Ok now I wonder if Turks feel more connected to Central Asian Turks or to ancient Anatolians?

    parent
    20 points Half-BloodPrince_

Its more about whether you identify with the islamic civilization and the ottomans more,or with central asian turks more.

We learn about ancient anatolians at school, and ancient anatolian imagery is still used for example,Hitite Sun Disk was used as the symbol of the capital for some time,we have monuments of this symbol and a big shot chocolate company,Eti,uses the Disk as its symbol. And Atatürk proclaimed defeating the greeks was revenge for Troy.

Its really nothing more than imagery though, not many identifies with ancient anatolians

    parent root
    11 points 4KT76

The name Eti itself is a synonym in Turkish for hittite as well

    parent root
    15 points dcdemirarslan

That entirely depends on your own traditions in family. It's all inseparably mixed anyway so you will get some that and some of this.

    parent root
    6 points No-Care6414

My family are Bulgarian turks that became refugees in turkey after cultural genocide under communist regime

And I feel closer to balkans than to anatolia or central asia

    parent root
    8 points huutaamee

Ofc we are more connected to the Central Asian Turks, anyone who claims otherwise is talking bs. Yes, we underwent an ethnogenesis with the Anatolian natives, but the Turks were the winners of this ethnogenesis, which is why our language is still Turkic. Yes, we definitely have some ties to the ancient Anatolians as well, but when we arrived, the Anatolian natives were already assimilated people.

    parent root
    1 points decentshitposter

the word Anatolia is used to refer to the country as much as the countrys name itself here, there is definitely an awareness of Anatolian Culture and traditions because we embraced some, but most people are spiritually connected to central asia or wherever they came from before settling into Anatolia

    parent root
    1 points Half-BloodPrince_

Oh and forgot to mention this but,Atatürk also promoted some crackpot, pseudo scientific theory called the Sun Language theory, that claimed Sumerians were in fact turkic, and that all languages were developed after sumerian, thus all languages came from turkish

    parent root
    -1 points buzruleti

why not both 😏 theres no reason for me to prefer one over the other. i feel connected to the central asian turks because we share a beautiful language and traditions and i feel connected to my native ancestors because i carry their blood and traditions.

There really needs to be a better name for anotolian turks. There’s like 50 of them and Turks calling themselves Turks is the laziest so far

    parent
  • 11 points panturanicsinobharat

Turkey Turks are 80% not Turkic ethnically. Turkish is a nationality which is often confused with an ethnicity. This is exacerbated by the fact that the ottomans weren't particularly discriminating in who they referred to as "turk" as the ottomans simply used the word to refer to either nomadic peoples within the realm OR turkish speaking peasants. In other words even if a family has been "turk" since ottoman times it doesn't mean in any sense that they are of Turkic descent. It simply means that they were anatolian peasants or nomads and their first language was turkish

Being Turkic is not solely determined by dna so Turks are still fully Turkic ethnically since Turkic is an ethnolinguistic group, being Turkic is determined by your native language, culture and lineage, Turkic tribes in central asia and siberia are also mixed with persian, mongol and slavic, that doesnt make them ethnically less Turkic since there is no “Turkic” gene, its called central asian/siberian dna, same how there is no “arab” gene either since its also an ethnolinguistic group,

    parent root
    2 points huutaamee

All nations undergo ethnogenesis, if the Turkish language and culture are preserved as a result of this ethnogenesis, then of course we are Turks. I'm tired of the genetics issue being discussed only in relation to Turkish people, all the modern nations are mixed. We can still fully understand a Turkish poem written in the 13th century, do we need to still ride horses to be considered Turkic? And there is no difference between Turkic and Turkish in Turkish. We just use one word "Türk". If the native anatolians have been talking turkish over centuries they are turks already. Just look up ethnogenesis man, stop talking bs.
