The unfathomable depths of despair that every half-life fan has been feeling for 30 years pales in comparison to the suffering of being forced to watch the world revel in it.
at this point i'd honestly accept "we are never doing hl3. stop asking" like just give us some sort of closure instead of leaving it up in the air like this
We know some version of HL3 (currently internally named HLX) is in the works and has been for years. In addition to random insiders and rumors, they've been doing tons of work on Source 2 and a lot of that ends up in Deadlock and Counter-Strike 2, the code and files are riddled with mentions of HLX and new engine/graphics/AI/physics features that only make sense for a new FPS. (Tyler McVicker and GabeFollower have done a ton of datamining and reporting on it) There was a lot of buzz from multiple people who are knowledgeable about the situation that Valve would reveal the game basically any day now since last month, after the Steam Machine/Controller/etc announcements, so a shitload of people thought it would be at the Game Awards.
Personally I didn't expect it there at all, Valve doesn't need TGA, a new Half-Life announcement would break the internet on it's own whenever they do it, they don't need to pay 6 or 7 digits to Geoff to release a trailer that's going to blow up instantly. A couple of the insiders said that pretty much as well. The current estimate is "sometime before next year" and/or "January."
Thanks for the answer! I do hope it happens, but that part about the Source 2 code seems biased to me. It's like the people who believe in something like bigfoot. They say any couple of pixels in a crappy video is bigfoot because they want it to be real. It's crazy how well Valve keeps information from outsiders, but it also drives me crazy that they can't bring themselves to confirm or deny anything.
A couple things:
1. Look up the ending to Half-Life Alyx if you haven't played it. Spoilers: The ending is retconning the end of Episode 2, including new models of Gordon and Dr. Vance, changing it so Alyx gets taken by the Combine while Eli survives. Eli even hands you a crowbar and says you have work to go do! Why would they make a brand new game, and then bother retconning the old cliffhanger if they weren't working on a payoff? They could have left it completely alone and left Alyx as a prequel unconnected to Episode 2, but they very specifically didn't.
2. The HLX stuff isn't conspiracy make-believe. It's literal code and assets in their games and engine. Like, just in the last year or two there's been new physics systems, direct mentions of Antlions and other HL entities, dynamic weather and liquid physics, thermodynamic simulation systems, AI and NPC reactions/behaviors, even mentions of the HEV suit and crowbar, the kind of stuff that would be in a classic Valve FPS trying to push tech forward, and not a MOBA or an esport like Counter-Strike. Hell, even 9 years ago there was a "crowbar zipline" system added to Source 2 for a canceled version of HL3 that got left in Aperture Robot Repair, a VR demo, and early 3D models of the Steam Controller 2 and Steam Frame/Frame controllers were left in Dota 2 updates. They do this a lot!
3. HLX isn't the first time they've been working on this. There's been multiple known attempts at Half-Life 3, including the one I mentioned earlier that got reworked into HL Alys. Based on the data they've been leaving in their games, and talking to employees/insiders, the current one has been in the works since 2019 and hasn't been abandoned. If it wasn't real, or was canceled, they wouldn't still be putting HLX features into Source 2 releases.

…no, I don’t think they are
Trying to summon hl3 from the depths of hell
Summoning works. The Ace Combat subReddit has proved it.
Ace Combat 8 comes 2026!!!!!
Mobius 1 standing by for peak fiction!!! RAAAHHHH!!!
Yeah the cost was manifesting an uncomfortable amount of Ace Combat plot points into reality.
But we didn't go full Belka yet, so that's good.
Let's go buddies!!!
<<this is what those demonic rituals is for>>

We just want a conclusion Gabe...
Just end our suffering. I beg of you.

Even if they genuinely had no plans for hl3, they'd never announce that. It's one hell of a golden goose that they'd be killing
Conversely, if they did announce that, a considerable amount of people would not believe them
It's not a golden goose when they aren't selling its products
But they could someday, and it has enough hype to profit no matter what
based pfp
these things, they take time
After all that edging and teasing from Geoff?
No
I wonder how the Titanfall fans are taking it

Oh...
They got baited harder in show, the big announcement slot started "from the creators of Apex Legends..."
Was there any actual source (no pun intended) for HL3 at the Game Awards? Because, to me, it all seemed like some kind of mass hallucination.

Insider stuff about them working on some 'hlx' has been going around around for a while and they've just announced the game cube
thiis next half-life seems very, very interesting.
...what do you two think?
Guess the very next fuckin post I got below this one
R/ACE COMBAT DID IT AND IT FUCKING WORKED
We are not
Leakers currently say it's still 2025, so we got like 3ish more weeks before hopium dies out
Valve usually goes on vacation for the rest of December starting today, the 12th, tho
shruuu[ i gotta inject more hopium in my veinsss
The Titanfall 2 subreddit is probably having a worse breakdown after the last announcement

Call me crazy but I don't think we're getting Half Life 3...
Hopium overdose 😭
what having no new content does to a mofo. I feel it though. I'm watching the sly cooper subreddit slowly turn that way.
It worked for ace combat fans !
