I was listening to uprising by muse and was wondering if there was anyway the proles could have turned to music to marshal a revolt. Ive only read 1984 once so my memory might not be the best but was art in any way popular among the proles? Or could it have been made popular in any way? At least they weren't under constant surveillance like the outer party.

  • The music they like was produced by the party. In fact, creativity is shunned in Oceana, so the music was composed not by a human, but by a machine. I imagine the Thought Police would discourage music composed by proles.

Thought police is an pervasive presence there i agree. I dont remember the proles being watched in the book though. But the fact that even Winston and Julia's meeting place was under surveillance makes me think otherwise

The proles were not heavily surveiled, but the thought police did observe them, identifying intelligent proles who might agitate others.

  • Orwell doesn’t give us the full picture, but I would say that what he does show us, implies that the proles are the only hope. We don’t truly know how well the party has a handle on the proles. Do they just get to look for country butter or have they started an entire black market away from the party?

  • I don't think any Prole knows how to sing besides parroting party slogans.

The thought may not have occurred to them to try.

  • Muse + 1984?
The Resistance (album) aside, you should definitely listen to the Audible 1984 Audio Drama that came out last year. Absolutely superb cast, but the music… 👀👀

Yes, sorry, it’s Amazon 😫 but I’m sure you could find it somewhere else- if you know what I mean?
