Ran across this and wanted to share it. Just another sneaky way that money is stolen from the economies of women.

Interesting! Social scientists love these kinds of natural experiments. The most famous one (as far as I know) was done by submitting identical resumes to fast food restaurants with “white-sounding” and “black-sounding” names. Not surprisingly, the black-sounding names got fewer callbacks.
Another experiment found that more women were hired from blind orchestral auditions compared to non-blind (they either auditioned from behind a screen or in direct sight).
Countless experiments across a variety of scenarios have been conducted with similar results. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if bias was present here too.
I remember the orchestra one, because they had to fix the screen part.
They put the auditioners behind the screen but less women were still selected because the judges could tell that some were women by the sound of their heels.
They had to put carpet down in order to do a truly blind screen test.
The blind orchestra experiment is definitely one of my favorites to hear about. It sounds so much like, DUH, but we needed a study to show it apparently!
Same in research science. Peer reviews of research are not blind despite several experiments showing that the acceptance rate of publications goes up for women and down for men when names are removed.
This doesn't surprise me at all. I've heard it conjectured that some of the larger disparities in male and female adult heights can be attributed to serving girls smaller portions.
I'd be interested in testing men's vs women's drive through orders on things where the portions can vary more, or on sandwich orders.
New chipotle hack, I guess my name is now John if I ever go back there. The quality has diminished so much it's less likely.
Yes, though it has mostly to do with starvation. The husband/fathers gets served first, then the sons are allowed to eat, and only after they are done, women geht the scraps - if there are some. Starved children have stunted growths.
It's the usual patriarchic bullshit of men greedily gobbling up way more than they deserve and as usual women have to pay the price for men's misdeeds.
Yep I'm the youngest in a large blue collar family and when I was a baby I apparently would only eat food off my dad's plate, not off my own or my mom's. If everything was equal this would have been just a cute baby quirk, but instead family legend has it that this was why I was such a fat baby, because my dad got the best of everything and I was eating the prime food. In fact my uncle used to say 'this one is smart, she knows where the best food is' like my ENTIRE family took it for granted that the man's plate contained not just the largest portions but a better quality of food than the women and children's. (And I was gaming the system by not knowing my place in the food chain, which is the only part of this I kind of appreciate.)
I can’t remember where I read it but it might have been in Before War by Elisha Daeva. In a nutshell the book talks about how patriarchy became widespread worldwide around 10,000 years ago and prior to that there were more equal or matriarchal societies around the world. They found that a lot of the female and male skeletons in I think Mesopotamia were almost the same height and size.
There’s a reason why Ozempic and heroin chic are in now that the far right is becoming more powerful worldwide thanks to Trump. Being skinny isn’t all about beauty. Ultimately, authoritarians benefit from women being physically and mentally weak due to starvation.
In college I had an amazing anthropology professor who had us talk about sexual dimorphism using metrics other than height, weight and muscle mass (muscle mass matters most in male/male aggression, which allegedly is not a factor in human mating since women allegedly are free to choose mates rather than a single male fighting for mating rights). And it was really hard to find scientific papers in anthropology journals that characterized male/female body differences in any other way. Instead they overemphasized hunting, combat, and dominance as 'survival traits' while not considering things like disease resistance, problem solving, provisioning and intelligence.
So what's the difference in our immune system, sense of smell, eyesight, cognitive abilities, impulsivity, etc? Even once we started sequencing genomes and finding entire families, communities and their fossilized garbage piles - all things we commonly use to infer social hierarchies and caregiving and even some really subtle emotional connections, we still talked about evolution as if it only allowed Chad to survive and mate. Anthropology has been driven by men so long we're used to learning about it only in terms that men have considered important (mainly height and soft tissue mass, alas they cannot infer fossilized dick size). When obviously evolution puts far stronger pressure on other metrics.
And even the argument that evolution only operates on reproductive populations therefore sexual selection in both directions matters brings us back to 'women want 6' tall chads with big dicks and gym muscles' even in anthropology research. What about phenotypes that allow us to survive long enough to mate, survive childbirth, pick a 'good mate' so they don't kill us or give our kids their shitty genetics, feed our families year round, avoid dying through generational wisdom?
Like fruit fly females don't mate with males that smell like diseased sperm. Why are we not using this as a metric in modern human evolution? Lol
I'm willing to bet they charge us the same though, despite giving us less food.
Indeed they do!
When I ask for the same serving size they give the male customer they served just right before me, it costs me extra, but it didn’t cost him extra.
I thought this was universally known already? When I’m lined up at Chipotle behind a man, they serve me 1/2 - 2/3 the meat they’ve served the man in front of me. When I’ve asked to get the same serving size he had, they tell me that costs extra.
It’s pretty blatant. Others haven’t seen that?
Is it usually men or women doing the serving?
I haven’t noticed a difference between male and female servers when it comes to giving me less meat.
I can tell the anti-work/anti-establishment types though because they’ll intentionally mislabel what I ordered to something cheaper on the menu, or intentionally not ring up the guacamole.
Even if I'm wanting smaller portions, I sure demand smaller costs for that! I'm in my 60's, and have no problem picketing in front of a restaurant. I did this to JC Penney when I had to pay for a suit to be hemmed and the man picking up HIS altered suit had been done free of charge. Got on local AND national news for it, then Penney's had to change their misogynist policy.
You’re an inspiration!!
Well, thank you!!
Unfair crap. That's my thoughts.
I’ve experienced this first hand a number of years ago. I was out to eat with a close male friend of mine one evening and we both ordered the same taco plate at a restaurant. When our food was brought to us I immediately noticed I only had 2 tacos, when my plate was supposed to come with 3, just like my friend’s plate had come. When I asked the waiter why I was only served 2 tacos, he said he thought I ordered from the lunch menu. It was 8pm.
When I worked in fast food/casual dining the only person in the kitchen who could see the name/sex on the ticket was the counter, everyone else just heard the order call. Most drive-thru restaurants have pretty standard portion measures for consistency/price efficiency.
A sample size of two is not that compelling, and influencers in general are trying to sell you something.
Barring home cooking and sexist employees going out of their ways to be dongers, I can imagine that this is hit or miss by establishment.
All the more reason to patronize honest, women owned and operated. If a place is shorting you consistently, that’s malpractice; don’t give them your business.
When I first read your comment I was expecting there to be typical Reddit downvotes on anything that contradicts the post/party line. It was so refreshing to find this with a suitable number of upvotes! I love this subreddit so much, nuance and critical thinking queens ❤️
If you're ordering anything to be delivered it's always better to use a man's name.
For personal safety reasons as well
Grrrrrrrr
Can confirm, when i changed my name on ubereats from feminine to "Big John", not only did my portion sizes increase from the resturants, but drivers could suddenly find my door and leave the food, instead of always saying they were lost and needing me to come outside to them. Nobody wants to do a meet and greet with big john haha.
Omg, this is such a good idea! Hope you don't mind if I steal that name lol
It’s sneaky and robbery.
