First off, hats off to everyone on the grind here. I really appreciate this community and how people are there for each other through a really stressful process. I’ve been a long-time lurker and wanted to share something that grew from having faced my own share of career difficulties.

I’ve personally been burned by the corporate world a few times and had a rather strange path. From working in banking for 5 years to graduate school in philosophy. Seeing my own career journey and other similar struggles from my friends and those here, made me realize that something that's desperately needed is clear, reliable career information.

This led me to decide to build a tool and wanted to share it in case it's helpful to anyone. It's based on real data and shows you genuine career possibilities tailored to you in terms of skills, interests, and values, so not just salary. It's especially for people rethinking what they want in a career or trying to pivot, and meant to help with making more informed decisions before spending hundreds of hours on job applications without realizing what other (and potentially better) options exist.

Caveat: it's still a work in progress. Right now I'm mostly trying to validate the idea first and see if people actually find this helpful. Super appreciate any honest feedback.

If this is something you'd find useful, feel free to check it out: findyour.stream

And if you feel like sharing, what's been the most difficult part for you in the job search or in deciding on a career path?

Thanks for reading, and good luck to everyone on the grind! 💙

  • Hey! I tried your website and it didn't quite work for me. I know it's a work in progress, but the results I got seem kind of bonkers.

When I chose my current profession, there were a few suggestions that seemed pretty much identical. I chose "Cook (Culinary)" for profession.

Here's the progression Stream suggested if I stay in my current profession:

Cook (culinary) --2.7yrs--> Line Cook (culinary) --2.7yrs--> Culinary [that's the full job title] --2.9yrs--> Private Chef

Stream also provided two "alternative" career paths. One path was all the same job titles, but in a different order (still ending as a private chef in 8-9 years). The other suggested that I take 2.7 years to become a cashier at a grocery store.

I could go on a long rant about everything wrong with the quiz and results, but I don't want to beat a dead horse. I will mention that all the job titles in the first two progressions were literally the same job with similar-but-different AI generated descriptions. I'll add that the career progression, from timeline to job titles, had almost nothing in common with how careers typically develop in this profession.

You say you built this website, but it feels like you asked an AI to build it for you and neglected to check what it produced. This felt very poorly put together to me. You have a great idea, and I hope one day a platform like this actually exists.

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah the first engine we built gives some crazy results. I'm aware of the weird naming conventions and logic. That's being fixed in the engine we're working on now, which has a lot more work put into job classifications, better data cleanup, and detailed logic between roles and to provide alternate paths. I appreciate the sentiment though, there's a lot that needs to be worked through to get there, and it's happening.
