to react when Dommy Daddy tops me?
Facts. I love this campy shit. Still. I stood in line to see this.
Ms Berkeley has very much embraced Showgirls. You kind of have to.
I love it. It’s so bad it’s good now.
I love it too. It's one of my comfort movies.
As a kid I saw this far more then I should have as for like a one year period we had a busted pay-per-view that let us watch all the movies with no charging or records.
As a teen, I rented it. For, other reasons.
If you're lucky. Some of us end up behind a 7-11 doing favours for a 5 hr energy drink.
First it's caffeine, then you move on to doggie chow.
I used to love Doggy Chow!
It's even worse today, you become an influencer.
Flip it around WICKED WITCH
I once drank a whole pot of coffee before 7am, the had a seizure... I learned my lesson... cut off at 3/4 of a pot ;)
I would've gave anything for Lisa to have made that movie instead.
People joke about Paul Rudd not aging, but I suspect Mario Lopez is the true Dorian Gray.
He's had really obvious work done, his jaw implants are obscene.
Yeah, the zero rape allegations Rudd has against him puts him in a different tier though.
Woah woah woah wait a second. Im out of the loop Mario Lopez has rape allegations?
I did 2 quick google searches. One was "Mario Lopez underage", and the other was "Paul Rudd underage". The results are something else.
Rob Lowe and John Stamos would be more apt.
Maybe Stamos but definitely not Lowe

I’m so. Scared!
Such a great episode haha
Mysterious orange blur.

I recently bought this pill case from Etsy:

I showed it to my sister at Thanksgiving and she immediately started singing "put your MIND to it, GO for it...". Was a fun moment.
All of us can be Friends Forever
I love this so much.
One of the best things about having siblings is pulling out decades-old references from your childhood and they join in like zero time has passed.
I need this for my Ritalin.
FYI, if traveling make sure your Ritalin is in it's original bottle. Schedule II drugs outside their bottles can get you a drug trafficking charge.
I keep the labels that the pharmacist staples to the outside of the baggie. If I have to put them in something other than the original bottle, I'll stick one of those to the container. Hell, I took one with me when I went to get a pre-employment drug screen just so they wouldn't freak out if I popped positive for uppers.
Get down and break a sweat, rock and roll, you ain’t seen nothing yet!
I need this for my caffeine pills. Coffee in the morning, preworkout before workouts, and straight caffeine pills the rest of the day.
I am the person Jessie and crew were scared of her becoming.
I have such a bad memory these days but I can sure remember every single word of that Hot Sundae song.
Fun fact about me: when The Internet first became a household thing and little tween me was dabbling in chat rooms, my handle was Hot Sundae 😂
Rock and roll, you ain’t seen nothin yet.
oh that's amazing.
I believe that it was supposed to be speed, but the network changed it to caffeine
started as coke
went to speed
went to caffeine
now I remember the fresh prince episode where Carlton couldn't stop dancing. was that speed too?
That actually was speed. I remember that episode.
In hindsight, surprised they actually addressed a real drug. Closest other thing I remember around then was some teen drama (party of 5?) had a girl be “alcoholic” because she had one beer 😒
Wait, what? There was an episode of fresh prince where Carlton did drugs?!
Either I never saw it or completely forgot about it.
One of the earlier seasons. Someone gave Will speed, but Carlton thought they were vitamins and took a bunch
There was also an episode where Carlton bought a gun
Yea after being mugged at the atm
I appreciate a black man exercising his constitutional right. Weird lesson for an after school show.
https://youtu.be/zqZFzzp0IR8?si=MS5u3juj-VBIO_Ru
It had an emotional ending
You can watch the remake Bel Air and watch Carlton use constantly!
There was an episode of Step by Step which dealt with the consequences of drinking and driving
90210 did alcoholism, gambling addiction, smoking cigarettes, diet pills, cocaine, speed, ecstasy, bulimia and pot.
That was just the after party.
It was a very intense episode.
90210 had David drop acid in that one episode.
It was the dancing plague. Fortunately he didn't die from it.
No way a teenage after school show had coke as the drug of choice. Pepsi maybe.
Nah crystal pepsi for the bougie
Crystal Methsi
These were supposed to be the rich kids, so yeah... I could see one of them developing itchy gums.
It was the choice of a new generation, afterall.
All I wanted was a Pepsi. And she wouldn’t give it to me
We’ve decided it would be in your best interest if we put you somewhere you can get the help that you need
Just like my Friday night /s
They could have just called them “diet pills” since those were, in fact, amphetamine, but younger kids wouldn’t know that.
Um, as the 92 pound kid in high school who was looking for diet pills ...
At the time we still knew what they meant.
I was a child when that aired and knew it was drugs. I actually don't even remember it being not drugs. I trust they called it caffeine because of the memes, but the memory is that she was taking speed.
I remember it being speed
That was Fresh Prince
And Family Ties. Alex was taking Mallory’s friends diet pills to cram for a test. Back when doctors would give out amphetamines in little cardboard boxes right in the office for weight loss. They could’ve done a whole episode on the asshole doctor giving a high school girl speed for what was probably 20 lbs or less.
That makes more sense. Even in the 90's if it was just "caffeine" they wouldn't have freaked out like this.
So basically Ritalin and adderal
Just drugs in general. The episode was a PSA for kids on a family friendly network that was just there to say “Drugs are bad. Get some help.”
[deleted]
I still got that point as a kid.
Scared tf out of me, and made me cry as a preteen at how good of a friend Zack was when he needed to be.
Now as an adult, Zack Morris is the Worst!
I went to a summer camp around 7-8th grade and a girl took a bunch of caffeine pills and started seizing. It was at a university and the campus store had caffeine pills for sale. Some kids thought it would be fun to take a bunch of them... Not the best way to get sent home from summer camp.

I remember when caffeinated water was a thing. Crank2O was fun. Knew people who used it to brew coffee….
We had this and jolt cola but the second a caffeine pill came out of someone's bag, everyone thought it was the end of society
https://i.redd.it/ztkclrtby87g1.gif
I love how even Stewie has great hair here lol
This is the only reason I even know about that scene.
I remember being genuinely afraid of caffeine pills after this episode.
And then the faculty came out a few years later and you just knew caffeine was deadly ☠️
To be fair caffeine was only one of the ingredients. The rest was probably a mix of baking soda and angel dust.
Five bucks a pop.
I knew a few people in high school who weren't "bad ass" enough to buy something illegal but still wanted to be "bad ass" so they snorted caffeine pills at lunch sometimes. Reminds me of a group of us drinking too much BAWLS in my friend's basement the first time.
Even with alcohol, so much of the behavior is what we are socially conditioned to expect.
I went to a Catholic HS in early 2Ks, dumb-ass kids would think they were so sneaky. The "rebellious" boys would get high before school in their cars (you could smell it easily.) HOLY SHIT is this why my mom keeps concern-checking me for buying caffeine pills???
are you so excited though? Are you excited?
Please post on r/decaf
Done.
The episode made it seem like she was hard drug addict. It was Amazing.
Initially it was written as her taking speed, but the network wasn’t ok with it. So it was changed to caffeine pills.
There is an entire South Park episode about this. Future Self and Me
I remember watching this and watching one of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies where she was eating coffee grounds and Diet Coke to stay awake-- caffeine was treated like the scariest drug we could get our hands on.
I'm going to side with the network here since the target audience was elementary and maybe middle school aged kids. It's not like the writers for Saved By the Bell were composing Shakespeare week to week.

Way to ruin our trip down memory lane
Friends........forever !!!!!!
meanwhile me after I just drank a Celsius ->😐
Yeah, thats just baseline
I miss the world that was simple enough for this to be a major concern
This came out when cocaine was rampant in society.
Oh yeah. Same.
"Talk to kids about... caffeine."
"You, all right? I learned it by watching you!"
Be careful with caffeine, especially if you have ADHD medications in tow.
you guys remember those bumps of caffeine ads they had floating around last year?
But I get so excited for the pure uncut that smells and feels amazing to my nose.
Me, hopped up on caffeine: IM SO EXCITED (for another coffee)
I remember this episode and still tried them as I got older. Maybe I’m sensitive but like 2 of these things had me thinking I was gonna have a heart attack
I recall one no doze had me vibrating lol. 2 would have made my head explode
I was using them when I was boozing so maybe that was part of it
My breakfast every morning of my senior year in the late 00’s was a BFC can of Monster Energy.
Pretty sure all caffeine pills are the same dose and 2 is a loooot of caffeine. That will definitely make you feel not good.
Maybe it was less but whatever I took I threw that shit out the next day. Turns out Zack Morris was right
Jessie, these pills are dangerous.
Does anyone else remember when Adult Swim was showing saved by the bell episodes, and the bumpers were freaky as hell slowed/pitched down posterized versions of scenes like this one?
Edit: forgot to post the link https://youtu.be/FNJXfsGKfjA Pleasant nightmares
Bout to crack my 3rd 12oz redbull of the day lol im so excited
THERE'S NEVER ANY TIME!!!
Showgirls baby!!
Isn't he the one that suggested the pills to her?
Yes, Zack Morris is trash.
Im a Maniac, Maniac....
I’m so excited
I have ADHD and I made the mistake of taking my Adderall and downing it with a full can of monster that was not a fun experience.
Either one of those would just make me feel like shit now. Super cool how they just started tossing out amphetamines like candy in the 90s and basically gaslit us into thinking they were the healthy amphetamines lol.
Oh yeah I had to get off my adderall because it caused my blood pressure to be sky high as an adult. I last took it in 2019.
Wow, that's fun. It probably contributed to a lot of the trouble I got in throughout school, because it took me a long time to realize it was the meds making me irritable.
I remember watching and being like, my mom drinks 8 cups of coffee a day, and she doesn’t act like this. Wtf is in those pills? 😂
They only changed it to caffeine because the network didn't want to mention real drugs, but the episode was 100% about methamphetamines
There I was, early 90s watching jesse spano. If you told me that in 2 short years I’d get to see her cooter on a movie screen I wouldn’t have believed it.
Gems like these keep me coming back. 🥲
Just say no.
I NEED TO DANCE. I can’t help it Zack (who is Zack?) BUT WATCH THIS. /step:step step see that?
I'm pretty sure I drink caffeine more than her "OD" before Noon, and that's on a light day...
The Great Cornholio says you have nothing to lose but your bunghole!
This episode never failed to make me tear up, and I can’t hear that song without instantly thinking of this scene!
Wasn’t it originally supposed to be drugs?
I’m 41, if I hear anyone is taking caffeine pills this is all I think about. I will then drink a Red Bull.
im so sxcited! im so excited!
I had no idea caffeine was this dangerous. *cracks a Pepsi.*
I never knew it changed to caffeine! When did that happen???
I tend to keep my intake under 200mg a day. I have chronic illnesses that cause me to have severe fatigue daily. Caffeine does nothing to keep me awake, but I need to get me through a work day. I can't go on disability, so... 🤷

Did Zack push her to take the pills because she was tired from school and singing?
In retrospect he must have had ulterior motives to show that much compassion.
This episode aired November 3, 1990. So this meme was probably posted 2 years, one month, and almost a couple of weeks ago.
Not for nothing, but the "diet pills" they used to sell prior to 2000 contained phenylpropanolamine, which was known to lead to psychosis. They would happily sell these to teenagers, and they were legitimately dangerous.

Chugs Mountain Dew to down an Addie.

VER-SAYS-CE
I drank 3 mountain dew today. I'll never quit!

Miles Fisher New Romance
They parody this episode in this music video
...and she kept that energy all the way through Showgirls!
It took me all the way up to my 40s to feel the caffeine burning my stomach. Stay drug free kids (jk sort of, the acidity will bother your tummy long before anything else will happen. Oh yeah, and your gallbladder will hurt. Lol)
33?! Wow what a unique milestone
I remember watching this episode. If someone came to my house my mom would say. So n so is here
A scene I will never forget
Caffeine can lead to bad choices
Never Forget
33 years? For those who come after
Wasn’t supposed to be some form of Dexatrim? aka Meth…and yep
It was supposed to be speed.
But she was so excited.
I'm so excited
I miss the Zack Attack… Friends Forever
Aired in early November actually. And 1990
